If a Bluetooth device shows as connected but sound still comes from your Samsung Galaxy phone, check the device’s separate Calls and Audio settings, then choose it in the Quick panel’s Media output control. Bluetooth can be connected without being selected or enabled for the kind of sound you’re playing.
First, identify what is playing through the phone
Galaxy separates Bluetooth call routing from Bluetooth media routing. A call playing through the phone points to the device’s Calls switch; music, video, or other app audio points to Audio and the selected media output. If calls work but music does not, focus on media settings rather than assuming the Bluetooth connection has failed.
Samsung’s Bluetooth pairing guide likewise distinguishes the audio settings needed for calls from other connection settings.
Turn on the appropriate Bluetooth output
- Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Tap the settings icon beside the connected headphones or earbuds.
- Turn on Calls for phone calls, or Audio for music and other media. Enable both if you want both kinds of sound through the device.
Samsung notes that calls or audio will not play through connected headphones when the corresponding output setting is off. The precise labels or location can vary by Galaxy model and software version. See Samsung’s Bluetooth headphone troubleshooting guide.

Select the Bluetooth device as the media output
Even with Bluetooth Audio enabled, media may be routed to the phone or another connected device. Open the Quick panel, tap Media output, and select the headphones or speaker you want. Samsung describes this control as a way to switch media between the phone and a listed connected device; when multiple Bluetooth devices are connected, it may also offer simultaneous media playback. Details are in Samsung Canada’s guide to controlling media and devices.
Check whether only one app is affected
If other apps play through Bluetooth but one app continues through the phone, check Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound. This setting can send a selected app’s media to a different device from the phone’s main output. Samsung says the Bluetooth option appears when a Bluetooth device is connected; see its advanced audio settings guide.

If the connected device is a car stereo
Some vehicle systems support Bluetooth calls but not Bluetooth media. In the car’s Bluetooth settings, enable Media audio if the option is available. If it is missing, check the stereo or vehicle manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer: the car may not support media playback over Bluetooth. Samsung explains this limitation in its car stereo media audio troubleshooting guide.
Android Auto can introduce a separate routing issue: Samsung documents a case where media is directed to the car and call routing can depend on the last-connected device. Treat this as relevant when Android Auto and a car are involved, not as a general explanation for headphones. See Samsung’s Android Auto call-routing guidance.

Isolate a device or general sound problem
- Disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices and try again, in case sound is going to a different accessory.
- Keep Bluetooth headphones within 30 feet while troubleshooting. Samsung gives this as a guideline, not a guaranteed range; the usable distance varies with the environment and headphone model.
- Check that the phone and accessory are not muted and that their volume is turned up. Samsung also recommends temporarily disabling Bluetooth and restarting the phone as general sound checks. Its speaker troubleshooting guide covers phone sound checks.
- If the headphones appear damaged, they may need repair or replacement. For persistent problems, contact Samsung Support or the accessory or vehicle manufacturer.
