First, check that your washer’s exact model supports Wi-Fi and SmartThings: not every Samsung washer does. For a compatible model, install or update the SmartThings app, sign in with a Samsung account, then add the washer in the app and follow its prompts to connect it to your home Wi-Fi. Samsung’s washer connection guidance specifies a 2.4 GHz network.
Check whether your Samsung washer supports SmartThings
Wi-Fi and SmartThings support depend on the washer model. Check the model number on the appliance label, then look up that exact model in its user manual or on Samsung’s support site. A Smart Control or Smart Monitor control, or a Wi-Fi indicator, may signal connected features, but confirm the model’s documentation rather than relying on a control-panel label alone. Samsung’s Smart Care guide also explains that Smart Care is a code-reading diagnostic feature, not Wi-Fi connectivity.

What you need before setup
- A compatible Samsung washer, powered on and plugged in.
- A phone or tablet with the SmartThings app installed and updated.
- A Samsung account, plus access to your home Wi-Fi name and password.
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, as specified in Samsung’s washer connection and Wi-Fi instructions.
Samsung lists a Samsung account, wireless network, and SmartThings app among the requirements for the connected features it describes. Available app menus and setup choices can vary by app and software version.
Add the washer in SmartThings
- Open SmartThings and sign in. Create a Samsung account if you do not already have one.
- Start adding a device. In the app, open Devices and choose Add (the exact labels may vary). Scan the washer’s product QR code if one is available, search for or select the washer model, or use nearby-device discovery if the app offers it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Choose a location or room if prompted, then select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Keep the washer powered on while setup runs.
- Wait for confirmation. The app will indicate when the washer has been added. Use the app’s prompts if it asks you to complete a step on the washer itself.
Samsung describes these app-based setup routes in its SmartThings connection guide. The routes are alternatives for discovery; they do not make an otherwise incompatible washer compatible.

If the washer will not connect
Work through the checks below in order. Samsung’s appliance connection troubleshooting guide recommends checking app, account, network, and model-specific requirements.
- Update SmartThings. Close and reopen the app after installing any available update, then try adding the washer again.
- Verify the Wi-Fi password. Re-enter it carefully and confirm that you selected your home network, not a neighboring or guest network.
- Check the network band and model instructions. Samsung’s washer guidance specifies 2.4 GHz. Consult the exact model’s manual for any additional network requirements.
- Improve signal at the washer. Try setup near the router if practical. Samsung recommends a stronger signal or moving the router closer when the washer cannot connect; a signal extender may also help if coverage is weak.
- Reduce network load or restart equipment. If many devices are using the network, pause unnecessary traffic. When appropriate, power-cycle the router and washer, then retry setup.
- Check the Wi-Fi name only in the relevant update workflow. Samsung’s update instructions say the network name should contain only letters and numbers for that documented workflow. This is not stated as a universal SmartThings rule.
If SmartThings says the washer is already registered
The washer may already belong to another Samsung account. If someone in your household set it up, ask them to share access or send an invitation. If the washer changed owners, follow the ownership or transfer route that matches your situation in Samsung’s SmartThings connection troubleshooting guide.
If pairing still fails
If the washer detects networks but registration in SmartThings fails, use the app’s reporting or diagnostic option where available. If the washer’s network function itself appears faulty, or the problem continues after the basic checks, contact Samsung or your router provider as appropriate. Samsung provides repair scheduling and a service locator through its washer support information.

On supported models, SmartThings can show washer status, allow cycle scheduling or starting, send cycle-finished alerts, and provide troubleshooting or status notifications. The available functions depend on the model and settings; a successful connection does not mean every SmartThings feature is available on every washer. Samsung describes its connected washer features in its SmartThings guide and remote monitoring instructions.
