To improve Wi-Fi on a desktop PC, first confirm it has a wireless adapter that supports your router’s Wi-Fi band. Then improve router and PC placement, test another band, and compare the connection with another device. These checks help distinguish weak coverage from a desktop adapter or configuration problem before you buy anything.

1. Check that your desktop can connect to the network

A desktop PC needs a wireless network adapter to connect to Wi-Fi, and the adapter must support the band you want to use. Some adapters support only certain frequency bands. If the network does not appear on the PC, band compatibility is one possible cause—not proof that the signal is too weak. See Microsoft’s guidance on setting up a wireless network in Windows and its Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

If other devices can see the network but the desktop cannot, check the PC adapter’s supported bands and configuration before replacing hardware. An adapter may be built into the PC or added separately; any replacement needs to fit the desktop and support the bands you intend to use.

2. Improve router and PC placement

Try moving the router before spending money on an upgrade. Microsoft recommends positioning it near the center of the home, elevated off the floor, and away from walls and metal objects. Avoid hiding it in a corner or under a desk. Reducing the number of walls and other obstacles between the router and PC can help the PC receive the signal. Small changes in router or antenna orientation may also affect reception. See Microsoft’s wireless-network setup guidance and its advice on Wi-Fi and home layout.

If you cannot move the router, try moving the desktop or its Wi-Fi adapter to a less obstructed position. For a desktop with an external USB adapter, a different position for the adapter may help it avoid being blocked by the PC case or nearby furniture. Judge changes by testing the connection from the PC’s usual working location, not just beside the router.

3. Test the Wi-Fi band that suits the distance

When your router offers more than one band, test each one from the desktop’s normal location. The best choice depends on the distance, obstructions, and what both the router and PC support.

  • Compatibility Systems: This Wi-Fi usb adapter is compatible with Windows11/10/8.1/8/7/XP,not supports Mac OS or Chromebook or Linux. Most Windows 11/10 systems will automatically detect and install the drivers. If the system does not detect the driver, you will need to download it from our website. For Windows 7, you will need to manually install the driver for this wifi card.or you go to the website online-setup support,we do online-setup for you.
Band Typical advantage Trade-off Compatibility
2.4 GHz Longer range and better obstacle penetration Generally slower throughput and more congestion The adapter and router must support the band
5 GHz Generally faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels Shorter range and poorer obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz The adapter and router must support the band
6 GHz Can work well close to the access point Shorter range and weaker wall penetration Requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment and drivers

These are general band trade-offs, not a guarantee of a particular speed or signal level in your home. Microsoft explains the differences in Wi-Fi and your home layout. If the PC is far from the router or separated by walls, 2.4 GHz may be more dependable; if it is nearby and compatible, 5 GHz or 6 GHz may offer better throughput.

4. Check for congestion and interference

A strong signal reading does not necessarily mean the connection will be fast or reliable. Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime, and household devices may contribute to interference. If you can access the router’s wireless settings, a less congested channel may help.

Drivers are pre-loaded on the device—simply plug it in, run the built-in setup file to install in just one click. Note: Not compatible with macOS, Linux, or Windows 8/8.1/XP.
  • For 2.4 GHz, Microsoft recommends choosing among channels 1, 6, and 11 based on nearby networks and signal levels.
  • For 5 GHz, choose a channel with fewer access points nearby.
  • A Wi-Fi analyzer can help show nearby network signal levels and channel use.

Channel options and settings vary by router. For background on placement, bands, and channel selection, see Microsoft’s home-layout guidance and Intel’s quick checks for Wi-Fi connection issues.

5. Find out whether the desktop or the network is the problem

Compare the same Wi-Fi network on another device in the same location. If that device also has trouble, the issue may involve coverage, interference, or router configuration. If other devices work well there but the desktop does not, focus on the PC’s adapter and settings.

  • Review the adapter’s settings and the access point’s configuration.
  • Test another supported band, if one is available.

Intel lists drivers, adapter settings, access-point configuration, and interference among possible causes of Wi-Fi problems in its connection troubleshooting guidance. The comparison with another device helps narrow the cause, but it does not by itself identify a specific fault.

6. Decide whether additional hardware makes sense

Desktop Wi-Fi adapter

Consider a different adapter only if the PC lacks Wi-Fi, does not support the band you need, or remains the outlier after placement and configuration checks. Choose a USB or PCIe form factor that suits your desktop and confirm the adapter supports the bands you want to use. There is no universally best adapter established by these troubleshooting sources.

Wi-Fi extender

An extender may help when moving the router or desktop is impractical. Place it where it can still receive a usable signal from the router, rather than assuming that putting it beside the PC will solve a weak link to the router. Extenders have limited radio capacity, and some use the same radio to receive and retransmit data, which can reduce throughput. Microsoft discusses extenders in its home-layout guidance; Intel describes the capacity trade-off in its Wi-Fi connection checks.

Ethernet for a stationary PC

If the desktop stays in one place and a cable run is feasible, Ethernet is an alternative connection method. It avoids relying on Wi-Fi reception, but it does not strengthen the Wi-Fi signal itself.
