The best SmartThings alternative depends on the devices and voice assistants you already use. Google Home suits many Google and Nest households; Apple Home fits homes built around Apple devices; Amazon Alexa is a natural option for Alexa users; and Home Assistant offers more flexibility for people prepared to manage a dedicated controller. Before switching, check each device’s exact model, required hub and supported features—Matter helps compatible products work across platforms, but it does not guarantee a feature-for-feature replacement.

Choose by ecosystem, device compatibility and control needs

There is no single replacement that is best for every SmartThings household. Compare platforms against the equipment you own, how much local control you want, which app and voice assistant you prefer, and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to take on.

  • Start with your devices: Check the exact model and the controls you rely on, not just the brand. A platform may support a device while exposing fewer of its features.
  • Check radios and hub requirements: Identify whether devices use Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee or another connection, and whether they depend on an existing hub or bridge. Keep that equipment if a device needs it.
  • Decide how much you want to configure: A mainstream app may be simpler to run; a self-managed controller can offer flexibility but brings more setup and upkeep.
  • Check voice and account fit: Consider whether your household already uses Google Assistant, Siri or Alexa, and whether you want to manage devices in that ecosystem.
  • Separate the app choice from a hardware purchase: You may already own a suitable Apple, Google or Amazon hub. Confirm requirements for your particular device mix before buying anything.

Which SmartThings alternative fits your household?

Platform Best fit What to check
Google Home Households looking for one app, voice control and integration with Google or Nest products. Confirm support for the specific device and controls you need. Matter hub requirements differ by model, especially for Thread.
Apple Home Households already using Apple devices and Siri. Check accessory compatibility and whether you have suitable Apple hub hardware for remote access and automations.
Amazon Alexa Households that make Alexa their primary voice interface. Check the exact Echo model: supported radios and connectivity options are not the same across all models.
Home Assistant People who want a flexible, self-managed system and are willing to handle more configuration. Review installation and network prerequisites, radio needs, and whether a native integration offers features Matter does not.

Google Home

Google Home is a reasonable mainstream option if you want a single app and voice control alongside Google and Nest integration. Google says its platform works with more than 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices; that is Google’s own compatibility figure, not an independent comparison across platforms. Its Matter setup guidance lists compatible hub categories and explains that some hubs provide Wi-Fi Matter support while others also act as Thread border routers. Check the model list and the exact device features you need.

Apple Home

Apple Home is a natural fit if the household already uses Apple devices and Siri. Apple says the Home app works across Apple devices, and that HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV can serve as home hubs for remote access and automations. If you already own one of these devices, check whether it meets your intended setup’s requirements before considering new hardware. Apple describes Matter as a way to connect more accessories across platforms, but accessory compatibility still needs to be confirmed. See Apple’s Home app overview.

Amazon Alexa

Alexa is a practical route when voice control through Amazon devices is central to how you use your smart home. Amazon documents local connectivity options that include Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, BLE mesh and Zigbee, but individual Echo models do not necessarily include every radio. Check the specifications for the model you own or plan to use. Amazon’s update log records support for Matter 1.5 on Matter-enabled Echo devices as of March 2026; this does not mean every Echo is Matter-enabled. See Amazon’s local connectivity documentation and Alexa Smart Home updates.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant is the flexible, self-managed option for people comfortable operating a dedicated controller and handling more configuration. Its documentation describes local Matter control and sharing compatible devices across platforms. It also sets out installation and network prerequisites, including Thread border-router requirements where relevant. Before relying on Matter alone, compare the controls it exposes with the product’s native integration: Home Assistant notes that a Hue light controlled through Matter may offer basic controls, while the native Hue integration includes additional features. What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is an IP-based smart-home control standard designed to improve interoperability among compatible products. It runs over network infrastructure such as Wi-Fi or Thread. The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes its goal as enabling native interoperability across brands, and Google says Matter devices can be controlled locally over the home network. Google also documents multi-admin, which lets a compatible device be controlled from multiple Matter-certified platforms. Google’s Matter help page says: “Cross-platform control: Matter-enabled devices can be simultaneously controlled in multiple Matter-certified smart home apps like Google Home, Apple Homekit, Amazon Alexa, and more.” See the Connectivity Standards Alliance overview of Matter.

  • Matter does not promise every feature: Support varies by device category, controller and product. A platform may provide basic control while a manufacturer’s native integration exposes more features.
  • Thread is not Matter: Thread is a network transport; Matter is the control standard. A Thread logo alone does not establish Matter support.
  • Thread devices need a Thread border router: Check whether your chosen hub provides Thread routing; a Wi-Fi-only Matter hub is not the same thing.
  • Multi-admin requires compatible equipment on each platform: Sharing a device across controllers is possible when supported, but each platform needs the relevant Matter-capable hub and may expose different features.
  • Google says IPv6 must be enabled: Its guidance says IPv6 needs to be on for Matter to work properly on the home network.
  • Device sharing is not automation migration: Matter documentation establishes compatible device control across platforms, not automatic transfer of SmartThings routines or settings.

Check compatibility before you switch

  1. Make an inventory. Record each device’s exact model, connection type, hub or bridge dependencies, and the features or automations you actually use.
  2. Check the destination platform’s support. Look up the specific model and the controls you need in the platform’s compatibility information. Do not treat a brand match or Matter logo as proof of full support.
  3. Confirm the required hardware. For Thread products, verify that the chosen hub acts as a Thread border router. For devices that depend on a separate bridge or hub, check whether that equipment remains part of the setup.
  4. Review network and setup prerequisites. For Matter on Google Home, Google calls for IPv6 to be enabled. For Home Assistant, review its installation, network and Thread guidance before choosing a controller.
  5. Compare native integration with Matter. If an important product feature is missing through Matter, check whether the platform offers a native integration that preserves it.
  6. Plan automations separately. Re-create and test routines on the new platform rather than assuming they will transfer with the devices.
