Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAfter changing graphics cards, first work out whether you have a monitor “no signal,” a blank Windows screen, or a crash/restart. Then check the display connection, choose a driver action based on when the problem began, and verify the new card’s installation and power. These symptoms can come from drivers, settings, cooling, power, or other components; none alone proves the GPU is defective.
Identify what is failing and when
“Black screen” can describe different failures. A monitor that says “no signal” points first to the display path or graphics output. A blank display while Windows may still be running calls for Windows display and recovery checks. A stop-code screen or sudden restart is a system crash, which can involve hardware, drivers, or software. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes blank-screen troubleshooting from stop-code troubleshooting (Microsoft: troubleshoot black or blank screen errors; Microsoft: troubleshoot blue-screen errors).
- Before Windows starts: note whether the monitor reports no signal, whether the PC completes its startup sequence, and whether the system restarts.
- At sign-in or on the desktop: check whether Windows seems responsive, whether a cursor is visible, and whether the screen is blank or merely on the wrong output.
- Only in games or demanding workloads: record whether the application closes, the PC reboots, the display goes blank, or performance stutters while Windows remains available.
Start with display and Windows checks
- Confirm the monitor is powered on, its input matches the connected cable, and the cable is firmly connected. When using a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to an output on that card rather than an unrelated motherboard display output.
- If possible, test a different cable or monitor. This helps distinguish a display-path problem from a Windows or GPU failure.
- If Windows responds but the screen is blank or frozen, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft says a beep or screen flicker may indicate that the reset occurred.
- If Windows may be sending the picture to another display, press Windows + P and cycle through display modes.
If the screen remains unusable or Windows repeatedly restarts, use Windows Recovery Environment and Safe Mode to reach driver troubleshooting. Back up important files before disruptive recovery actions when you can. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14 (Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps).
Choose the driver action that fits the timing
If the trouble began after a driver update
Try rolling back the display driver before replacing it. In Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open the graphics card’s properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Windows may not offer rollback when it has no previous driver to restore. Microsoft recommends rollback when a problem starts after an update (Microsoft: update drivers through Device Manager).

If the driver is missing, corrupted, or still suspect
Get a driver for the exact GPU and Windows version from the GPU vendor or the system maker. For a laptop or an OEM-built computer, the system maker’s package may be the appropriate choice. Follow that vendor’s current update or uninstall-and-reinstall instructions rather than assuming every system uses the same package.
AMD documents a Factory Reset option in its driver installer for a clean installation and recommends checking driver release notes. NVIDIA recommends reinstalling the driver; its stability guidance mentions Display Driver Uninstaller as an option for advanced users. A clean reinstall can address a corrupted or conflicting installation, but it does not establish that the graphics card itself is faulty. Prefer the vendor’s cleanup instructions; a third-party cleaner is not a required first step (AMD: troubleshooting graphics stability; NVIDIA: GeForce driver and stability guidance).

If you cannot reach the desktop, use Safe Mode through Windows Recovery Environment and attempt rollback or removal there, as appropriate. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling drivers without noting whether each change affects the symptom.
Return the system to stock settings
Temporarily remove tuning and utility software as variables. Restore CPU, memory, and GPU to factory settings, disable overclocking, and close third-party monitoring or performance-tuning utilities. If the issue continues, a Windows clean boot can help identify whether a startup app or service is conflicting; Microsoft describes clean boot as a way to isolate software conflicts (Microsoft: perform a clean boot in Windows).

Check the card, its power, and cooling
Shut the computer down and disconnect it from power before opening the case. Follow the graphics-card and computer manuals. Check that the card is fully seated in the primary PCIe slot and that every power connector required by the card is attached. If you use a PCIe riser, remove it for initial stability checks when practical.
Verify power requirements for the exact graphics card and system rather than choosing a PSU by symptoms or headline wattage alone. AMD recommends using separate PSU cables directly from the power supply for discrete GPUs. NVIDIA notes that compatibility depends on factors beyond wattage. Neither a crash nor a black screen by itself establishes that the PSU needs replacement (AMD: graphics-card stability and power guidance; NVIDIA: stability troubleshooting; NVIDIA: graphics-card system requirements and compatibility).

If the PC remains stable enough, check temperatures and fan operation during the workload that triggers the problem. Poor airflow, overheating, or a fan issue can contribute to instability. Do not keep running stress tests if the computer is shutting down or showing signs of electrical or thermal trouble. Vendor troubleshooting identifies overheating and ventilation among possible stability factors, not proof of a particular failed part.

| What you observe | Useful next distinction |
|---|---|
| No signal before Windows or at startup | Check monitor input, cable, GPU output, card seating, and required power connectors. |
| Blank screen while Windows may be running | Try the graphics-driver reset and display-mode shortcut; use Recovery Environment and Safe Mode if needed. |
| Problem starts after a driver update | Try Device Manager rollback if available; otherwise use the GPU or system maker’s driver guidance. |
| Stutter or crash only under load | Test at stock settings and examine cooling, power suitability, driver notes, and the affected app or game. |
| Stop code or full restart | Record the exact stop code and consider drivers, software, and components beyond the GPU. |
If the fault persists, record the GPU model, previous GPU, PSU model, Windows version, driver version, exact error or stop code, whether the PC reboots or remains running, and whether the problem happens at idle or only under load. Check the GPU driver’s release notes and the game or application’s known issues. Other components—including CPU, memory, motherboard, storage, or another device—can produce symptoms during intensive workloads. NVIDIA’s general stability article was updated 2021-09-29, so use it for broad checks and verify current, issue-specific guidance for your exact GPU and driver (NVIDIA GeForce driver and stability guidance; AMD graphics stability guidance).
If a stock configuration and a known-good vendor driver do not resolve the issue, seek vendor support or component-level diagnosis. There is no established universal fix-success rate for these symptoms, and the symptoms alone cannot identify a failed part.
