Christian Hülsmeyer’s Telemobiloskop was an operable radio-reflection detector demonstrated in 1904. It sent out electromagnetic waves, detected reflections from metallic objects such as ships, and indicated their direction—the core idea behind radar. It was an important proof of concept, not a modern radar: its limited range and practical shortcomings delayed adoption.
What was the Telemobiloskop?
The Telemobiloskop was a sender-receiver apparatus invented by German engineer Christian Hülsmeyer. Germany’s patent office describes it as a device for reporting distant metallic objects to an observer using electric waves; the Deutsches Museum holds a model of the apparatus and identifies it as the first radar. German Patent and Trade Mark Office: Radar
Hülsmeyer received German patent DE165546 in 1904. The patent was granted on 30 April, according to RadarTutorial. RadarTutorial: History of Radar
How did Hülsmeyer’s device work?
The Telemobiloskop used a spark-gap transmitter, simple parabolic antennas, a detector, and an indicator. It transmitted radio waves toward an area and detected energy reflected by a metallic target. The indicator could signal a target and show its direction; the device was designed to ring a bell when a barge passed within several hundred meters. - Exclusive Shared Alerts - Connect to the Drive Smarter community to get live alerts from other drivers across the country. With Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility, you can view your route and interact with alerts on your vehicle's display.
- Long Range Detection – Next generation updateable IVT Filter and advanced anti-falsing circuitry intelligently reduces false alerts from blind spot monitoring systems and other vehicle avoidance systems.
- Early Warnings – Digital Signal Processing provides faster processing for all incoming laser gun signals and rapidly provides accurate alerts, making you aware of a threat before it is right in front of you.
- Everything You Need - The Cobra RAD 480i radar detector comes with a 12V vehicle power cord, suction cup car windshield mount, and a hook and loop fastener for dash mounting, for wherever the road takes you.
That sequence—transmit energy, receive an echo, and use the return to identify a target—is the conceptual link to radar. The original apparatus chiefly indicated presence and direction; it did not have the precise timing and signal processing used by later systems to determine range reliably.
What did the 1904 demonstrations prove?
On 17 May 1904, Hülsmeyer publicly demonstrated the device near Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge. Fraunhofer FKIE records that it detected ships on the Rhine from reflections of high-frequency electromagnetic waves. Hülsmeyer was 22 at the time. Fraunhofer FKIE: 120 Years of Radar

- UNSURPASSED RANGE & SENSITIVITY: Industry Leading Performance with Advanced False Alert Filtering is THE choice for drivers who demand the highest level of protection.
- DUAL ANTENNA'S WITH DIRECTIONAL ARROWS: allows the R7 to detect threats from all 4 directions 360° protection, with Arrows displaying the direction of the threat, it even shows the band & signal strength for each. Perfect just got better!
- GPS TECHNOLOGY: Using GPS the R7 can remember and mute common false alerts (such as retail store automatic doors) along your regularly driven routes so you never have to listen to the same false alert twice.
- RED LIGHT AND SPEED CAMERA ALERTS: Preloaded Red Light and Speed Camera locations with Free Database and Firmware updates ensures your detector will never be out of date.
- LARGE MULTI-COLOR OLED DISPLAY: is easy-to-Read and allows for more useful information to be displayed at once, including up to 4 signals simultaneously. This improves your overall situational awareness.
IEEE also recounts a demonstration in which the apparatus detected a metal gate hidden behind a curtain and indicated its direction. These demonstrations showed that radio reflections could reveal the presence and bearing of an otherwise obscured metallic object—not that the device could locate targets with the accuracy or reliability of a mature radar system.
Did the Telemobiloskop measure distance?
The first operational apparatus primarily detected objects and indicated direction; it did not reliably determine their range. Hülsmeyer pursued distance measurement in a follow-on patent application dated 11 November 1904, which addressed estimating distance by measuring elevation angle. The associated patent was published in 1906. RadarTutorial: History of Radar

This follow-on work connects the invention to the “ranging” in radar, but it should not be confused with modern radar’s direct, precise measurement of distance from signal travel time.
Why was the invention not adopted immediately?
Demonstrating radio reflection was not enough to make the device dependable in everyday maritime or military use. RadarTutorial notes that contemporary high-frequency components limited performance and that the Rhine tests did not produce outstanding range. Other practical obstacles included:

Also, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, R/TACH app support, and our Speed and Red-Light database included.
- BUILT-IN GPS WITH AUTO MUTE MEMORY - The R4w can remember and automatically mute false alerts (such as retail store door alarm), along your routes so you never have to listen to the same false alert twice.
- MULTI-COLOR OLED DISPLAY - An easy-to-read display allows for more useful information to be displayed at once, improving your overall situational awareness.
- VOICE ALERTS - Voice alerts provide clear communication allowing for hands-free operation. Voice alerts are programmable to fit your style so you can keep your eyes on the road with no distractions.
- ADVANCED K/KA BAND FILTERING - The R4w has the best K/KA Band filtering resulting in fewer false alerts from blind-spot monitoring and collision avoidance systems.
- Limited reach: the designed detection range was several hundred meters, as described on the IEEE Milestone plaque.
- Unreliable ranging: the apparatus could indicate approximate direction but could not reliably establish how far away a target was.
- Interference: reflections from multiple objects in busy traffic could make targets difficult to distinguish.
- Operational difficulty: limited capability and difficult operation reduced its usefulness.
The gap between Hülsmeyer’s proof of principle and dependable radar systems reflects the need for better components, accurate timing, signal processing, and clearer displays. The Telemobiloskop was not a pulse-Doppler radar or a networked surveillance system.

The Telemobiloskop established a practical precedent: electromagnetic waves could be directed toward a scene, reflected from a target, and detected to provide information about that target. Later radar systems greatly extended that idea with improved electronics and methods for measuring range and interpreting returns. Hülsmeyer’s device did not itself supply those later capabilities, but it demonstrated the essential radio-reflection approach in an operating apparatus.

Fraunhofer FKIE describes the 1904 demonstration as the birth of radar and quotes radar researcher Wolfgang Koch, head of radar-related research at the institute: “In a sense, Hülsmeyer has laid the foundations for all modern sensor technology.” Fraunhofer FKIE: 120 Years of Radar
How is the Telemobiloskop remembered?
The Deutsches Museum preserves a model of Hülsmeyer’s sender-receiver apparatus. IEEE recognized the demonstration with a Milestone plaque near the Hohenzollern Bridge site. The plaque calls the Telemobiloskop “the world’s first operable device to detect radio reflections, a predecessor of radar.” IEEE History Center: Telemobiloskop Demonstration, 1904
The distinction matters: the Telemobiloskop was a working predecessor that established the detection principle, while modern radar systems depend on capabilities and engineering that developed later.
