Nabeel Gareeb was president and CEO of MEMC Electronic Materials from April 2002 until November 12, 2008. Who was Nabeel Gareeb?
Gareeb is best known for leading MEMC Electronic Materials, a manufacturer of electronic-grade silicon wafers used by semiconductor makers. He joined the company as president, CEO and a director in April 2002, and resigned from those positions in November 2008.
His appointment came during a difficult period for MEMC. EE Times reported in 2002 that the company had fallen short of cash in the second half of 2001 and was undertaking a major restructuring when it appointed Gareeb.
What did MEMC make, and what was its strategy under Gareeb?
MEMC supplied electronic-grade silicon wafers to semiconductor manufacturers. In 2005, EE Times described it as the world’s third-largest silicon-wafer supplier. The company’s manufacturing strategy included upgrading existing plants from 200 mm to 300 mm production rather than building entirely new plants.
