For a metal garden shovel or spade, use a hand mill file and follow the blade’s existing bevel if it is visible. Clamp the head securely, file the soil-facing bevel with steady forward strokes, then remove the burr with a light pass on the back. There is no single best angle for every shovel: the original edge and the work it does matter.

Choose a file and prepare the shovel

A hand mill file is the straightforward choice for routine sharpening. University of Wisconsin Extension identifies a 10-inch mill file as a commonly used tool for sharpening shovels and hoes in its Maintaining Lawn and Garden Tools guidance, revised in 2013. Kansas State Research and Extension also recommends hand filing, which takes more time and effort than grinding but allows controlled work.

  • Use a vise or clamp to hold the shovel head steady.
  • Wear safety glasses and sturdy gloves; Wisconsin Extension specifically recommends leather gloves.
  • Use a stiff brush, wire brush, or steel wool to remove packed soil and surface rust, then dry the blade.
  • Check that the head and handle are sound before sharpening.

A grinder can remove metal faster, but reserve it for an edge that is badly dulled or damaged. Kansas State recommends eye and hearing protection for grinding and notes that a ground edge may need a file finish. Avoid prolonged contact; the cited guidance does not establish a universal grinding speed, time, or temperature.

What angle should you sharpen a shovel to?

If the shovel still has a visible bevel, follow it rather than imposing a new angle. Extension recommendations for forming a bevel differ because shovel construction and intended use differ; none is a universal target.

Guidance Recommended angle or approach Context
UF/IFAS, drawing on G. Denny’s 2009 guidance About 45° General shovel sharpening; UF/IFAS cautions that a sharper edge dulls too quickly.
University of Wisconsin Extension, revised 2013 30° Creating a cutting edge on a blunt, square-edged stamped shovel.
Kansas State Research and Extension, MF3288 About 20° for light-duty tools; increase the angle for heavy-duty tools A shallow angle cuts more easily, while a thin edge on a heavy-duty tool can bend. Publication date is not stated.

These figures describe different contexts, not competing instructions to sharpen every shovel alike. A lower, shallower bevel tends to cut more easily but is less durable; a steeper bevel sacrifices some cutting ease for strength. Aim for a serviceable digging edge, not a knife-like one.

How to file the shovel edge

  1. Position the head. Clamp the shovel so it cannot move, with the soil-facing side and cutting edge accessible. Keep the edge oriented safely away from your body. Wisconsin Extension advises filing down the slope across the edge for added safety.
  2. Set the file on the bevel. Place the mill file against the existing bevel. If the edge is blunt and no bevel remains, choose a moderate angle suited to the shovel’s job, using the context above rather than treating one measurement as universal.
  3. File forward. Make long, steady, even strokes across the edge. A mill file cuts on the forward stroke, so ease off on the return. Keep the angle consistent and remove only enough metal to form a clean edge.
  4. Check progress safely. Look closely for a fine burr along the opposite side. Do not run a bare finger along the edge; keep fingers clear while inspecting it.
  5. Remove the burr. Turn the shovel over and make a light, flat pass along the back with the file. Keep that pass flat so you do not round over the bevel. UF/IFAS also describes 300-grit sandpaper for burr removal in its Sharpening Your Tools guidance.
  6. Clean and protect the blade. Wipe away metal filings and debris, then apply a light coating of suitable tool oil or lubricant. Wipe off excess before using the shovel.

File or grinder?

For routine maintenance, the hand file is the more controlled option and avoids the added demands of powered grinding. A grinder may be useful for a badly dulled or damaged edge, but it removes metal quickly and requires eye and hearing protection. If grinding leaves a rough edge, finish it with a file. In either case, preserve a durable bevel rather than chasing the thinnest possible edge.

Sources and scope

This procedure is for metal garden shovels and spades. Snow shovels and tools with non-metal blades may require different care. The angle guidance comes from UF/IFAS, University of Wisconsin Extension, and Kansas State Research and Extension; the recommendations differ by tool condition and workload, so the shovel’s existing bevel is the best starting point when it remains visible.
