Steam Deck does not run Nintendo Switch games through Proton. Switch emulation uses a separate emulator, such as Ryujinx, while Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games on Linux. Whether a particular Switch game works depends on the game, emulator build, required game data and firmware, settings, and the Deck’s performance; there is no universal compatibility guarantee.
Three different layers are involved
Steam Deck is a handheld PC running SteamOS, which Valve describes as Linux-based. Valve says users can run non-Steam games through Proton and add non-Steam games to their Steam libraries. Those features provide ways to run and launch software on the Deck; they do not turn the device into a Switch.
SteamOS and Proton
Proton addresses compatibility between Windows games and Linux. Valve describes it this way: “SteamOS also comes with Proton, a compatibility layer that makes it possible to run your games without any porting work needed from developers.” That statement is about running games on SteamOS, not translating Nintendo Switch games. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ and Steam Deck software page explain these roles.
The Switch emulator
A separate emulator is needed to reproduce the behavior a Switch game expects. Ryubing’s documentation describes Ryujinx as an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator and discusses graphics emulation through OpenGL, Vulkan, or Metal via MoltenVK. These are general project details, not a promise that a particular graphics backend or game will perform well on Steam Deck. Ryubing documentation

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The game data and firmware
An emulator also needs game data and, depending on the setup, firmware. Ryujinx’s setup guide discusses game files and firmware installation from an untrimmed XCI dump. That is a technical description of setup requirements, not a determination that a particular extraction, copy, or use is lawful. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
What “compatible” should mean
Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no threshold. A game may launch but render incorrectly, accept controls but run too slowly, or work for a while before becoming unstable. Reaching a usable result is different from completing the game without significant problems.

- Graphics: Are images, effects, and text rendered correctly?
- Speed and pacing: Is performance usable and consistent, rather than merely capable of displaying a picture?
- Controls: Do inputs work as expected, including any configuration needed for the Deck’s controls?
- Stability and completion: Does the game remain reliable through extended play, and can it be completed?
A useful compatibility report therefore names the game and game version, emulator build, firmware, graphics API, relevant settings, and the specific outcome observed. Emulator updates or changes to the game, firmware, settings, or controller configuration can change that outcome. Ryubing’s documentation lists 8 GiB of RAM as a general minimum requirement for a PC; it does not establish that every Deck configuration or Switch game will meet a particular performance target. Deck Verified is not a Switch-emulation rating
Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown labels describe Valve’s review of Steam titles for Steam Deck. Valve’s criteria cover input, display, seamlessness, and system support. They do not certify Nintendo Switch games running in a third-party emulator, so a Deck Verified badge cannot be used as evidence that an emulated Switch game works. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page

You can add a non-Steam application to Steam for a library or Game Mode launch route, as Valve describes in its Steam Deck FAQ. That changes how you launch the application, not the emulator’s compatibility with an individual game.

Ryubing’s documentation provides general emulator requirements and setup information, but it does not establish a controlled, current compatibility matrix for a particular Steam Deck model. Without a report tied to the specific game, emulator build, and configuration, broad claims such as “Switch games work on Steam Deck” conceal important differences between titles and setups.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The legal context also needs careful limits. The Rhode Island federal court document in Nintendo of America Inc. v. Tropic Haze LLC is a consent judgment and permanent injunction in the Yuzu matter; it is a case-specific outcome, not a contested ruling that every emulator or personal emulation act is unlawful. Separately, Nintendo’s August 17, 2026 GitHub DMCA notice alleges that certain Switch emulator repositories facilitate circumvention under the DMCA. That is Nintendo’s allegation in a takedown notice, not a court finding about every project, fork, user, or jurisdiction. The cited materials do not support a general legal conclusion; applicable rules can depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. Nintendo’s GitHub DMCA notice
