To tell whether QSSR makes a PS5 game look better, first confirm that the game has a QSSR patch and offers the option in its graphics settings. Then compare the same scene with QSSR on and off, changing nothing else. Look closely at fine detail and whether it stays stable during motion.
What QSSR is—and where to find it
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-upscaling option for PS5. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, describing it as a performance-focused tier distinct from PSSR, which Sony calls the higher standard on PS5 Pro. QSSR is not automatically available in every PS5 game: support depends on a title-specific patch and the game’s graphics options. Sony’s announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles whose patches would add QSSR as an option on PS5.
Check the game’s current patch notes and graphics menu. Updating the console alone does not add QSSR to a game that has not been patched to support it.
How to make a fair before-and-after comparison
- Confirm the option is available. Install the game’s relevant update, then look in its graphics settings for QSSR. Menu labels and placement may vary by game.
- Choose a repeatable scene. Find a location where you can hold the camera in the same position and observe the same characters or environment. Keep the game mode, display settings, and scene conditions consistent.
- Change only QSSR. Compare the scene with the option enabled and disabled, returning to the same view each time. If the game mode, resolution behavior, or other settings change too, you cannot confidently attribute the difference to QSSR.
- Inspect details at a consistent viewing distance. Look at thin edges, character features, and fine environment detail. Check whether small features look clearer or more resolved rather than judging only the overall impression.
- Watch the same details in motion. Pan the camera or observe moving characters. Notice whether edges and textures remain steady or flicker, shimmer, or break up.
- Record what you actually see. If a difference is subtle or absent in that scene, say so. One comparison cannot establish that QSSR looks better in every scene or game.
This is a practical way to evaluate the option, not a test procedure prescribed by Sony. Sony describes QSSR’s image improvements qualitatively and does not provide a numerical benchmark or controlled consumer A/B result in its announcement.

What to look for in the image
Fine detail and edges
Compare small features in the same part of the image: narrow edges, character details, and dense geometry. Sony quotes Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, saying QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” and brings out extra detail in busy environments. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, says QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments. Those are developer observations, not independent measurements of every game.
Stability during motion
A still frame may not reveal how reconstruction behaves while the camera or objects move. Watch the same edges and textures as they cross the screen. Sony’s announcement specifically attributes temporal-stability benefits to QSSR, but it does not claim that the option eliminates flicker, shimmer, or other artifacts in every scene.

Overall judgment
Call QSSR an improvement only if the comparison shows a visible benefit under the conditions you tested. Detail that looks sharper in a still view may be less convincing if it becomes unstable in motion; weigh both observations rather than relying on a single frame.
