Do not assume every sensor is a camera or that glass cleaner is safe: vehicles use cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors in different locations, and manufacturers specify different cleaning methods. If the warning remains—or the windshield, bumper or sensor mount was damaged or repaired—arrange a qualified inspection rather than continuing to clean or replacing parts by guesswork.
Why an ADAS sensor can report that it is blocked
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) depend on sensors having a usable view of the road or surrounding objects. Depending on the vehicle, hardware may sit at the windshield, grille, bumper, mirrors or elsewhere on the body. For example, Hyundai’s 2025 owner guidance identifies a front-view camera, front radar, corner radar and multiple ultrasonic sensors. A warning may appear when dirt or weather interferes with a sensing area, but physical impact can also damage or misalign a sensor even if no warning appears. Hyundai owner manuals and warranty information.
Contamination is only one possible cause. A Nissan technical bulletin hosted by NHTSA describes a lane-camera warning that can blink because of material on the windshield viewing area, snow or frost, or temporary fogging; its procedure calls for cleaning or repairing the glass as needed before considering camera replacement. Separately, NHTSA-hosted degradation-testing material lists debris, blockage, mount displacement, scratches or pitting, water absorption and discoloration among conditions examined for camera, radar and lidar categories. These sources describe mechanisms and test conditions, not how often contamination causes warnings across all vehicles.
What can block or interfere with ADAS sensors?
- Weather and road debris: mud, road salt, snow, ice, frost, fog and rain can obscure a camera view or interfere with a sensor’s operating path. Insects and other foreign material can also cover the camera viewing area. NHTSA-hosted sensor degradation testing material.
- Glass problems: stickers, tint or coatings, scratches, damage, moisture inside a camera area, and temporary fogging can affect camera sensing. Hyundai warns that tinted or coated windshields, stickers, bugs, snow and rain may reduce or temporarily limit Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Hyundai owner manuals and warranty information.
- Obstructions or changes around the vehicle: aftermarket deer guards, bumper guards and snow plows can obstruct radar. Damage or displacement to a bumper, grille, sensor cover or mount can also matter, even if the sensor surface looks clean. Bendix ADAS maintenance guidance.
- Cabin reflections: Hyundai cautions that reflective objects on the dashboard can interfere with camera sensing. Hyundai owner manuals and warranty information.
How to clean an ADAS camera, radar cover or sensor area
Use this as a safety sequence, not a universal recipe. The location and permitted cleaner depend on the vehicle and sometimes its build date. Find the relevant instructions in the owner manual before touching the sensing area.

- Park safely and identify the sensor. Use the owner manual to locate the camera, radar cover or other sensor associated with the warning. Do not assume a panel that looks like a sensor is safe to wipe.
- Remove loose material gently. Clear loose mud, salt, snow or ice without scraping a lens or radar cover with a blade or other sharp object. Avoid pressing, striking or levering against the sensor assembly.
- Use only the vehicle maker’s specified method. Tesla’s instructions vary by vehicle and procedure: cited guidance for newer vehicles says to spray water on the camera lens and dry it with a microfiber cloth, while an earlier procedure says not to wipe exposed debris with a hand or cloth before rinsing. Tesla also cautions against chemical-based or abrasive cleaners. Check the instructions that apply to your vehicle rather than applying one Tesla procedure to every model or build date. Tesla Model 3 Owner’s Manual: Camera Care.
- Follow different instructions for other makes. Hyundai specifies mild soap or neutral detergent, followed by a thorough water rinse, and prohibits cleaners containing acidic or alkaline detergents for camera lenses. It also warns against strong water pressure or impact on sensor assemblies. Hyundai owner manuals and warranty information.
- Dry and recheck as instructed. Where the manual calls for drying, use the specified method and wait until the sensing area is clear. Check whether the warning has cleared only after cleaning and drying; a warning that persists is not a reason to keep applying cleaner or pressure.
A clean microfiber cloth is appropriate only where the vehicle’s instructions permit it. A spray bottle containing plain water is likewise an option only when the manual allows water to be sprayed on that area. Neither is a universal ADAS cleaning kit.
What not to do around ADAS sensors
- Do not use sharp or abrasive tools on a lens, sensor cover or windshield viewing area.
- Do not apply harsh chemicals or glass cleaner unless the vehicle maker specifically approves them for that sensor and surface; the instructions differ by make and procedure.
- Do not put stickers or tint over sensing areas or add unapproved accessories that can obstruct radar or camera views.
- Do not assume a clean exterior surface rules out a damaged or misaligned sensor, especially after an impact or nearby repair.
Bendix specifically warns that radar can be impaired by obstructions such as deer guards, bumper guards and snow plows. Hyundai also cautions against windshield stickers or tint and dashboard objects that reflect into the camera’s view.

How often should you clean ADAS sensors?
Follow the schedule in the manual for your vehicle. Tesla’s cited guidance recommends weekly camera cleaning in wet weather and monthly cleaning in dry weather for the specified vehicles covered by that instruction. That schedule is not a general interval for all makes, sensor types or models. Clean sooner if the relevant area is visibly obstructed or a warning appears, while still using the vehicle-specific method. Tesla Model 3 Owner’s Manual: Camera Care.

Stop treating the problem as ordinary dirt and arrange qualified diagnosis if the warning remains after the relevant area is clean and dry, if you see damage or moisture inside a camera area, or if the vehicle has had work or damage around the windshield, bumper, grille, sensor or mount. Sensor position can be affected even when a surface appears clean; Hyundai says an impacted sensor may be damaged or misaligned without a dashboard warning and directs repair or replacement through an authorized dealer. After windshield, bumper or sensor-mount work, ask the repairer whether the vehicle’s ADAS system requires calibration and how they will verify operation. The need depends on the vehicle and the work performed, so do not assume every glass replacement has the same requirement—or that cleaning can correct a calibration issue. Nissan’s bulletin similarly directs technicians to correct dirty or damaged windshield glass and verify that the warning has stopped before considering camera replacement.
