Samsung rates it IP68 and describes protection under a specific submersion condition: up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. That rating does not guarantee safety in every water situation or establish the condition of an individual, older, or damaged watch.
What IP68 means for the Gear S3
Samsung identifies both the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier as IP68 water- and dust-resistant. Its Gear S3 guidance permits ordinary exposures such as rain, showering, and washing dishes, while setting clear limits: do not immerse the watch deeper than 1.5 m or keep it submerged longer than 30 minutes. These are stated conditions, not a blanket guarantee for every kind of use. Samsung Singapore Support; Samsung Global Newsroom.
Can you shower or swim with a Gear S3?
Showering and everyday splashes
Samsung lists showering, rain, and dishwashing among exposures the Gear S3 can handle under its guidance. However, water can still enter the device, and Samsung cautions against strong moving water. The touchscreen and other features may also fail to work normally while the watch is in water.
Swimming and diving
Do not treat the IP68 depth figure as a general swimming or diving recommendation. Samsung explains that IP testing concerns ingress protection under specified conditions; it does not account for the water pressure created during aquatic activities. The Gear S3-specific guidance identifies IP68, not 5 ATM. Samsung discusses a 5 ATM rating for other wearables, including the Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro, but that rating does not apply to the Gear S3. Samsung’s explanation of IP and ATM ratings.

Why an older or damaged Gear S3 may be less resistant
A product rating cannot confirm the seal on a particular used watch. Samsung warns that dropping or striking the device may damage its water- and dust-resistance features. Samsung’s cited guidance does not quantify how resistance changes with age or provide a method for checking an individual watch’s current seal. If the watch has been impacted or is visibly damaged, do not rely on its original rating to judge whether immersion is safe. Samsung US Support water-resistance tips.
What to do after the watch gets wet
- After exposure to salt water, ionized water, or alcoholic beverages, rinse the watch with clean water, then dry it with a clean, soft cloth.
- Dry wet hands and the watch. If the speaker or microphone is wet, call audio may sound unclear until those parts are wiped or thoroughly dried.
- Do not assume the touchscreen or other features will operate normally while the watch is in water.
These steps follow Samsung’s Gear S3 handling guidance. Samsung Singapore Support.
