Not necessarily. Always-On Display (AOD) uses power to keep a dimmed version of the screen visible, while Raise to Wake uses power when motion activates the screen. Which one drains more depends on the device, the display settings, and how often—and for how long—the screen wakes. There is no reliable universal head-to-head result across phones and watches.
Why the two settings use battery differently
Always-On Display keeps doing some work
AOD is a reduced-power display state, not a display that uses no power. On Apple Watch, Apple says the screen dims and app interfaces update much less frequently than when an app is in the foreground. The actual load also depends on what the display shows: Apple’s developer guidance notes that OLED pixels use power individually, so a darker, simpler screen can use less than bright, colorful content. Apple’s Always On design guidance and its WWDC22 battery-consumption session explain these behaviors.
Raise to Wake costs power when it triggers
Raise to Wake activates the display after the device detects the gesture. Its battery impact therefore depends on how often it triggers and how long the screen remains on afterward. Frequent wrist or phone movements can mean frequent wake events, but their impact varies with the device and the user’s habits.
What the available comparisons establish
Official support guidance treats AOD as an option to turn off when saving battery: Samsung’s Galaxy support page and Google Pixel battery guidance recommend disabling it as a battery-saving measure. Those recommendations establish that AOD can use battery; they do not quantify its drain against Raise to Wake.

Apple’s iPhone battery-test notes say audio playback time decreases when AOD is visible compared with when the phone is face down or covered. That is evidence of a cost in that test context, not a direct comparison with Raise to Wake. Apple’s iPhone battery test information describes the comparison.
A Macworld test published October 1, 2026, examined iPhone AOD consumption against the display turning off, not against Raise to Wake. It also discusses circumstances in which AOD is suppressed, such as Sleep mode, face-down placement, a paired Apple Watch not being nearby, or CarPlay. Read the Macworld test for those iPhone-specific conditions.

One Apple Watch owner reported three 30-hour tests on a Series 7 GPS running watchOS 9.3.1 with different display and wake settings. That is an individual, device-specific self-test, not a published study or a result that can establish a universal battery difference. The user’s post provides the details.
What changes the result on your device
- Model, software, and battery condition: different devices and operating-system versions can handle display states differently.
- Screen content and brightness: a dim, mostly black AOD face is not equivalent to a brighter or more colorful one.
- Wake frequency and duration: the more often Raise to Wake activates the screen, and the longer it stays on, the greater its potential cost.
- Other activity: complications, notifications, and background tasks also affect battery use, making an uncontrolled comparison hard to interpret.
- Automatic suppression: sleep, pocket, or face-down detection and other context-dependent behavior can change when AOD is visible.
How to choose or compare the settings
If longer battery life matters most
Try turning AOD off first. Google and Samsung explicitly list disabling it as a battery-saving step, though neither gives a quantified advantage over Raise to Wake. If you want to keep AOD for quick glances, use a simpler, darker face or lower brightness where your device allows it.
