CeRAM is an experimental nonvolatile memory technology, not a memory product you can currently buy. Arm evaluated it as a possible embedded-memory technology, then in 2020 transferred its CeRAM intellectual property to Cerfe Labs, a startup tasked with developing and licensing correlated-electron memory. Public reports describe prototypes and funded development, but do not establish a mass-produced CeRAM chip or a consumer product.

What CeRAM is

CeRAM means correlated electron random-access memory. Its proposed active material is a transition-metal oxide, including doped nickel oxide. An applied electrical signal switches the material reversibly between conducting and insulating states, allowing those states to represent stored information. Because the state remains without continuous power, CeRAM is described as nonvolatile.

That makes the idea different from SRAM, which stores data in volatile electronic circuits, and more comparable in broad purpose to other nonvolatile memories such as flash. The distinction is in the switching material and physics: CeRAM is based on correlated-electron effects in an oxide rather than the charge-storage approach used by conventional flash.

How the reported device works

The 2014 EE Times account described a lower-doped active nickel-oxide film between highly conducting doped-nickel-oxide buffer layers and metal electrodes. It attributed switching to reversible bulk metal-insulator transitions at room temperature and low voltage. Its explanation included single-site oxidation and reduction and quantum-tunneling effects, with electron interactions and the material’s density of states central to the mechanism.

  • Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
  • Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
  • Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.

Those details describe the mechanism presented in that 2014 report; they should not be read as an independently reproduced performance result. The practical concept is that an electrical pulse changes the oxide’s resistance, and the resistance state can then be read back.

Why Arm paid attention

The 2014 evaluation

In 2014, EE Times reported that Arm was evaluating CeRAM for possible embedded nonvolatile-memory offerings after discussions with Symetrix had begun more than three months earlier. The proposed appeal was a thin-film device that might switch quickly, use low voltage and power, avoid a forming step, tolerate a broad temperature range, and scale through lithographic fabrication. These were prospective advantages, not proof that CeRAM had displaced established embedded memory.

The 2020 spinout

On 2 October 2020, Arm announced that it had spun out Cerfe Labs to develop and license new nonvolatile memories based on correlated-electron materials and ferroelectric transistors. Arm transferred its full CeRAM intellectual-property portfolio—more than 150 patent families—and Arm researchers joined the startup. Arm chief executive Simon Segars said the move would put the team in a more agile position as Arm sharpened its focus on its core semiconductor IP business.

Arm’s later 30-year retrospective describes Cerfe Labs as exploring CeRAM and other nonvolatile memory types following work by Arm Research and the Physical Design Group. The corporate logic is straightforward: Arm’s core business is processor IP, while turning a novel memory material into a manufacturable product requires sustained device, materials, and foundry development.

What performance has been reported

The available figures come from Cerfe Labs and government program records, not a published head-to-head comparison against commercial SRAM or flash. Keep the distinctions in mind: a material transition time is not the same as a complete memory access time, and demonstration results are not guarantees for a finished product.

Claim or result What was reported Attribution and qualification
Read and write 2 ns Cerfe Labs reports this for early test chips; it is not a general commercial specification.
Material switching Some materials switch in under 100 femtoseconds Cerfe Labs describes this as a material-physics result, not full system-memory access time.
Switching voltage Below 0.6 V Cerfe Labs claim for forming-free devices.
High-temperature operation Operation demonstrated at 300 °C; retention for more than 100 hours at 500 °C Cerfe Labs / U.S. Air Force SBIR 2024 Phase II award record.
Radiation Static gamma-radiation immunity up to 1 Mrad Cerfe Labs / U.S. Air Force SBIR 2024 Phase II award record.

Cerfe Labs also reports operation from cryogenic temperatures to high-temperature automotive, space, and power environments, while saying the device limits have not yet been fully tested. The company presents resistance to voltage or current disturbance, magnetic fields, and ionizing radiation as potential consequences of the underlying physics. These are company claims and should not be treated as independently established product guarantees.

Could CeRAM replace SRAM or flash?

There is not enough public evidence to say that CeRAM can replace either one generally. A memory choice depends on more than whether it is fast or nonvolatile: designers also need validated data on energy, endurance, retention, cell area, manufacturability, process compatibility, and performance across operating conditions. The public CeRAM figures above do not provide a matched comparison across those measures.

Memory type Basic role What can be concluded here
CeRAM Proposed nonvolatile memory using correlated-electron material switching. Prototype-oriented reports and development claims exist; comparative product-level results are not established.
SRAM Volatile memory commonly used where fast access is important. No cited head-to-head CeRAM-versus-SRAM measurement is provided.
Flash Nonvolatile memory used for persistent storage. No cited head-to-head CeRAM-versus-flash measurement is provided.

Accordingly, CeRAM is best understood as a possible additional memory option, especially where nonvolatility and operation in demanding environments matter, rather than as a demonstrated universal substitute for existing memory.

What the Air Force work is trying to prove

A 2024 U.S. Air Force SBIR Phase II award record gives a more concrete picture of the development stage. It says Cerfe Labs had demonstrated the high-temperature and radiation results listed above, and describes funded work targeting 32-bit prototypes, heterogeneous integration with GaN and other transistors, and a plan for future integration into GaN or SiC process flows. A prior RF-focused SBIR record reports switching down to 2 ns and a path toward integrated nanoscale RF circuits.

These programs point toward specialized applications and integration experiments, not a finished general-purpose memory line. A prototype target or planned process-flow integration is not evidence that a foundry currently offers CeRAM as a production option.

Can you buy CeRAM?

No documented consumer CeRAM chip, DIMM, SSD, microcontroller, development kit, or retail listing is established by the available public evidence. Cerfe Labs presents itself as an IP and device-technology company, while the cited government programs describe prototype and transition work. For now, CeRAM is at the research, licensing, and partner-prototype stage—not an off-the-shelf memory purchase.
