One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNeither a red dot nor a holographic sight is universally better for an AR-15. Choose a red dot/reflex model if you want a simple dot and value the long battery-life specification of some models; choose a holographic model if you prefer a ring-and-dot or another more complex reticle. Compare the exact models, including reticle, battery conditions, weight with its mount, rail fit, and optical-axis height—not just the sight category.
What is the difference between a red dot and a holographic sight?
“Red dot” is often used as a broad retail term for electronic sights, but the cited Aimpoint examples are specifically LED reflex or collimator sights. EOTECH describes its Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS) technology as transmission holography. Those are different ways of producing the sight’s aiming image; the distinction alone does not establish which is faster, more accurate, or more durable in use.
The specifications below are examples from named products, not category-wide guarantees. The available manufacturer pages and manuals do not provide an independent head-to-head test establishing a universal performance winner.
How do their reticles compare?
Red dot: a single aiming point on the cited Duty RDS
Aimpoint lists the Duty RDS with a 2 MOA dot. That is a model-specific specification, not a description of every reflex sight.
#1 Best Overall
- The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
- Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
- The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
- An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
- With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery
Holographic: ring-and-dot options on cited EOTECH models
EOTECH’s EXPS2 and EXPS3 manuals describe a reticle with a 68 MOA ring around a 1 MOA center dot. Other patterns depend on the particular model. The practical choice is whether you prefer a single dot or a ring with additional visual references; preference should be assessed with the specific reticle you are considering.
What do the battery specifications actually tell you?
Published runtime figures depend on the model, brightness setting, battery chemistry, and test conditions. These examples are not a controlled comparison at matched settings:
Rank #2
- [ More Accurate ] From 3-4MOA to 2MOA. This Updated MidTen 2MOA red dot sight is more accurate. Unlimited eye relief makes for quick sighting. Multi-coated scratch resistant lens provides optimized image clarity and increases light transmission during low light situations.
- [ Optimized Red Dot ] make the dot centered in the inner tube and not blurry, reduce red glare and extra red lights in the view.
- [ Multi Levels of Brightness ] 11 red dot brightness settings provide optimal visibility in any light conditions. Settings 1-5 are suitable for dim or rainy environment while settings 6-9 are better for a bright or sunny day. Settings 10-11 are good for sunny noon.
- [ Dependable ] A shockproof aluminum housing displays extreme robustness. Nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed. Fully waterproof with sealed housing. Nitrogen inside the scope ensures interior optical surfaces won’t fog due to humidity or rapid temperature change.
- [ 2 Height Mount Options ] Offers two height options (Low and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness), lending its functionality on any platform.
| Model | Published runtime | Conditions stated by manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Aimpoint Duty RDS | 30,000 hours | Daylight setting 6, 15,000 lux, room temperature. Aimpoint product specification, accessed 2026. |
| EOTECH 518 HWS | 2,500 continuous hours with lithium batteries; 2,200 continuous hours with alkaline batteries | Nominal setting 12, room temperature. EOTECH 518 operator manual; its publication date is not established here. |
Because the products and stated settings differ, these numbers should not be treated as a like-for-like test or as typical runtimes for either entire sight category. Check the manual for the exact model and consider whether its battery type and controls suit your intended use.
Will the sight fit your AR-15?
Confirm the rail interface, included mount, and optical-axis height for the exact SKU. A sight that attaches to the rail may still sit at a height or configuration you do not want, so check the complete mounting setup rather than the sight body alone.

Weight figures are useful only when you compare equivalent configurations—sight-only with sight-only, or complete mounted setups with complete mounted setups.
Rank #4
- Reticle allows for 4 different styles. Dot, Circle/Dot, Crosshair/Dot, Crosshair/Circle/Dot combinations. All in one sight!
- A 33mm lens provides quick target acquisition. Wide field of view to maintain situational awareness.
- Very sturdy and secure rail mounting system. Will not come loose, made to last.
- Parallax corrected & unlimited eye-relief, where the dot goes, so does the bullet!
- Ultralight, waterproof and shockproof - Powered one 3V lithium battery (included).
| Model | Published weight | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Aimpoint Duty RDS | 110 g sight only; 160 g with included mount | Aimpoint product page specification. |
| EOTECH 518 HWS | 13.8 oz | EOTECH operator manual; whether this figure includes a mount is not stated there. |
| EOTECH 552 HWS | 11.5 oz | EOTECH operator manual; whether this figure includes a mount is not stated there. |
Water ratings are also model-specific: Aimpoint lists 25 m submersion for the Duty RDS; EOTECH’s 518 manual lists 10 ft water resistance, and its 552 manual lists 33 ft. These manufacturer specifications do not establish that one category as a whole is more durable than the other.

Which type makes more sense for your priorities?
- Lean toward a red dot/reflex sight if you want a straightforward single-dot reticle and a particular model’s documented battery specification fits your needs. Confirm the setting and environmental conditions attached to any runtime figure.
- Lean toward a holographic sight if you prefer the ring-and-dot reticle available on models such as the cited EOTECH EXPS sights, or want one of the other reticle patterns offered by a specific model.
- Compare exact models before deciding if weight, rail interface, optical height, water rating, or controls matter most. Specs vary within both categories, and the available sources do not establish a universal winner for speed, accuracy, or durability.
A checklist for choosing an AR-15 optic
- Look at the exact reticle pattern and decide whether you want a single dot, a ring-and-dot, or another model-specific option.
- Read the model’s battery specification with its chemistry, brightness setting, and test conditions attached.
- Compare weight on the same basis, including whether the stated figure includes a mount.
- Check the rail interface, included hardware, and optical-axis height against your intended setup.
- Review model-specific environmental ratings and controls in the current product information or manual.
- Choose based on these documented differences and your reticle preference; do not assume category labels alone predict practical performance.
