Help your child feel the beat before asking them to play it: sing or speak a familiar phrase, move to a comfortable pulse together, and then carry that same pulse to a simple xylophone pattern. You can quietly pat or clap along while they play, then let them lead when they are ready.
Start with a beat the child can feel
A steady beat is the regular pulse beneath a song or chant. Before adding notes or worrying about accurate playing, help your child experience that pulse through speech and movement. This movement-first sequence fits the Orff Schulwerk approach, which brings together singing, games, percussion, imitation, and movement. The Alberta Chapter of Carl Orff Canada describes children as experiencing and making rhythms before being expected to read or write music: Carl Orff Canada, Alberta Chapter.
Choose a familiar song, chant, or short repeated phrase. Sing or speak it together, then walk, clap, or pat your knees at a comfortable, regular pace. The words can change rhythm while the underlying pulse stays steady. Let your child copy your movement before asking them to keep the beat alone.
Move the same pulse onto the xylophone
Once your child can follow the pulse with movement, try a very simple xylophone pattern. Keep the beat audible but quiet: you can pat your knee or clap gently as they play. At first, focus on staying with that pulse rather than playing a complicated rhythm or getting every note right.

- Move to a steady pulse. Walk, clap, or pat your knees while you continue singing or speaking.
- Invite imitation. Let your child copy your steps, claps, or pats.
- Try a simple xylophone pattern. Keep the same pulse going with a quiet pat or clap while your child plays.
- Switch who leads. Your child can lead the movement or mark the pulse while you follow.
- Add variety gradually. Introduce a new rhythm or variation after your child can stay with the underlying pulse.
This is a practical progression, not a fixed lesson plan. Teacher-authored examples support the use of song, movement, body percussion, imitation, and a leader-marked beat: Meredith Johnson’s steady-beat lesson and Mary Knysh’s “Welcome Walk” activity. When your child rushes or loses the beat
Pause without treating it as a failure. Go back briefly to walking or patting the beat together, then try again with a simpler xylophone pattern. You can keep marking the pulse while your child plays, or switch roles so your child leads and you imitate. The aim is to make the pulse easier to follow, not to push through a pattern that is currently too difficult.

Keep practice flexible
Use a pace your child can move to comfortably and change the activity if attention or coordination starts to fade. The cited teaching guidance does not prescribe a universal tempo or a fixed number of practice minutes. It also does not establish one ideal xylophone, age threshold, or practice method for every child. These sources describe teaching approaches and activities, rather than controlled studies comparing xylophone practice methods.
