Addressable RGB LEDs combine red, green and blue emitters with a control chip in each pixel. A controller sends digital color and brightness data through a chain, allowing pixels to show different colors without a separate controller for every LED. WS2812B and SK6812 pixels generally use one data wire; APA102 pixels use separate data and clock wires. The right choice depends on whether you need RGB or RGBW, which interface your controller supports, and the strip’s voltage and physical specifications.
What integrated-control LEDs are and how they work
An integrated-control pixel packages its emitters and driver IC together. Worldsemi describes the WS2812B as a control circuit and RGB chip integrated in a 5050 package to form an addressable pixel. A controller sends digital data specifying color and brightness; pixels use that data to set their output, and the signal can continue down a chain. The WS2812B includes signal reshaping to help pass the signal along. This arrangement lets a controller address many pixels in sequence rather than requiring a separate controller for each one.
For WS2812B, Worldsemi specifies a single-line, 800 Kbps data stream and 256 brightness levels for each of the red, green and blue channels. Those three channel values permit 16,777,216 possible RGB color combinations. The figure describes the chip’s channel levels and combinations, not a guarantee that every strip will reproduce every color identically.

RGB strips make white by mixing red, green and blue. An RGBW strip adds a dedicated white emitter and channel, which can produce white without relying solely on an RGB mix. Confirm that the controller and software configuration support the strip’s extra channel before choosing RGBW.

Do you need a separate controller for every LED?
No. With an addressable strip, one compatible controller can send data to a chain of pixels, each of which has its own integrated driver. The controller still needs to match the strip’s interface: a one-wire family such as WS2812B or SK6812 uses a data connection, while APA102 uses data and clock. The strip also needs a suitable power supply; the data connection does not remove the need to supply power to the LEDs.
Individual addressability is not the same as unlimited chain length or guaranteed refresh performance. For the WS2812B-2020 device variant, Worldsemi reports at least 1,024 cascaded pixels at a 30 fps refresh rate, along with a 2 kHz scan frequency and 12 mA operating current per channel. Those are variant-level device specifications, not promises for every strip assembly or installation.

What strip formats look like in practice
Product assemblies vary in length and pixel density even when they use similar LED families. For example, Pololu lists a 0.5 m, 5 V WS2812B strip with 72 individually addressable RGB LEDs and a 2 m, 5 V SK6812 strip with 120 individually addressable RGB LEDs. Both examples can be chained and cut between LEDs. These are specific product examples, not standard lengths or densities for either family.

How to choose a strip
- Match voltage and plan power delivery. Use the strip’s rated supply voltage and size wiring and power injection for the total load. Do not infer whole-strip power from the LED package alone.
- Check actual pixel density and cut spacing. More pixels per metre can give finer visual resolution, but also increase current demand and the amount of pixel data to send. Verify the seller’s stated density and cut interval for the exact assembly.
- Choose RGB or RGBW for the light you need. RGB mixes its three channels to make white; RGBW adds a dedicated white emitter. Verify that the controller supports the strip’s channel arrangement.
- Match the data interface. One-wire LEDs require suitable timing and signal levels. APA102-style strips need both data and clock connections.
- Check the assembled strip’s physical rating. Confirm its IP rating, coating, connector and mechanical bend radius for the installation. These properties are not established by a bare LED chip’s datasheet.
- Confirm software and controller compatibility. Do not assume support from the family name alone; check the current documentation for the exact type and configuration.
Which addressable LED strips work with WLED?
WLED’s repository lists support for major families including WS2812B, WS2811, WS2815, SK6812, WS2805, TM1914, APA102, WS2801 and LPD8806, as well as RGBW and RGB+CCT strips. Its compatibility documentation records details such as family-specific voltage, color order and grouping. Because support and configuration can vary by type, consult the current WLED repository and WLED compatibility documentation before wiring or configuring a particular strip. The links are named here because the source material identifies those pages but does not provide their URLs.

In practical terms, WS2812B and SK6812 are candidates when your controller supports one-wire pixels; select an RGBW SK6812 version when you need the dedicated white channel. APA102 is an option when you want a clocked data interface and your controller can provide both signals. In every case, verify the exact strip variant, voltage, channel arrangement and WLED configuration rather than relying only on the family label.
