What was the SEZ Spin-Processor 8200?
The 8200 was a semiconductor wafer-cleaning tool announced by SEZ in 2000. EE Times reported that the four-chamber system was intended for pre-diffusion cleaning and could process both wafer surfaces. It was a production-fab tool, not a consumer device.
SEZ presented the design as combining strengths usually associated with two tool approaches. Single-wafer processing was meant to provide better process uniformity and reduce cross-contamination; the company also aimed for throughput and materials-use efficiency associated with batch processing. The announcement further cited hydrophilic or hydrophobic surface termination without water marks as a target capability.
How did it clean the front and back?
The announcement identifies the 8200 as a spin processor and says it cleaned both sides, but it does not explain the exact wafer-handling sequence, chemistry delivery arrangement, or which chamber performed each part of the process. It would therefore be misleading to infer that all four chambers had identical functions or that the front and back were necessarily cleaned at precisely the same time.

Related SEZ America material describes a broader single-wafer spin-process platform with process temperatures up to 85 °C, DI-ozone processing, SMIF load ports, endpoint detection, buffering systems, and pin or pinless chucks. It also says available options and chemistry formulas supported front-end and back-end fab processes. The listing does not establish that every feature was standard on the 8200 specifically.
Why clean the wafer backside?
Wafer cleaning is not only about the surface where device structures are formed. The 8200 announcement targeted both surfaces in a pre-diffusion process, while a published study by STMicroelectronics, SEZ AG, and CEA-LETI examined backside removal of metallic and other contaminants from silicon, silicon nitride, and silicon oxide. Together, these sources show that backside cleanliness was a process-control concern, not merely cosmetic wafer preparation.

The study used an SEZ single-wafer spin processor and evaluated a mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, and hydrofluoric acid (H2O:H2O2:H2SO4:HF) to balance contaminant removal against etch rate and silicon roughening. That is historical research context, not an operating recipe: wet-process chemistry requires qualified equipment, process controls, and appropriate safety procedures.
Did the 8200 reach production, and can fabs buy one now?
EE Times reported on February 5, 2000, that feasibility work and alpha testing had been completed and that production-worthy shipments were planned to begin in Q1 2001. This establishes what SEZ planned at the time, not whether shipments actually began, how many systems were installed, or whether the original model remains supported or for sale. No authoritative current information establishes that the SEZ 8200 is still commercially available.

For a present-day equipment search, buyers should compare current systems by process step, substrate size and material, whether front- and backside cleaning is simultaneous or sequential, chemistry and temperature controls, chamber configuration, exhaust handling, reclaim options, and factory communications. Published vendor pages describe configured industrial systems; they do not establish ordinary retail availability.

Current vendor documentation offers comparison points, not evidence that either system is a direct replacement for the historical 8200.

What the historical announcement does—and does not—tell us
- Established: SEZ announced a four-chamber single-wafer tool for front- and backside cleaning, with pre-diffusion work as its target, on February 5, 2000.
- Planned at the time: production-worthy shipments were expected to begin in Q1 2001.
- Not established by that announcement: actual shipment dates or volumes, present-day support, current availability, exact chamber roles, or detailed 8200 process recipes.
