Intel Agilex is a family of programmable FPGAs and systems-on-chip designed for workloads ranging from embedded and industrial systems to data-center acceleration. The clearest CXL example is Agilex 7 I-Series: Intel documents PCIe 5.0 x16 and CXL support for this line, allowing a compatible FPGA accelerator to connect to a host CPU with a cache- and memory-coherent interface. CXL support and feature levels vary by product, so it should not be assumed across every Agilex device.

What is an Intel Agilex FPGA?

An FPGA is a programmable chip whose logic can be configured for a particular task. Unlike a fixed-function processor, it can be tailored to accelerate selected algorithms or implement specialized interfaces. Agilex is Intel’s family name for FPGAs and SoCs that combine programmable fabric with options such as high-speed transceivers, PCIe, Arm-based processors, CXL, and—in documented Agilex 7 materials—up to 32 GB of HBM2e memory.

Not every part includes every feature. The exact mix depends on the Agilex series and device, so selection requires checking the specific part’s interface, memory, transceiver, power, and package details rather than relying on the family name alone.

What does CXL add to an Agilex system?

Compute Express Link (CXL) is a high-bandwidth, low-latency connection between a host CPU and an attached device such as an FPGA accelerator. Intel describes it as a cache- and memory-coherent interface: the CPU and device can maintain coherence between the CPU memory space and memory on attached devices. That can make shared-data accelerator designs easier to integrate than designs that rely on separate, explicitly managed memory copies.

For a data-center system, the practical point is not simply that the FPGA has a fast connection. CXL can support resource sharing between the host and accelerator and may reduce software-stack complexity for workloads that benefit from coherent access. It does not make every application faster automatically: developers still need to design the hardware and software around the workload, memory behavior, and supported CXL features.

Which Agilex FPGA is the clearest fit for CXL and data-center use?

Agilex 7 I-Series

Intel’s Agilex 7 I-Series is its most explicit example for CXL-connected acceleration. Intel lists PCIe 5.0 x16, CXL support, and transceivers up to 116 Gbps, and positions the R-Tile connectivity chiplet for data-center and high-performance-computing workloads. Intel’s product information describes CXL 1.1 support with some CXL 2.0 features; that wording matters because it is not a blanket statement that every I-Series configuration implements every CXL 2.0 capability.

  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, USB-UART Bridge
  • 4 Switches, 4 Buttons, 1 Reset Button, 4 LEDs, 4 RGB LEDs, 4 Pmod connectors, shield connector

R-Tile and CXL feature level

R-Tile provides PCIe and CXL connectivity. Intel says CXL IP with 2.0 features began shipping in volume in R-Tile-equipped Agilex 7 products. That statement is about the IP and product shipments; it should not be read as proof that all Agilex devices, configurations, or systems support the same CXL feature set. Confirm the device documentation and host-platform requirements for a planned design.

Can an Agilex FPGA connect to an Intel Xeon server with CXL?

Intel positions Agilex 7 I-Series for accelerator use with Xeon-based systems, and documents PCIe 5.0 x16 and CXL on the I-Series. A compatible FPGA card and server can therefore be designed as a host-and-accelerator system, subject to the precise CXL generation and features supported by both ends, as well as board, firmware, and software requirements. The family-level label alone is not enough to establish compatibility for a particular Xeon platform.

Altera Cyclone IV FPGA Development Board - DueProLogic
  • Altera Cyclone IV FPGA includes 6,000 Logic Elements with two clock multipliers. The Cyclone IV FPGA is the perfect balance of inexpensive cost versus plentiful logic cells, 20KBytes of SRAM, and General Purpose Input/Output pins. This is a great board to learn how to program FPGA's.
  • Built in programmer cable allows configuring the FPGA with a single USB-C cable. The DPL can be powered from the USB cable or from the Barrel Connector. A separate JTAG header can also be used to program the FPGA using a compatible USB Blaster cable.
  • 6x6 LED Array allows character and animations to be displayed at ultra fast speed. LED blocks can be individually turned on/off to allow LED signals to be used as I/O's
  • 70 Inputs/Outputs originating at the FPGA are available at Stackable Headers organized around the edge of the board. The user can configure these I/O's using the FPGA project code.
  • The DPL contains two oscillators, 66MHz and 100MHz. The 66MHz oscillator is used to provide clocking for the EPT ActiveHost USB communications core. The 100MHz oscillator can be used by the user clocked up using one of the onboard Clock-DLL modules.

Agilex can also be used as a discrete accelerator, IPU, SmartNIC, or infrastructure-processing element attached through PCIe or CXL. These roles offload selected algorithms or networking and infrastructure tasks from the CPU; they are different system designs, not automatic modes enabled merely by installing an FPGA.

Where does Agilex fit: embedded edge or data center?

Embedded and edge systems

Intel has described Agilex use in edge analytics and virtualized network functions, and its portfolio materials also identify embedded, industrial, automotive, communications, test, medical, broadcast, and defense markets. These applications can benefit from configurable logic, high-speed I/O, and the ability to tailor hardware behavior to a product’s needs. Whether a particular device meets an embedded system’s power, latency, lifecycle, and environmental requirements depends on the implementation and product variant.

Data-center and HPC systems

In servers, Agilex can accelerate selected compute tasks or handle infrastructure functions as an accelerator, IPU, or SmartNIC. PCIe 5.0 and CXL are relevant where high-throughput host connectivity or coherent access is important. The right choice depends on the workload’s data movement, memory needs, host compatibility, and software flow—not just peak interface rates.

How should Intel’s Agilex performance figures be read?

Intel has published comparative performance claims, but these are vendor claims rather than independent benchmarks. Intel’s Agilex product brief states approximately 2× better fabric performance per watt than competing 7 nm FPGAs. Intel’s Agilex 7 I-Series product page claims 4× higher CXL bandwidth per port than other FPGA CXL implementations; an Intel portfolio announcement also describes 2× faster PCIe 5.0 bandwidth and 4× higher CXL bandwidth per port. These comparisons are tied to Intel’s stated configurations and test dates, and Intel cautions that performance varies by use and configuration. They should not be treated as universal results for every device or workload.

What can you build with an Agilex development kit?

A development kit is useful for prototyping a system around a specific FPGA, interface, or application. Depending on the chosen board and its exposed interfaces, a project might explore an accelerator datapath, a network or infrastructure function, a high-speed interface, or an embedded control and analytics design. For CXL work, verify that the exact kit or card exposes the required CXL-capable device and can be used with a compatible host; a generic FPGA board is not necessarily a CXL development platform.

Intel’s Agilex design hub organizes design work across system architecture, board design, interface design, application design, software development, AI design, and oneAPI FPGA paths. Intel’s portfolio announcement names BittWare, Hitek Systems, and SigmaX among partners offering Open FPGA Stack-based platform and application offerings. Kit availability and compatibility are product-specific; confirm current documentation and vendor listings before basing a design on a particular board.
