To stop iCloud Drive using mobile data on an iPhone or cellular iPad, open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions), find Files or iCloud Drive, and turn off its cellular-data switch if shown. That blocks carrier data for the service while leaving iCloud Drive enabled for Wi-Fi syncing. Apple explains that when a service’s cellular setting is off, iPhone uses Wi-Fi only: View or change cellular data settings on iPhone.
How to make iCloud Drive Wi-Fi-only on iPhone or iPad
- Check that iCloud Drive is enabled: Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive and confirm Sync this iPhone or Sync this iPad is on. The wording may vary by device and software release.
- Open cellular settings: Go to Settings > Cellular, or Settings > Mobile Service in some regions.
- Find the relevant entry: Scroll the app and service list for Files or iCloud Drive. Turn off its cellular-data switch when available.
- Check the result: iCloud Drive should continue syncing over Wi-Fi, but the selected service should no longer use cellular data. You can review per-app usage under Settings > Cellular.
The exact entry can depend on the iOS or iPadOS version. If neither Files nor iCloud Drive appears, avoid turning off iCloud Drive itself unless you intend to stop that device’s participation in syncing; consult the Apple user guide for your installed version.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop

To disable syncing on a device, use Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive > Sync this iPhone/iPad. To change an app’s iCloud access, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All and switch off that app. Those controls have a wider effect than simply preventing cellular transfers.
What to do if iCloud Drive works on Wi-Fi but not cellular
- Check that iCloud Drive is enabled on the device and that it is signed in to the Apple Account you expect.
- Look for a Files or iCloud Drive cellular switch in Settings. If it is off, Wi-Fi-only behavior is expected.
- Check iCloud storage. Apple’s current iPhone User Guide states that iCloud includes 5 GB of free storage; a full account can prevent uploads even when network access is available.
- Review cellular usage in Settings > Cellular. The page provides per-app usage totals and a control to reset statistics.
- Test on a known-good Wi-Fi network if cellular access is blocked. Sync timing depends on network conditions and workload; Apple does not specify a universal cellular sync delay or typical cellular-data consumption for iCloud Drive.
Manage iCloud Drive on Mac and Windows
Mac
The iPhone Cellular or Mobile Service app list does not apply to a Mac. To enable or disable participation, open Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive and use Sync this Mac. Apple’s Optimize Mac Storage option can keep files in iCloud and remove local copies when space is needed, so cloud availability and whether a file is downloaded locally are separate considerations.

Windows
Enable iCloud Drive in iCloud for Windows after setting up iCloud Drive on an Apple device. You can also access files at iCloud.com. The iPhone cellular-per-service switch is not a Windows setting.
