Yes—but a smartphone becomes a universal remote only for devices it can communicate with. A Wi-Fi remote app can control compatible smart TVs and streamers without an infrared blaster. To operate older infrared-only equipment, an iPhone or iPad needs an external IR transmitter or a network-connected IR adapter; iOS devices cannot emit infrared on their own.
What “TeleTouch” means—and what it does not confirm
“TeleTouch: Turn your smartphone into a truly universal remote control” is the title of an ExtremeTech article recorded in a 2012 bibliography by the International Science Community Association. The original ExtremeTech page was not accessible, so its specific product, features and instructions cannot be confirmed. The name in that title should not be taken as evidence that a current app called TeleTouch is available or works with particular equipment.
The underlying idea is still practical: one phone interface can bring together compatible networked TVs, streamers, computers and A/V equipment. How much it can control depends on each device’s connection, any required bridge hardware, and the app’s supported features.
Choose the control route that fits your equipment
For a smart TV or streamer: Wi-Fi or IP
A Wi-Fi remote app communicates with supported devices over a network rather than sending the same infrared signals as a traditional remote. For example, TempTom’s Google Play listing describes TelePad as a Wi-Fi remote for Android TV, Fire TV and smart TVs. Its listed functions include touchpad navigation, launching TV apps, casting local photos and video, and controls such as power, volume, channel, mute, menu, back and home. The listing claims support for Samsung, LG, Roku, Sony, Fire TV, Vizio, TCL, Hisense and other brands; compatibility for a specific model is not established merely by a brand appearing on that list.

For older infrared equipment: add a transmitter
Touch App Technologies, the developer of TouchControl, explicitly says that the app “will not turn your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch into an infrared remote control by itself, as iOS devices do not have built-in IR capabilities.” Controlling an infrared-only TV or receiver therefore requires external IR hardware. For TouchControl, the developer documents Global Caché iTach, Flex and GC-100 products as network bridges and says its software can use their IR, serial and related interfaces.
For a mixed setup: combine supported network and hardware connections
A configurable remote can combine devices reachable over a network with equipment reached through a compatible adapter. That can make one phone screen useful for more than one TV, but “universal” does not mean every device is automatically supported. Confirm that the app and any required hardware support the connection and equipment you intend to use.

What TouchControl costs and what its listing shows
The Apple App Store listing showed TouchControl at $5.99 in the current capture; the capture does not specify a region, and the price should not be assumed to be identical in every store. The listing showed a 4.3 out of 5 rating from 39 ratings. Its version history lists version 13.3 dated December 22, 2025, and version 13 dated October 15, 2025. Ratings and version history describe that listing, not a guarantee of compatibility with a particular device.

Set up a phone remote for legacy IR gear
- Check the device’s control method. If the TV, receiver or other component relies on infrared, an iPhone or iPad alone cannot send its commands.
- Choose an app and a compatible bridge. For TouchControl, the developer names Global Caché iTach, Flex and GC-100 products. Check that the specific adapter and connection type suit the equipment you want to control.
- Design the remote screen. TouchControl’s App Store listing says to use its free Mac or Windows server software to design remote screens.
- Connect the app to the supported equipment. TouchControl’s documented options include IR, serial and related interfaces through the named hardware. Exact device-specific configuration steps are not stated in the available product information.
- Decide whether the computer server must stay on. Touch App Technologies says the server need not run continuously for network-attached devices. It is needed for design/configuration and PC-specific functions such as desktop commands, mouse and keyboard control, and screen capture.
Which option makes sense for your setup?
- Only need basic control of a compatible smart TV or streamer? Try a Wi-Fi remote such as TelePad if the specific device is supported; an IR bridge is not part of the Wi-Fi approach described in its listing.
- Need to control an older infrared TV or receiver from an iPhone or iPad? Plan on external IR hardware, such as a network adapter documented for the remote app you choose.
- Want custom screens or a mix of PCs, A/V equipment and network devices? TouchControl is the more configurable example here, but setup involves screen design software and may involve bridge hardware.
- Expect one app to work with every brand and model? Check model-level compatibility and connection requirements first. A broad brand list or the word “universal” does not establish support for every device.
