Amazon Zocalo was AWS’s managed enterprise file-sharing and document-review service, announced on July 10, 2014. It combined cloud storage and device synchronization with feedback tools and administrative controls. Its launch prices and features are historical; they should not be treated as current AWS offerings.
What was Amazon Zocalo?
AWS described Zocalo at launch as “a fully managed, secure enterprise storage and sharing service with strong administrative controls and feedback capabilities.” It was aimed at organizations that needed employees to share work documents and coordinate reviews, rather than simply store personal files.
Zocalo supported documents, spreadsheets, presentations, webpages, images, PDFs, and text files. Users could share files, synchronize them across devices, request feedback, and follow review activity from a central hub showing files they owned and files under review.
How did Zocalo’s document-review workflow work?
Reviewers could comment on a file and highlight specific words, sentences, paragraphs, or areas of a document. Email notifications covered review activity and deadlines, helping teams track requested feedback without relying solely on separate email threads.

AWS positioned this as a response to the cost and complexity of existing enterprise tools. Which devices and workplace systems did it support?
The July 2014 launch announcement listed laptops, iPad, Kindle Fire, and Android tablets. Zocalo also integrated with Amazon WorkSpaces, AWS’s virtual desktop service. AWS said WorkSpaces customers received Zocalo at no charge for up to 50 GB of storage.

Organizations could connect an existing Microsoft Active Directory, allowing users to continue signing in with enterprise credentials. This mattered for businesses seeking to add file sharing without creating a separate identity system for employees.
What security and administrative controls did AWS announce?
At launch, AWS said Zocalo data was encrypted in transit and at rest. Administrators could set sharing policies, choose the AWS Region where data was stored, and view audit logs of file and user activity. Those controls addressed common enterprise concerns about access, location, and traceability.

Was Zocalo included with AWS, and did it replace Dropbox or Box?

The announcement framed Zocalo as an enterprise document-sharing and collaboration service. It does not establish that Zocalo replaced Dropbox, Box, or another provider, nor does it provide a direct feature or price comparison. A meaningful comparison would need to examine each service’s price and storage, identity integration, sharing controls, auditability, data-region options, review workflow, device support, and virtual-desktop integration using current product terms.

AWS’s historical launch name was Amazon Zocalo. The current availability, successor status, and pricing of Zocalo or Amazon WorkDocs are not established by the 2014 announcement. A WorkDocs URL redirecting to the general AWS homepage is not, by itself, proof that the service was discontinued, replaced, or unavailable in a particular Region.
Organizations evaluating the service should verify its listing and pricing in the live AWS catalog for their Region rather than relying on launch-era terms. The launch announcement documents what AWS offered in July 2014, but it cannot settle current orderability.
