Clean the parts that touch coffee and milk separately, then descale the internal water circuit only when your machine prompts you or its manual says to. Follow the exact model’s instructions for products, intervals, and rinse steps: one cleaning cycle does not maintain every part, and there is no universal descaling schedule for bean-to-cup machines.
What needs cleaning—and why one cycle is not enough
A bean-to-cup machine has several distinct maintenance tasks. Grounds and coffee oils collect around the brew group and grounds container; milk residue remains in the milk path; water leaves scale inside the circuit. A machine’s coffee-cleaning program may address only some of these areas. Check the manual for which parts are cleaned automatically and which need to be removed, rinsed, or washed by hand.
- Removable parts: drip tray, grounds container, water tank, and any removable brew group or milk components.
- Milk path: rinse or run the machine’s prescribed milk-cleaning program after milk drinks, then clean removable parts as directed.
- Internal water circuit: descale using the model’s specified product and complete its full guided cycle, including the fresh-water rinse.
After use and daily cleaning
Empty the drip tray and grounds container
Empty the drip tray daily or when its indicator shows it is full, and empty the grounds container when prompted. Philips gives these directions for the models covered by its cleaning and maintenance instructions; check your own manual for the exact indicator and schedule.
Clean the milk system after milk drinks
Run the machine’s post-drink rinse or cleaning prompt and wash or rinse removable milk parts as the manual specifies. Philips says a cleaning icon appears after brewing on most of its espresso machines. For the milk-carafe configuration it describes, the daily care includes rinsing the tube and the top of the carafe. JURA recommends daily milk cleaning for the IMPRESSA X9 when it is used to make milk beverages; that recommendation is specific to that model.

Wipe the exterior
Wipe spills and the machine’s exterior with a soft, damp cloth. This is housekeeping, not a replacement for cleaning the brew group, milk path, or internal water circuit.
Weekly and periodic cleaning of removable parts
Rinse the brew group, if your model has a removable one
For the Philips models covered by its support instructions, Philips says to rinse the brew group weekly with lukewarm water. Remove it only as the manual explains, and do not assume every bean-to-cup machine has a user-removable brew group.

Wash the grounds container and water tank
Philips also directs owners of the listed models to clean the grounds container weekly and clean or rinse the water tank weekly. Let parts dry as the manual directs before reinstalling them.
Disassemble and wash the milk carafe when instructed
For the Philips milk-carafe configuration described in its guidance, disassemble the carafe weekly and wash its parts in lukewarm water. Removal and washing instructions vary by milk-system design, so follow the instructions for your exact machine. Do not use abrasive tools or immerse electrical components; confirm which parts are safe to remove and wash.

Monthly and less frequent care
Intervals and consumables below are specific to Philips models covered by its support page, not a schedule for every brand:
- Monthly brew-group cleaning: Philips specifies Coffee Oil Remover tablets CA6704 for the brew-group filter on covered models.
- Monthly milk-circuit cleaning: Philips specifies milk circuit cleaner CA6705 for the classic milk frother and milk-carafe configurations described.
- Lubrication every two months: Philips recommends lubricating the brew group, applying a thin layer at the piston, shaft, and rails as described in its instructions. Use the lubricant and locations specified for your model.
See Philips’ model-specific cleaning guidance and your machine’s manual before using a cleaning product or lubricant.

How to descale a bean-to-cup machine
Start when the display prompts you or when the model’s manual directs. Water hardness and water filters can affect how often descaling is needed. De’Longhi recommends descaling its pump espresso machines after 200 uses while noting that frequency depends on local water hardness; that figure is not a general interval for bean-to-cup machines.
- Check the exact model’s instructions. Find the descaling procedure and the approved descaler, fill level, outlet setup, and any parts that must be removed. Do not substitute a generic recipe.
- Prepare the machine as prompted. For the Philips procedures reviewed, remove the milk attachment where applicable and remove the AquaClean filter before descaling. Philips says the filter reduces the need for descaling on applicable machines; follow the model’s directions for when to refit or replace it.
- Use the specified descaler and amount. Add the product and water to the level stated in the manual or displayed by the machine. Product cautions can be model-specific: Philips warns against certain acids for its covered 5000-series procedure, as detailed below.
- Place a large enough vessel under the specified outlets. Run the full guided program. Let the tank empty if the procedure expects it to; do not refill early unless the machine instructs you to. JURA warns that premature refilling or excess liquid can leave the IMPRESSA X9 descaling prompt active.
- Complete the fresh-water rinse. Rinse the tank and run the prompted rinse cycle to completion. Refit or replace a filter, and clean the brew group or milk components afterward only when the manual directs.
Philips’ procedure for the 4300, 4400, 5400, and 5500 series is estimated at about 30 minutes, including descaling and rinsing. Its Canadian support page provides separate procedures by machine family: Philips’ descaling instructions.

Can you use vinegar to descale it?
Do not assume vinegar is suitable. Use only a descaler approved for your exact machine and follow its manual. Philips explicitly says that, for its covered 5000-series procedure, owners should use Philips descaler and not products containing sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic, or acetic acid (vinegar), warning that these can damage the machine and void the warranty. This is a Philips instruction for the specified series, not a universal statement about every manufacturer. Check the product restrictions for your own model before descaling.
How often should you descale?
There is no single interval established for all bean-to-cup machines. Use the machine’s prompt or the interval in its manual; water hardness and filtration affect the schedule. Manufacturer figures illustrate why an interval should not be generalized: De’Longhi’s after-200-uses recommendation concerns pump espresso machines and varies with water hardness. JURA’s IMPRESSA X9 documentation gives a coffee-cleaning prompt after 220 draw-off operations or 80 switch-on rinses; that is a coffee-cleaning threshold for that named model, not a universal descaling interval. For the relevant Philips machines, the AquaClean filter reduces the need for descaling, and Philips provides series-specific descaling procedures.
Model-specific timings are not universal schedules
The examples below are manufacturer instructions for named machines or model groups, accessed in 2026. They show why prompts, intervals, and program durations should be treated as model-specific.
| Manufacturer and model or category | Maintenance figure | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Philips, models covered by its cleaning guidance | Weekly brew-group rinse; monthly CA6704 tablet use; lubrication every two months | Philips’ listed models and configurations; check the support page and manual for model coverage. |
| Philips 4300, 4400, 5400, and 5500 series | About 30 minutes | Estimated time for the Philips descaling procedure, including descaling and rinsing. |
| JURA IMPRESSA X9 | Coffee cleaning after 220 draw-off operations or 80 switch-on rinses; about 15 minutes | Model-specific coffee-cleaning prompt and program, not a universal descaling interval. |
| JURA IMPRESSA X9 | About 2 minutes | Model-specific milk-cleaning program. |
| De’Longhi pump espresso machines | Descale after 200 uses | De’Longhi’s recommendation for its pump espresso category; the company says frequency depends on local water hardness. Not a bean-to-cup rule. |
