A factory task is ready for humanoid robot automation only when a specific robot configuration can perform that task safely, reliably, and economically in its actual workcell. A humanoid demonstration—or a robot’s general capability claim—is not enough. Define the job, identify the capabilities and safeguards it requires, then test the integrated system against acceptance criteria set before a representative pilot.

Start with the task, not the robot

Readiness belongs to a particular task, workcell, robot configuration, and operating context. Begin by documenting the operation and why you want to automate it: for example, to improve ergonomics, address labor availability, increase quality or throughput, or handle product changes more flexibly. State the objective in a form that can be measured.

Describe the job from its start state to its required end state. Include part variants, expected cycle or takt time, shifts, changeovers, space constraints, and where people enter or work near the area. Record normal operating conditions and the variations and exceptions the robot must handle. NIST’s task-based performance assessment framework emphasizes decomposing a task and deriving requirements from it, rather than inferring application readiness from isolated component claims: NIST’s performance assessment framework.

Translate the job into capabilities to verify

For each subtask, specify what evidence would demonstrate that the complete system can do it in the real environment. The capabilities below are questions for the evaluation—not assumptions that a humanoid already meets them.

  • Perception: Can it identify and track the parts, fixtures, people, and machine states it needs to recognize amid the actual lighting, clutter, and occlusion?
  • Mobility and reach: Can it reach every work area and, if mobile, traverse the real floor and thresholds without losing stability or obstructing people and material flows?
  • Manipulation: Can it grasp and orient the actual parts with the required force and precision, tolerate expected variation, and verify placement or task completion?
  • Tool and process interaction: Can it operate the necessary tools, controls, doors, handles, buttons, or connectors? Would a dedicated fixture make the job more dependable?
  • State changes and recovery: Can it respond to expected changes and recover safely from a failed pick, misfeed, jam, part variation, or machine interruption? What is the human fallback?
  • System integration: Do the robot and workcell connect correctly to the machine, PLC or production system, safety functions, network, work instructions, and maintenance workflow?

NIST identifies perception, mobility, dexterity, and safety as component areas for task-derived evaluation. Fraunhofer IPA’s Humanoid Capabilities Navigator organizes assessment around mobility, manipulation, cognition, and safety/security, and classifies robots and applications across five maturity levels. These frameworks help structure questions; they do not certify a particular workcell as ready. See NIST’s framework and Fraunhofer IPA’s humanoid assessment release.

Screen for fit and compare alternatives

A bounded, repetitive task with stable inputs and a clear success condition is often easier to specify and evaluate than one with many unstructured variants. Use that as a screening heuristic, not a guarantee. Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 hardware value-chain paper says current humanoid systems do not offer unrestricted autonomy across heterogeneous industrial environments. It identifies material transport, machine loading, and grasping complex objects as possible early application areas—not as automatic recommendations for every factory: Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 hardware value-chain paper.

Ask what advantage the humanoid’s form provides over a fixed industrial arm, cobot, mobile manipulator, purpose-built fixture, or process redesign. Evaluate feasible alternatives against the same task requirements and acceptance criteria. Human-robot collaboration safety measures can affect cycle time, flexibility, and investment choices, so include those effects in the comparison: Fraunhofer IPA’s human-robot collaboration material.

Make safety and integration a gate

Complete a risk assessment for the defined application before workers are exposed to the system. Assess the integrated setup: robot, hands or gripper, carried tool, part, workpiece, fixtures, protective measures, human locations and behavior, foreseeable contact, and abnormal or fault conditions. NIST’s task-based human-robot collaboration work describes offline risk assessment during early design and considers tooling, the nature and duration of expected contact, and how force could transfer to an operator: NIST’s task-based risk assessment material.

Distinguish the robot as a machine from the integrated robot system. ISO 10218-1:2025 addresses industrial robots as machines; ISO 10218-2 concerns robot systems and integration. Check the applicable edition, adoption, and jurisdiction for your deployment. OSHA’s robotics page, accessed October 3, 2026, says there are no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry and points to relevant consensus standards and task-based assessment material. That does not remove workplace safety duties; applicable requirements depend on the jurisdiction and application: OSHA’s robotics page.

For close human interaction, validate the actual safety functions and foreseeable contact conditions rather than relying on a vendor’s description of a robot as collaborative. Fraunhofer IPA’s humanoid benchmark includes checks for stability, collision-force limitation, obstacle detection, and behavior on failure: Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark overview.

Set the pilot protocol before testing

Write down the exact configuration and test conditions so the results have a clear scope. Record the hardware, end effector, software and firmware versions, payload, workpiece and fixture variants, environment, operating duration, number of repetitions, fault conditions, and whether people are present. Define how you will log failures and interventions. Tie every result to that configuration; hardware, tooling, or software changes may require appropriate re-evaluation.

Set acceptance limits before the pilot begins. These are local criteria derived from your production baseline and requirements; NIST’s task-derived measures and Fraunhofer IPA’s modular benchmark do not prescribe universal pass thresholds. The benchmark’s six assessment areas are technologies and basic capabilities, complex capabilities, cleanroom suitability, functional safety, cybersecurity, and energy efficiency: Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark overview.

Read results in context and choose an outcome

Compare observed performance with the limits you set, the current process, and feasible automation alternatives. Document run-to-run variation, unresolved failure modes, and the conditions under which results hold. Build the operational and cost comparison around the whole deployment: integration and safety engineering, tooling, facility changes, operator support, charging, maintenance, training, and downtime.

The reviewed frameworks do not establish a universal ROI, uptime, or cycle-time threshold that makes every task ready. Decide from your baseline and requirements. A practical decision can be to proceed to a limited production deployment, revise the task or workcell and retest, select another automation approach, or defer while a capability, safety, reliability, or cost requirement remains unmet. Keep a human fallback and production recovery plan while evidence is limited.

Use published robot results carefully

Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 benchmark illustrates why evidence must stay attached to the configuration and test conditions that produced it. In its published example, the institute tested a Unitree G1 EDU-4 with Dex3-1 three-finger hands, delivered in May 2025, on firmware 1.04. It reported collision forces above 500 N, a Bluetooth vulnerability in the tested software that had since been fixed, and maximum battery durations of 2 hours 49 minutes while standing and 1 hour 49 minutes in a standing-and-walking scenario: Fraunhofer IPA’s May 27, 2026 release.

Those are results for that tested configuration and setup, not current specifications for every G1, software version, or humanoid robot. The example shows why safety, energy, security, and task performance need separate evidence: strength in one dimension does not establish suitability for a specific factory task.
