Dutch police seized 127 servers associated with Zservers and XHost at an Amsterdam data center on 12 February 2025. The action disrupted infrastructure that authorities linked to cybercrime, including ransomware operations—but the available reporting does not show that Zservers was permanently shut down or that ransomware activity fell for good.
What happened to Zservers?
After investigating the hosting provider for about a year, Dutch police seized 127 servers associated with Zservers/XHost in Amsterdam on 12 February 2025, according to The Record. The servers were taken offline, making the seizure a direct intervention against specified infrastructure rather than simply a warning or financial penalty.
The operation followed sanctions announced on 11 February by the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. Those governments targeted Zservers and associated people; the sanctions and the Dutch server seizure were separate actions, taken by different authorities and using different powers.
How did the sanctions differ from the server seizure?
| Action | When and where | Mechanism | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanctions | Announced 11 February 2025 by the United States, United Kingdom and Australia | Restrictions on dealings with designated entities and individuals | The governments designated Zservers and associated people. See the U.S. Treasury announcement and UK government announcement. |
| Server seizure | 12 February 2025, Amsterdam, Netherlands | Dutch police physically seized 127 servers associated with Zservers/XHost | The Record reported the seizure figure attributed to Dutch police; the reporting establishes that specified infrastructure was taken offline, not the lasting effect on the service or ransomware activity. |
In practical terms, sanctions constrain transactions and dealings involving designated targets. A physical seizure removes the specified hardware from operation. Neither action, by itself, proves that every related system or service has been disabled.

Why did authorities target the hosting provider?
Authorities characterized Zservers as a bulletproof hosting provider: a service marketed as resistant to abuse complaints and law-enforcement disruption. The U.S. Treasury said Zservers infrastructure was supplied to LockBit affiliates and connected its services to LockBit operations. Dutch police reporting associated the investigated hosting service with ransomware and other cybercrime, including activity related to Conti.
These are agency characterizations and reported associations, not a finding here that every customer or server was involved in crime. The sources reviewed do not establish criminal convictions of the provider’s named operators.

What does the takedown establish—and what does it not?
Seizing 127 servers is a substantial operational disruption: it takes identified infrastructure out of service and can interrupt activity that depended on it. But the figure measures the scale of the seizure, not its long-term impact.
- Established: Dutch police seized 127 associated servers in Amsterdam on 12 February 2025, following an investigation that lasted about a year.
- Not established by the cited reporting: that all Zservers-related infrastructure was seized, that the provider permanently ceased operating, or that ransomware activity was durably reduced.
- Current status: the event is historical, and the sources cited here do not establish Zservers’ present operational status or account for any later prosecutions or related actions.
It is therefore accurate to describe the operation as a major infrastructure disruption and a win for law enforcement. Calling it the end of Zservers or a lasting defeat for ransomware would go beyond what the evidence shows.
