What QSSR is—and where to turn it off
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is an optional AI-upscaling graphics mode offered inside supported games. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, initially for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony describes the goal as improving fine detail and image stability, but its announcement does not give a numeric image-quality benchmark or identify a specific remedy for blur or shimmer. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes the mode as a game graphics option.
Open the affected game’s graphics or display options and disable QSSR there. Menu names and available modes can differ by game, so there is no universal PS5 menu path for the QSSR switch. Do not confuse it with the system-level “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting: Sony documents that option for certain PSSR-compatible games on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. It is not the documented QSSR control. PlayStation’s resolution guide covers system video-output settings.
Compare QSSR on and off in the same scene
- Choose a scene where you can reproduce the problem, such as foliage, fine textures, thin edges, or a busy environment.
- Keep the camera position, movement, display, and PS5 output settings the same. Switch QSSR off in the game’s graphics options, then inspect the scene again.
- If practical, repeat the comparison by turning QSSR back on. Note whether the softness or shimmer returns, and whether it appears mainly during camera movement or in particular details.
- Check another game and the PS5 home screen. Record the game version and PS5 model so you can distinguish a game-specific effect from a wider picture problem.
When a game offers multiple graphics modes, compare fine-detail clarity, shimmering or aliasing on high-contrast edges and foliage, stability during camera movement, and frame-rate behavior. Keep the scene and output conditions constant; otherwise, changes in resolution or refresh rate can cloud the comparison.

If QSSR appears to trigger the issue
If the same-scene test consistently shows the symptom only with QSSR enabled, use another graphics mode for now if the game provides one. Check the game’s current patch notes or support channel for updates. Sony said the first QSSR games were being patched to add the option, but its announcement does not identify a blur or shimmer defect or promise a corrective patch. The announcement is not evidence that a particular update will resolve your symptom.
For a reproducible issue, send the game’s support team a short capture or clear description. Include the game version, PS5 model, display model, output resolution and refresh rate, and whether switching QSSR on or off changes the image. That information helps separate a game-rendering issue from an output or display problem.

If the problem remains with QSSR off
Blur or shimmer that persists after disabling QSSR, appears across unrelated games, or affects the home screen points away from a QSSR-only rendering artifact. If you also see actual screen flicker or signal loss, check the HDMI and display path:
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor temporarily, bypassing a receiver, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Confirm that the display is on the correct input, and check for available display firmware updates.
- Try another HDMI cable or display port if available.
These are general picture and signal checks, not proven fixes for QSSR reconstruction blur or shimmer. Sony’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance covers broader picture and sound issues.

For flicker with 4K output, test Video Transfer Rate
If the screen flickers while the PS5 is outputting 4K, Sony suggests testing Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. This limits supported output formats and may improve picture quality in a signal problem. It can also reduce access to high-bandwidth modes such as 4K/120 Hz. It is not a documented QSSR rendering fix.

If the image problem continues after the comparison and display checks, contact the game’s support team for a symptom limited to that title. For broader PS5 picture problems, use PlayStation Repairs and troubleshooting guidance. Share the game version, console and display models, output resolution and refresh rate, a capture if possible, and the result of the QSSR on/off comparison.
