To automate recurring website checks, schedule a screenshot capture, save a baseline or previous image, compare new captures against it, and route meaningful changes and capture failures to someone who can act. A managed schedule can bundle those tasks; a code-owned setup can use Playwright Test or a screenshot API, with your own scheduler, storage, comparison, and notifications.
Choose what the check should tell you
A recurring screenshot can show that a page looks different, but a pixel difference does not explain whether the change is important. Before choosing a cadence or tool, define the monitored URL, the part of the page that matters, what counts as a noteworthy change, and who should receive a result.
- Monitor a region or the full page: a viewport capture focuses on what a visitor initially sees; a full-page capture can reveal changes farther down the page.
- Set a readiness condition: wait for a meaningful selector or other known ready state rather than capturing as soon as navigation begins.
- Control irrelevant variation: hide or mask ads, chat widgets, rotating banners, counters, and other elements that change without indicating a problem.
- Separate outcomes: a successful capture that differs from its baseline is not the same as a timeout, failed load, or other capture error.
For functional monitoring, pair the visual check with explicit assertions for expected content, URL, or interactions. A matching image alone does not prove that a workflow works.
Choose a recurring-check approach

This is a feature-based choice, not a measured performance comparison. Consider setup and maintenance, need for browser interactions, storage and retention control, webhook requirements, capture volume and cadence, and tolerance for false positives.

Set up a hosted recurring schedule
For a managed workflow, Allscreenshots documents creating schedules in its dashboard or programmatically through POST /v1/schedules. Its guide covers cadence, capture configuration, comparisons, delivery, failure alerts, automatic pausing after repeated failures, and retention. Refer to its scheduled screenshots guide and API example for current request fields and dashboard steps.
The guide lists hourly, every-few-hours, daily, weekly, monthly, and custom cron schedule options. These are that service’s options, not a universal standard. Set a frequency that matches how quickly you need to notice a change, and account for the schedule’s timezone and the number of captures it will generate. Its sample configuration values are examples, not defaults suitable for every site. The guide says schedules consume the monthly screenshot quota; confirm current plan and email-entitlement details with the service before relying on them.
Configure a stable target and wait condition, then choose whether to notify only on change or to retain and deliver every capture. Make delivery actionable: route alerts to a channel or system where a person can investigate, and configure a separate path for failed captures. Review representative image differences before relying on automated alerts.

Build a code-owned visual check with Playwright Test
Playwright Test can create a reference screenshot and compare later runs with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparison. The reference should be reviewed and committed or otherwise managed deliberately; update it only after confirming that a change is intentional.

Use the same browser and execution environment for baseline creation and recurring runs.
- Navigate and wait for the relevant content before taking the assertion screenshot. A selector-based wait is preferable when the page has a meaningful ready element.
- Capture the initial reference through a reviewed test run, then check the generated baseline into the workflow you use for test artifacts.
- Run the test on a schedule using your CI system, task scheduler, or job runner; Playwright’s screenshot assertion does not itself schedule runs or send your team’s alerts.
- Review changed images before accepting a new baseline. Do not blindly update snapshots, because that can turn an unexpected change into the new expected result.
A minimal test looks like this:

});Replace the example URL and selector with the page and ready state you need to monitor. Playwright documents PNG as the default screenshot format and WebP as an option. Its assertion options include full-page capture, masks for selected elements, pixel-difference tolerances, disabling animations, and a stylesheet to hide dynamic content. Rendering is environment-dependent. Microsoft Playwright documentation warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Keep the baseline and scheduled run environments consistent to reduce unrelated diffs.

Use a screenshot API as the capture step
A screenshot API can supply the image while your existing scheduler handles recurring execution. The lower-level Playwright screenshot API can save an image to a file or return a buffer for downstream processing, and supports full-page and element captures; scheduling, comparison, storage, and delivery remain separate jobs unless another component provides them. With any API-based design, make each scheduled run record the target, capture time, result status, and image or image location. Compare only successful captures. Preserve enough history to investigate whether a difference appeared suddenly or gradually, and ensure retries do not create duplicate or misleading change alerts.
Tune comparisons and notifications
- Start with a reviewable baseline: inspect the first capture and confirm it represents the page state you intend to monitor.
- Mask narrowly: hide only elements that are genuinely irrelevant. Broad masking can conceal a meaningful change.
- Tune sensitivity on real pages: a pixel threshold balances sensitivity and noise; it does not understand semantic importance. Review examples before letting a threshold drive urgent alerts.
- Choose delivery deliberately: send a useful diff or link to the image, identify the URL and run time, and explain whether the event is a visual change or capture failure.
- Plan for broken targets: decide how timeouts, failed loads, and repeated failures are reported and whether repeated errors should pause a job.

The same page reports changes on every run
Look for dynamic ads, rotating content, timestamps, counters, animations, or layout variation. Mask or hide only the volatile regions, disable animations where appropriate, and check that browser, operating system, and rendering settings match the baseline environment. Adjust comparison sensitivity only after reviewing representative diffs.

The page may not have reached its useful ready state when capture began. Wait for a selector associated with the content being checked, rather than relying on a short fixed delay alone. Separately record navigation failures and timeouts so they are not treated as successful, changed screenshots.

Alerts do not arrive, or failures are mistaken for changes
Verify the delivery destination and its current permissions, then test a known change and a deliberately failing target separately. Keep capture status distinct from visual comparison output so that an error cannot silently become a new baseline.
A new baseline differs on another machine or CI runner
Use a stable browser and rendering environment. Differences in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, or headless mode can alter pixels even when the page itself has not meaningfully changed.
