Despite the name, consumer UWB is mainly used to determine where devices are and how far apart they are—not to deliver Wi-Fi-like internet speeds.
What “ultra-wideband” means
IEEE defines UWB as a radio communication and sensing technology whose signals occupy more than 500 MHz of instantaneous bandwidth or have a fractional bandwidth greater than 20% of the center frequency. These are alternative ways to meet the definition, not a promise of a particular data rate. IEEE Technology Navigator describes the technology in those terms.
Bandwidth describes the span of radio frequencies a signal occupies; throughput describes how much useful data a connection carries over time. A very wide radio signal does not automatically make a technology a fast general-purpose network. Modern consumer UWB is designed chiefly for precise ranging and spatial awareness.
Why UWB is used for finding and ranging
UWB devices exchange radio signals and use their travel time to estimate distance. That time-of-flight approach can provide more precise spatial context than simply detecting that another device is somewhere within radio range. With suitable support on both devices, this can help a phone locate a tag, a vehicle recognize an authorized nearby device, or a system determine a device’s position indoors.

- Device-to-device services: Nearby devices can use spatial information to support peer services.
- Enterprise real-time location systems: UWB can contribute to asset tracking and indoor positioning deployments.
FiRa describes ranging-round delays from a few milliseconds to a few tens of milliseconds, depending on protocol and conditions. This is the timing of ranging exchanges, not a universal guarantee about an app’s response time.
How UWB standards fit together
IEEE 802.15.4z-2020 is an amendment that enhances UWB physical-layer capabilities and associated ranging techniques, including coding, ranging integrity, and MAC support for time-of-flight procedures. FiRa builds interoperable profiles above the IEEE layers, specifying how compatible devices handle ranging behavior, message formats, security-related mechanisms, and host-to-UWB-subsystem interfaces.

FiRa’s specifications extend IEEE 802.15.4-2020 and 802.15.4z-2020 requirements. Its Link Layer specification supports application-data exchange during ranging or as a dedicated transfer. In short, UWB names the radio capability, IEEE defines core protocol layers, and FiRa specifies interoperable behavior for supported applications. [FiRa specifications]
Is UWB faster than Wi-Fi?
No—not as a practical replacement for a Wi-Fi network. FiRa’s technical FAQ says that current IEEE 802.15.4z allows small amounts of data communication and limits speed to a few tens of Mbps. That is enough for supporting data exchanges, but UWB’s key consumer advantage is ranging, while Wi-Fi is the natural choice for sustained high-throughput networking. [FiRa technical FAQ]

Bluetooth is often a more widely supported option for low-power accessories. The right comparison depends on the job: location precision and secured ranging, sustained data throughput, latency, range, power use, device support, regulatory availability, and cost are separate considerations—not one speed contest.
UWB compared with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
| Factor | UWB | Bluetooth | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical strength | Precise ranging and spatial awareness | Broad low-power accessory support | Sustained, high-throughput networking |
| Data throughput | For current 802.15.4z small-data communication, FiRa says speed is limited to a few tens of Mbps. | Not stated in the cited UWB sources | Not stated in the cited UWB sources |
| Ranging latency | FiRa says ranging-round delays can be a few milliseconds to a few tens of milliseconds, depending on protocol and conditions. | Not stated in the cited UWB sources | Not stated in the cited UWB sources |
| Range | FiRa’s overview cites typical radio range up to 200 metres; this is not a guaranteed consumer distance. | Not stated in the cited UWB sources | Not stated in the cited UWB sources |
| Positioning and security | Designed for fine ranging; secured ranging can support proximity-aware access. | Not stated in the cited UWB sources | Not stated in the cited UWB sources |
| Device support and power | Support varies by device and ecosystem; power figures are not stated in the cited UWB sources. | Often broader accessory support; comparative power figures are not stated in the cited UWB sources. | Comparative device-support and power figures are not stated in the cited UWB sources. |
The range figure needs particular care: FiRa presents up to 200 metres as a typical radio-range reference, not a promise that any phone or tracker will work at that distance. Transmit power, antennas, channel, body blockage, regulatory limits, and the surrounding environment affect actual results. [FiRa: What UWB Does]

Who should consider UWB products?
Consumers choosing a tracker
A UWB tracker tag may offer more precise direction or distance information than a basic proximity alert, but the benefit depends on compatible hardware and software across the tag, phone, operating system, and finding ecosystem. Check phone support, available operating-system APIs, ecosystem compatibility, whether the battery is replaceable, and regional availability before buying. UWB support should not be assumed just because a phone has Bluetooth.
Engineers prototyping a product
A UWB development kit or 802.15.4z evaluation module is a prototyping tool, not a ready-made consumer solution. Confirm the board and antenna, SDK, certification status, and supported channels fit the intended design and region.

Businesses planning indoor location or access control
Enterprise deployments can use UWB for real-time location systems, asset tracking, or access-control projects. Evaluate coverage and installation conditions alongside device interoperability, security design, and the needs of the specific workflow; a radio’s headline range does not establish site-wide performance.
