To upgrade an older LEGO Power Functions (PF) model, replace its infrared receiver and battery/control setup with a Powered Up hub, then control it through the Powered Up app or a compatible physical remote. To keep PF motors, use a correctly wired PF-to-LPF2 adapter and test the connection before installing it. A third-party 2.4 GHz transmitter-and-driver system is another option, but compatibility must be checked for the exact parts.

Choose a control route before you rebuild

The right conversion depends on what you want to keep and how you want to control the model. LEGO warns that “Powered Up hubs are not compatible with Power Function motors and Power Function hubs/receivers are not compatible with Powered Up motors.” Treat physical connector fit and electrical compatibility as separate checks: a plug that fits does not prove that it is safe to operate.

Route Control method Key trade-off
Powered Up hub with app Phone running the Powered Up app Uses the modern LEGO ecosystem, but requires a phone while operating through the app.
Powered Up hub with compatible physical remote Handset control, where supported Useful for a dedicated model without relying on app controls.
Keep PF motors with an adapter Powered Up hub and a PF-to-LPF2 adapter Preserves selected older motors; connector direction and electrical compatibility need careful checking.
Third-party 2.4 GHz transmitter system Transmitter paired with a receiver or driver May provide conventional handset control, but motor, voltage, current and connector compatibility depend on the specific system.

Before choosing, check how many ports the hub provides, whether its current capacity suits the motors, how much space the hub and power source need, whether programming support matters, and the total cost of the required parts. LEGO documents the PF system and the compatibility boundary between PF and Powered Up; a third-party system should be evaluated on its own specifications. See LEGO Power Functions help and ZENE Bricks.

Parts to identify for a conversion

  • Powered Up Hub 88009: the modern LEGO control hub option; confirm its size and port count against the model.
  • Powered Up Remote 88010: a physical-control option when compatible with the hub and setup.
  • PF-to-LPF2 adapter cable: needed to retain older PF motors with a Powered Up hub. LEGO part 5306 is one adapter cited in the migration guidance; verify connector direction and wiring for your parts.
  • Existing PF equipment: inventory motors, lights, receiver, battery box and cables before deciding what to replace.

Names and part numbers help with parts searches, but do not establish that every combination of motor, adapter, hub and power source is compatible. Check the exact parts and their specifications.

LEGO Functions Power Functions IR RX 8884
  • IR Reciver has 2 outputs that connect up to 2 different LEGO Power Functions
  • The LEGO Power Functions IR RC system operates on 4 different channels enabling you to control 4 different models at the same time. Use 8885 IR Remote Control or 8879 IR Speed Remote control to control functions on the IR Receiver
  • The reaching distance of the infra-red RC system is at least 30' (10m)
  • Requires battery box (Item #8881), not included
  • 1 piece

Convert the model step by step

  1. Inventory the existing system. List each PF motor, light, receiver, battery box and cable.
  2. Decide what stays. Mark which motors and lights you will retain and which control electronics you will replace.
  3. Choose a hub. Make sure it fits the model and has enough ports for the parts you plan to connect.
  4. Get the correct adapter if retaining PF motors. Check connector direction and wiring rather than assuming that a physically matching plug is electrically suitable.
  5. Bench-test one motor. Pair the controls, then check direction and speed response. Stop if the hub behaves unstably or the motor does not respond as expected.
  6. Install and route the electronics. Keep cables clear of gears and secure the hub and power source so they cannot shift during operation.
  7. Set up control. Pair a compatible physical remote or configure the app, then save the control layout.
  8. Keep the old PF receiver and remote as a fallback. Retain them until the converted model has proved reliable.

This sequence follows LEGO’s migration guidance: inventory first, select a hub, add an appropriate adapter if needed, bench-test, then install and route the electronics. See LEGO’s Power Functions and migration help.

Check the old PF system before replacing it

If the model has stopped responding, verify the legacy setup before concluding that it needs a conversion. LEGO’s troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks:

LEGO Functions Power Functions IR TX 8885
  • The LEGO Power Functions IR Remote Control system operates on 4 different channels enabling the use of 4 models being controlled at the same time
  • Control up to 8 different LEGO Power Functions with one remote by connecting 2 LEGO Power Functions to 4 different receivers each
  • The reaching distance of the infra-red RC system is at least 30' (10m)
  • Requires IR Receiver (Item #8884), not included; Requires 3 AAA (1.5V) batteries, not included
  • 1 piece
  • Install fresh batteries and check the battery box and receiver lights.
  • Set the remote and receiver to the same channel. PF has four selectable channels, so mismatched settings prevent the intended control connection.
  • Reseat the plugs at the battery box, receiver and motor.
  • Test a motor directly from the battery box to help distinguish a motor problem from a receiver or remote problem.

What to expect from a DIY 2.4 GHz upgrade

There is no single reliable range or runtime figure for every conversion. Results depend on the hub or third-party electronics, battery, motor load and radio environment. Treat those as properties of the specific build rather than guaranteed results of changing its control system; test the finished model under the conditions in which you intend to use it.
