Use standard Stripe Payments if your SaaS takes payment for its own product or service. Consider Stripe Connect if it must onboard other businesses or people, route money from their sales, collect a platform fee, or pay them out. The deciding factor is who sells to the buyer and who needs to receive the proceeds—not whether you describe the product as SaaS, a marketplace, or a platform.
How to decide between Stripe Payments and Connect
Standard Stripe Payments is the simpler fit when the SaaS is the seller and receives its own customer payments. Connect is designed for platforms and marketplaces that coordinate payments involving multiple parties, such as a platform and the sellers, service providers, or creators using it.
Use these prompts to identify which payment setup better matches the business:
| Decision point | Standard Payments is more likely to fit | Connect is more likely to fit |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells to the buyer? | The SaaS sells its own product or service. | A third-party seller, provider, creator, or other connected account makes the sale. |
| Who receives the proceeds? | The SaaS receives payment for its own sale. | A connected account receives some or all of the proceeds, potentially with a platform fee retained. |
| What happens to the funds? | The SaaS processes its own payments without paying third-party sellers. | The platform needs charges, transfers, splits, or payouts involving other parties. |
| Who needs onboarding? | No third-party payees need to be onboarded. | The platform needs to onboard and verify people or businesses that will be paid. |
| What payment operations are required? | The SaaS manages its own payment relationship. | The platform needs connected-account management, payout operations, or related reporting and tax workflows. |
These are practical product-fit prompts, not legal classifications. A platform’s responsibilities depend on its business model, contracts, geography, and Stripe configuration; the product name alone does not establish who is merchant of record or responsible for a particular obligation.

How Connect routes payments
Connect is not a single funds flow. Stripe describes several patterns that place the charge, transfer, and payout steps in different places. The integration should reflect the actual seller relationship and settlement arrangement.
| Flow | Where the charge happens | How the funds move |
|---|---|---|
| Direct charge | On a connected account. | The seller’s connected account is associated with the charge; the platform can separately charge for its services where appropriate. |
| Destination charge | The platform creates the charge. | The platform collects the payment and transfers funds to the connected account. |
| Separate charges and transfers | The charge and transfer are separate steps. | The platform can route funds separately from a particular charge, including splitting proceeds among sellers. |
| Top-ups and payouts | Not necessarily tied to a new incoming payment. | Funds can be added to an account or paid out independently of a specific charge. |
These patterns are not interchangeable labels for the same settlement. Confirm which flow fits the commercial arrangement and the applicable integration and account requirements before building around it.

What Connect onboarding entails
Connect offers hosted, embedded, and custom-built onboarding. The choice affects how much of the onboarding experience the platform controls and how much engineering and maintenance it takes on.
| Onboarding approach | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted | Stripe provides the onboarding flow. | Less of the experience is built directly into the platform’s interface. |
| Embedded | Prebuilt onboarding is placed within the platform experience. | Offers an in-product experience without requiring the platform to build every onboarding component itself. |
| Custom-built | The platform creates its own onboarding flow. | Provides the most control, but Stripe describes it as requiring significant engineering resources to integrate and maintain. |
Planning should include more than the initial API work. Verification requirements can change, and the platform may need ongoing processes for account information, payout operations, and seller support.

How Connect pricing and monetization differ
Connect pricing depends on configuration and geography. Stripe describes two broad approaches to payment pricing; their costs should be compared using the local pricing page and the platform’s actual account setup, rather than a single global figure.
| Pricing approach | Who pays Stripe processing fees? | Additional cost considerations described by Stripe |
|---|---|---|
| Connected accounts pay directly | Connected accounts pay their own processing fees. | Stripe says platforms using this option do not incur additional account, payout-volume, tax-reporting, or per-payout fees. |
| Platform handles pricing for users | The platform is responsible for Stripe processing fees. | Local pricing pages show monthly active-account and per-payout fees; amounts and currencies vary by country. |
Model the total cost using current local pricing and any negotiated terms. For example, Stripe’s India and UK pricing pages use different currencies and amounts, so neither is a universal Connect price.

- The Clover Compact and Clover Mini /Station sync with each other through the Clover Dashboard and cloud-based network. This allows you to manage transactions, track sales, and access business data across both devices seamlessly. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing account through Powering POS. Connect can also support platform revenue models, including markups on payment transactions or other services. Stripe describes revenue-share partner eligibility as requiring Connect with Standard accounts, Stripe Checkout or Stripe Elements, and a payments-volume run rate of $1 million USD. That is a program eligibility criterion on Stripe’s features page, not a guarantee that a particular SaaS will be accepted.

Stripe describes Connect tools for identity verification, KYC-related checks, sanctions screening, onboarding, and payout operations. Its marketplace materials also describe tax-reporting features, including US 1099 workflows. These capabilities can support operations, but they do not by themselves establish that the platform has no remaining legal, tax, or consumer-facing responsibilities.

Stripe Support describes a direct contractual relationship between Stripe and connected accounts and says that, unless the platform elects otherwise, the platform is not responsible for Standard connected-account activity in the context covered by that support material. Do not extend that statement to every Connect configuration or account type. Check the current governing agreements, the specific connected-account type, and the platform’s own obligations for its jurisdiction and business arrangement.
Quick Recap
Questions to resolve before implementation
- Identify the seller. Determine whether the buyer is paying the SaaS for its own offering or paying a third party through the platform.
- Map the settlement. Specify which party creates the charge, who receives the proceeds, whether funds are split or transferred, and when payouts occur.
- Choose the account and onboarding model. Establish which connected-account type and hosted, embedded, or custom onboarding experience fit the intended operation.
- Estimate full operating costs. Check current local pricing for the chosen setup and account for both payment fees and platform-side payout or active-account charges where applicable.
- Review obligations with the actual configuration in view. Confirm relevant Stripe terms, country support, verification and tax workflows, and the platform’s independent legal duties.
