If a custom .pkpass file will not add to Apple Wallet, check the pass data and its digital signature first. Apple identifies malformed JSON, misspelled keys or values, a pass type ID that does not match the signing certificate, and a missing Apple Worldwide Developer Relations (WWDR) Intermediate Certificate as common problems. The exact cause depends on the file, signing setup, device, and Wallet log.
Start with the pass file and signature
A .pkpass is not just a file with the right extension. Its contents must follow Apple’s pass format, and its signature must validate against the identifiers and certificates used to create it. Renaming a file or changing its extension does not fix invalid contents or a broken signature.
Apple’s pass-building guidance identifies malformed JSON, misspelled keys or values, a pass type identifier that does not match the signing certificate, and a signature missing the WWDR intermediate certificate among common errors. Apple also requires the team identifier to match the signing identity and the certificate to be unexpired.
Check the pass data
Open the source package and inspect pass.json. Confirm that it parses as JSON and that required fields are present with exact spelling and expected values. Apple specifies these required fields:

formatVersion, with the value1.passTypeIdentifier.serialNumber.organizationName.
The passTypeIdentifier must match the certificate used to sign the pass. Apple says the combination of pass type identifier and serial number uniquely identifies a pass. See Apple’s required-key and pass-format documentation for the format requirements.
Correct the original pass data, then rebuild and sign the pass again. Editing the JSON after signing invalidates the signature, so any change to the pass requires a new signature.

Verify identifiers, certificate, and signature
Compare the identifiers in the pass with the signing identity. Check that the pass’s passTypeIdentifier and teamIdentifier match the certificate and developer account used to sign it. Confirm the certificate has not expired and that the signature includes Apple’s WWDR Intermediate Certificate. Apple lists a pass type ID mismatch and a missing intermediate certificate among the errors that can prevent a pass from being added.
If you correct an identifier, renew a certificate, or add a missing certificate to the signing chain, rebuild and sign the pass again before retrying. Use Apple’s pass-building troubleshooting guidance to check how the pass and signing identity are expected to align.

Read Wallet’s logs instead of guessing
If the data and signing checks look correct, inspect the logs on the device where the pass fails. Apple recommends using logs to find the reason a pass does not display or add.
- Simulator: Drag the
.pkpassonto the Simulator, then inspect the Simulator device logs in Console. - Physical iPhone or iPad: Use Xcode’s Organizer or console workflow to inspect the connected device logs.
Filter or search for the pass type ID or serial number to narrow the entries. Follow the specific error in the log; without the pass artifact and its log entry, it is not possible to identify one certain cause.

Retry using a supported delivery route
Apple documents adding a pass from an app or App Clip, downloading it from a webpage, or receiving it as an email attachment. If you are distributing it from a website, the page should present an Add to Apple Wallet button and download the pass when the user taps it. Start with the original downloaded .pkpass, not a preview, renamed archive, or intermediate webpage. See Apple’s pass distribution guidance.
Separate installation errors from update errors
webServiceURL and authenticationToken support the web service used to register and update passes that are already installed. Apple does not identify them as required keys for a basic installation. If Wallet refuses to add the pass, first check its format, signature, identifiers, and logs. Investigate the update service only if installation succeeds but later pass updates fail. Apple describes these fields in its web service documentation.
