Set up Stripe Connect only if your SaaS platform will extend Stripe payment processing or other Stripe products to merchants. If you only charge customers for access to your software and do not process payments for your users, Connect is not needed for that SaaS billing arrangement. If merchants will take payments through your product, decide the commercial model, charge flow, and responsibility for fees and losses before creating connected accounts.
Do you need Stripe Connect for your SaaS?
Connect is for a platform that enables merchants to use Stripe payment processing or other Stripe products through the platform. A software company that only bills its customers a SaaS subscription does not need Connect solely to collect those subscription payments.
For a marketplace, the key question is whether your product is involved in processing customer payments for sellers. If it is, Connect may fit; the right configuration depends on who is the merchant of record, who pays processing fees, who is responsible for negative balances, and how money moves from the buyer to one or more sellers.
Choose the commercial model before designing the integration
Stripe describes two commercial approaches for SaaS platforms. They affect fee allocation, negative-balance responsibility, and how the platform earns revenue. The terms and availability for a particular platform can depend on its account and region.

| Model | Merchant role and fees | Negative balances | Common charge approach | Platform revenue options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe-owned pricing or referral model | Connected merchants are merchant of record and pay Stripe processing fees. | Connected merchants are responsible for their negative balances. | Generally direct charges. | The platform may charge a SaaS subscription or application fees. Revenue share may be available to eligible platforms that meet activation targets; confirm current terms with Stripe. |
| Buy-rate model | The platform buys and resells processing; connected merchants remain merchant of record. | Connected merchants are liable to the platform for negative balances. | Direct charges or destination charges using on_behalf_of. | The platform sets its processing pricing and may use platform pricing tools for application-fee logic; confirm current commercial terms with Stripe. |
Do not assume that a revenue-share program applies or that a pricing feature is available in your region. Confirm the commercial arrangement with Stripe before building pricing, seller contracts, or forecasts around it.
Choose how each customer payment reaches sellers
The charge flow should match your actual order and settlement model. In particular, establish whether each buyer payment belongs to one seller or may need to be divided across sellers, and whether you know the recipient when the buyer pays.

| Decision axis | Direct charges | Separate charges and transfers |
|---|---|---|
| Where the charge is created | On the connected account; Stripe describes this as the general approach for the Stripe-owned SaaS model. | On the platform account, followed by transfers to connected accounts. |
| Recipient pattern | A merchant taking payment from its own customer. | One payment can be split among multiple accounts, or the recipient can be selected after the charge. |
| Platform exposure | Depends on the pricing model and the selected account responsibilities. | Stripe fees, refunds, and disputes affect the platform balance. |
| Refund implications | Check the current Stripe guidance for refund and fee behavior in the chosen configuration. | Refunding the platform charge does not automatically reverse related transfers. |
| Geography | Verify support for the connected-account countries and the selected flow. | Stripe documents regional restrictions and generally requires the platform and connected accounts to be in the same region, subject to documented exceptions. |
Separate charges and transfers are a fit to evaluate when an order pays multiple sellers or the seller cannot be determined at checkout. They also make the platform account central to the charge and its related fees, refunds, and disputes. Geography, the merchant-of-record arrangement, the number and timing of recipients, dashboard needs, and loss allocation all matter; neither flow is a universal default.
Set account responsibilities and the seller dashboard experience
Before provisioning production accounts, decide which party collects payment fees and which party is responsible for connected-account negative balances. Stripe’s Accounts v2 configuration makes these responsibility choices, and they affect both information collection and dashboard configuration. Some settings must be selected when adding merchant configuration and cannot later be edited.

Choose how sellers will complete requirements and manage their accounts. If the platform collects KYC requirements itself, it also takes on ongoing operational work to monitor and maintain compliance as requirements change. Confirm that the intended responsibility configuration is supported for the account type and payment flow before creating production connected accounts.
How do I set up Stripe Connect for a SaaS marketplace?
- Register and activate the platform. Set up the platform’s Stripe account and complete activation before creating connected seller accounts.
- Settle the operating model. Decide between Stripe-owned pricing/referral and buy-rate, then document who is merchant of record, who pays processing fees, who carries negative-balance responsibility, and how the platform earns revenue.
- Select the charge flow. Use the order and settlement requirements to decide between charges on connected accounts and platform charges followed by transfers. Check country and region support for the exact account countries and flow.
- Configure connected-account responsibilities. Decide who collects requirements, who pays payment fees, who is responsible for negative balances, and what dashboard experience sellers need. Validate choices before creating production accounts because some configuration is not editable later.
- Create connected accounts server-side. Create each seller’s account from your server. If you already collected eligible seller information, prefill those fields before sending the seller through onboarding.
- Generate an onboarding link. Create an Account Link for the connected account with the type
account_onboarding, plus arefresh_urlandreturn_url. Send the authenticated seller to that link within your product. Account Links are temporary and single-use, so create a fresh link whenever a seller needs to resume onboarding. - Verify readiness from account state. Do not treat the return redirect as proof that onboarding is complete. Retrieve the connected account’s state or handle
account.updated; inspect payment or charge readiness and outstanding requirements, then give sellers a way to continue onboarding if needed. - Build webhook-driven operations and reconciliation. Use Connect webhooks, including relevant account and application-fee events, to keep merchant status and payment records current. Define how your system handles refunds, disputes, corrections, and recovery or reconciliation of seller funds before launch.
Plan refunds, disputes, and reconciliation before launch
For separate charges and transfers, a refund against the platform charge does not by itself undo money already transferred to sellers. Decide how the platform will account for this difference and recover or reconcile seller funds when appropriate. Transfer reversals are for related refunds or disputes, or for correcting a transfer, and remain subject to balance and account constraints; they are not an automatic consequence of refunding a charge.

- Confirm that Connect is appropriate for the way your product handles merchant payments, rather than using it solely for SaaS subscription billing.
- Confirm current commercial terms, pricing features, and any eligibility requirements with Stripe before promising revenue share or setting merchant prices.
- Check current documentation for supported platform and connected-account countries, the selected payment flow, account requirements, and the API version you plan to use.
- Test seller onboarding recovery and webhook-driven status changes, not just the successful return from an Account Link.
- Document fee, negative-balance, refund, dispute, and reconciliation responsibilities for the selected account configuration.
Stripe’s account requirements, supported regions, API behavior, and commercial terms can change. Validate them against the current Stripe documentation for your platform’s country, seller countries, account configuration, and intended flow before launch.
