Choose the window by the light reaching the plant’s leaves—not by direction alone. A north window is often a good starting point for low-light plants, east or shaded west exposures for many medium-light plants, and bright south or southwest exposures for many high-light plants. Distance from the glass, direct-sun hours, outdoor shade, and the season can change what a spot is actually like.

Which window is best for my houseplants?

First assess the light where the plant will sit, then choose a plant suited to those conditions. University of Minnesota Extension’s advice is to “Select a plant with requirements that match the light environment in your home or office.” UMN Extension’s indoor plant lighting guide uses window direction as a starting point, not a guarantee:

Light category Possible starting location Examples from UMN Extension
Low North-facing window or fairly dark corner Pothos, philodendron, snake plant, peace lily, ZZ plant
Medium East-facing window, or near a west-facing window out of direct sun Rubber plant, spider plant, begonia, jade, hoya, peperomia, Monstera
High Bright south- or southwest-facing location Cacti, succulents, citrus, herbs, hibiscus, orchids

These categories cover broad groups rather than every species or cultivar. A roof overhang, tree, nearby building, or several feet of distance from the window can reduce the light, even at a south-facing window. Glass and season also affect exposure. When two windows are candidates, compare the conditions at the exact place the plant would sit: direct or indirect sun, approximate hours of direct sun, distance from the glass, shade, and seasonal change.

Can a plant go in a north-facing window?

Often, yes, if it is a low-light plant and the spot is not unusually dim. Chinese evergreen, cast iron plant, parlor palm, dracaena, pothos, philodendron, snake plant, peace lily, and ZZ plant are among the low-light choices listed by UMN Extension. “Low light” does not mean no light: growth may be slower than in a brighter location, and the plant may use less water.

North-facing windows are not automatically right for every plant described as shade-tolerant. Assess the actual light, and watch the plant over time. If it becomes leggy, loses variegation, drops leaves, or fails to flower, it may not be receiving enough light; those symptoms can also have other causes.

Where should medium-light plants sit?

Try an east-facing window or a spot near a west-facing window that avoids direct sun as an initial placement, then adjust based on shading and distance. UMN Extension’s examples include elephant ear, ferns, rubber plant, fiddle-leaf fig, begonia, spider plant, jade, schefflera, hoya, peperomia, and Monstera. The group is broad, so use species-specific guidance where available rather than treating the label as an exact light prescription.

Jade plant

Jade is a useful reminder that a general category may not capture a plant’s best appearance. Penn State Extension says jade plants “will grow and look their best when they get four or more hours of direct sunlight daily,” and notes they thrive in south-facing windows. That advice is specific to jade, not a rule for all houseplants.

Hoya

Penn State Extension describes hoyas as suited to medium to bright indirect light beside a south-, east-, or west-facing window. Use the window direction together with the indirect-light qualification when choosing a position.

Monstera

UMN Extension’s guidance for Monstera cuttings favors north or east windows and warns against direct southern or western sunlight. That recommendation concerns propagation cuttings; it should not be treated as a universal placement rule for every mature Monstera. See the cutting-specific guidance.

Which plants suit bright south or southwest windows?

Bright south- or southwest-facing locations are reasonable starting points for many high-light plants. UMN Extension lists cacti and succulents, citrus, basil and other culinary herbs, hibiscus, gardenia, jasmine, geraniums, poinsettia, and orchids. Brightness alone is not the whole test: note how many hours of direct sun reach the leaves and whether the plant has been acclimated to it.

Orchids are not all interchangeable

Penn State Extension says Phalaenopsis orchids do best in east or west windows, while a north window may not provide enough light for slipper orchids. These are species-specific distinctions, so “orchids need a south window” is too broad. Consult Penn State’s orchid guidance for those examples.

How much light does a plant need?

Window direction is a practical shorthand; a light measurement can make the comparison more concrete. UMN Extension, in guidance reviewed in 2026, gives the following broad categories:

Category Light intensity range stated by UMN Extension
Low 50–150 µmol m−2 s−1; 50–250 foot-candles; or 10–15 watts
Medium 150–250 µmol m−2 s−1; 250–1,000 foot-candles; or 15–20 watts
High 250–450 µmol m−2 s−1; more than 1,000 foot-candles; or more than 20 watts

These are the category ranges in UMN Extension’s 2026-reviewed guidance, not a reading for a particular home or an exact prescription for every species. Do not use bulb wattage alone as a measure of plant-usable light: UMN says packaging should report watts and another measure of light intensity, such as PPF, lumens, or foot-candles.

What if my windows do not provide enough light?

A supplemental grow light can help when natural light is inadequate. UMN Extension says white or mixed/balanced lights are suitable for most plants at any growth stage. Its broad placement starting points are 12–24 inches from foliage houseplants and 6–12 inches from flowering houseplants; it also gives total light durations of 12–14 hours for foliage plants and 14–16 hours for flowering plants. These are general guidelines from UMN’s 2026-reviewed advice, not universal settings for every species or fixture. Fixture intensity and heat matter, so follow the light’s directions and watch how the plant responds.

Why are my houseplant’s leaves pale or scorched?

Pale or yellow leaves, leggy stems, leaf drop, reduced variegation, or failure to flower can be clues that a plant is getting too little light. Scorched or bleached leaves can point to excessive light or a sudden move into stronger sun. Neither set of symptoms proves light is the cause; consider other growing conditions as well.

Seasonal shifts can change a familiar window’s exposure. In spring, the sun’s angle and strength change. UMN Extension recommends moving plants closer to bright windows gradually over one to two weeks, especially near south- or west-facing windows. Pothos, philodendrons, peace lilies, and ferns can scorch if moved abruptly into strong sun; pale patches or crispy edges are warning signs to slow the transition. A dimmer location also usually means slower growth and lower water use, so check the soil before watering rather than keeping the same watering schedule automatically.
