For an issuer’s pass, open the original link or message and tap Add to Apple Wallet. For a barcode or QR code saved as a photo, use the separate Add to Wallet prompt in Photos if it appears.
First, identify what the QR code or link contains
A QR code is often just a shortcut to a webpage, app, or ticketing service. It does not automatically become an Apple Wallet pass when scanned. If it opens a page, look there for the issuer’s Add to Apple Wallet button. Wallet addition normally depends on the merchant, event organizer, school, gym, or other issuer providing a supported pass and an add-to-Wallet flow. Apple’s guide to using passes in Wallet recommends contacting the issuer if that option is missing.
| What you have | What to do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| A link or QR code that opens an issuer’s pass page | Use the issuer’s Add to Apple Wallet control, if available. | The link or QR itself is not necessarily a pass. |
| A photo or screenshot containing a barcode or QR code | On an eligible iPhone, open it in Photos and use Add to Wallet if offered. | Some codes rotate or expire, so a saved image may not work. |
| A code with no supported add option | Ask the issuer whether it provides Wallet passes; you can also create a basic pass manually. | Manual entry does not establish that an issuer’s credential or code is valid. |
Add an issuer-provided pass from its link or QR code
- Scan the QR code or open the link in the app, email, text message, website, or other communication from the issuer.
- On the resulting page or in the issuer’s app, tap Add to Apple Wallet.
- Follow the onscreen instructions, then tap Add if that button appears.
If scanning sends you to a webpage but there is no Wallet button, do not assume that saving the page or its QR code will create the same pass. Contact the issuer and ask whether it supports Apple Wallet passes. Apple’s Wallet instructions identify the issuer as the right contact when an add option is unavailable.
Create a basic pass from a barcode or QR-code image
Apple also documents a distinct image-based option: open a photo or screenshot containing a barcode or QR code in Photos and choose Add to Wallet if the prompt appears. Follow the onscreen steps. Apple’s current iPhone guide to creating passes says this requires iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro or later. Availability may also vary by region and language.

- Save or take a photo or screenshot of the barcode or QR code.
- Open the image in Photos.
- If Photos offers Add to Wallet, tap it and follow the onscreen steps.
This is not a way to turn any URL into a Wallet pass: it applies to an image containing a code, and the prompt may not appear for every image. If the code changes over time or expires, the resulting pass may not scan. For a ticket or other time-sensitive credential, use the issuer’s live pass rather than relying on a screenshot.
Use manual pass creation only for a basic record
Wallet also offers a manual creation route: tap the add-card button, choose Create a Pass, then Create Pass Manually, select a template, and edit its fields. Apple documents this as a way to make a pass-like record; it does not say that manual entry recreates an issuer’s live credential or makes a copied code valid. The option is therefore not a substitute for an issuer-provided ticket, membership, or other credential.

If the pass does not appear or scan
- No Add to Apple Wallet button: Reopen the issuer’s original app, message, email, or link, then contact the issuer if the option is still absent.
- The photo-based prompt is missing: Confirm the image clearly shows a barcode or QR code and that the device and software meet Apple’s stated eligibility requirements. The feature may vary by region and language.
- The pass was created from a screenshot but will not scan: Check whether the issuer’s code rotates, changes, or expires. Apple Support warns that a photograph of an expiring code—such as a concert ticket—will not work. See Apple Support’s pass-creation guidance, published September 15, 2026.
- You need a valid ticket or membership credential: Return to the issuer’s official app or site for its supported pass; do not rely on a manually entered or static image version unless the issuer confirms it is valid.
Present the pass when you need it
When a Wallet pass contains a barcode or QR code, display the pass so the reader or scanner can read it. Apple’s guide to using passes, cards, and keys describes presenting barcode- or QR-code passes for use.
