A 5G icon does not guarantee a faster connection. Verizon’s Nationwide 5G is designed chiefly to extend coverage using low-band spectrum, and Verizon says its performance is typically comparable to 4G LTE. In a particular place and moment, that connection can be slower than LTE—especially if LTE has a less congested or wider usable channel.

Why can Verizon 5G be slower than LTE?

“5G” describes a generation of cellular technology, not one uniform radio channel or speed. Verizon uses different spectrum layers for its Nationwide service and its 5G Ultra Wideband service. A phone on Nationwide 5G may be connected to a low-band layer with broad reach but limited capacity; a phone on Ultra Wideband may be using a faster mid-band or high-band layer.

That distinction explains why a 5G symbol can appear even when a speed test does not beat LTE. The symbol indicates a 5G connection, not that the phone is receiving the fastest 5G spectrum, an uncongested channel, or a higher speed than every available LTE connection.

Nationwide 5G prioritizes reach

Low-band signals travel farther and can reach locations that are difficult for higher-frequency signals to cover. The trade-off is lower speed and capacity than higher-band spectrum. Verizon describes low-band 5G performance as typically similar to 4G LTE in its 5G support information and spectrum explainer.

That makes Nationwide 5G useful for broad availability, but it does not guarantee a speed upgrade over LTE at every location. If a nearby LTE channel is less loaded, or offers more capacity to your phone at that moment, LTE can perform better.

Ultra Wideband is a different layer

Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband uses mid-band C-Band and high-band mmWave spectrum. Mid-band is a balance between coverage and capacity; mmWave can deliver very high peak performance, but its range is short. Verizon says its 2021 C-Band auction win added an average of 161 MHz nationwide, a figure it reported in 2023. That spectrum improves the network where deployed and usable, but it does not mean every customer or every 5G connection is on C-Band.

Verizon reports an approximate 163–622 Mbps download range for 5G Ultra Wideband mobile service, representing the 25th–75th percentiles over the six months ending February 28, 2026; Verizon cautions that individual results vary. This is a reported range for Ultra Wideband, not a promise for Nationwide 5G or a comparison with your specific LTE connection.

How Dynamic Spectrum Sharing affects the 5G label

When Verizon launched 5G Nationwide in 2020, it used Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). DSS lets 4G LTE and 5G operate simultaneously on the same spectrum band. Verizon’s launch announcement said DSS allows 5G service to run alongside LTE on the same band.

Sharing spectrum helps Verizon make 5G available without reserving an entirely separate band for it everywhere. But a 5G label alone does not tell you how much capacity is available to your connection. The Nationwide launch announcement said the service covered more than 200 million people in 2020; that is a historical launch coverage figure, not a measure of current 5G speed or a guarantee of service at a particular address.

Why speeds change by location and time

Cell sites have finite capacity. When many people use the same site, data can slow; Verizon says speeds can recover as demand falls or a device connects to another site. Congestion can affect LTE as well as 5G, so the network-generation icon by itself does not identify the cause.

What published speed evidence does—and does not—show

Verizon’s description of low-band performance supports the narrower point that Nationwide 5G may feel much like LTE, not the claim that every Verizon customer is slower on 5G. Results vary with market, device, spectrum layer, signal conditions, and congestion.

Independent measurement also depends on what is being measured. Opensignal’s January 2025 report identifies mid-band spectrum (1–6 GHz) as important because it balances coverage and speed. Opensignal reports and FCC summaries distinguish coverage, 5G availability, and download-speed measures; those are not interchangeable. Coverage or time spent connected to 5G alone cannot prove that 5G is slower than LTE nationwide. A fair speed comparison needs the same metric, geography, test period, and conditions.

How to check whether 5G is the problem

  1. Compare in one place. Run several speed tests in the same location, first when the phone shows 5G and then, if its network settings allow, with LTE selected. Keep the test app, server, and other conditions as consistent as possible.
  2. Repeat at different times. If both connections are slow during busy periods and improve later, congestion is a more likely factor than the 5G label alone.
  3. Check which 5G service is active. Note whether the phone reports Nationwide 5G or Ultra Wideband. A result on low-band Nationwide is not a useful stand-in for a C-Band or mmWave test.
  4. Check the phone and coverage. Confirm the handset supports Verizon 5G bands and consider whether indoor walls or distance from a site could be weakening the signal. A 5G-capable phone does not guarantee access to every deployed band.
  5. Consider plan and traffic effects. If results remain unexpectedly low, review Verizon’s plan terms and traffic-management information, including prioritization and video optimization.

Should you turn off 5G on Verizon?

Turning off 5G is best treated as a comparison, not a universal fix. If your phone permits LTE-only selection, test it in the same place and under similar conditions. If LTE is consistently faster or more reliable in the locations that matter to you, using LTE there may make sense. If performance is similar or Ultra Wideband is available and useful, there may be no benefit to disabling 5G. The better choice depends on your device, local signal, network load, and plan.
