It combined three kinds of three-axis sensors in a wristwatch-sized enclosure and sent data to a computer through a separate receiver.
What does MotionPod’s 9-DOF measurement mean?
MotionPod integrated a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis magnetometer. “9 DOF” refers to those nine sensor axes across three sensing modalities; it does not mean the device directly measured nine independent kinds of movement or provided a person’s exact position on its own.
The accelerometer measures acceleration, the gyroscope measures angular motion, and the magnetometer senses magnetic fields. Taken together, these measurements support motion analysis, including the rotation, speed, acceleration and range-of-motion data described for MotionPod. The particular outputs available depended on the Movea software or the integration built around the sensor.
How small and light was it?
Contemporary descriptions called MotionPod about the size of a small wristwatch. Its reported dimensions vary slightly between sources, but both give its mass as 14 g.

The period Movea manual describes a standard wristwatch-sized sensor with a transparent casing and the motion-sensing component on its upper side. It was worn on the body segment being measured, using a strap or bracelet.
What were the sampling, wireless and battery specifications?
The published figures come from different period sources and should be read as source-specific reports rather than a single guaranteed operating specification. The 2015 study gives more detail on sampling and charging; EE Times reported the longer maximum usage figure.
| Specification | Reported figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sampling rate | Adjustable from 25 to 200 Hz | Clinical Interventions in Aging study, 2015 |
| Resolution | 12-bit | Clinical Interventions in Aging study, 2015 |
| Wireless link | Proprietary 2.4 GHz | EE Times, 2011 |

| Charging | 2–3 hours; 500 charging cycles | Clinical Interventions in Aging study, 2015 |
The sources do not establish that range or battery life would be identical in every setup. Actual operating time and wireless reach can depend on use and surroundings.

What else was required to use it?
MotionPod was not a standalone computer-connected sensor. It sent data over its wireless link to a MotionController receiver, which connected to a computer by USB. The system also relied on Movea software, or on the SmartMotion Development Kit when integrating the hardware into an application.

This receiver-and-software arrangement matters when assessing old equipment: possession of the sensor alone does not establish that the complete original workflow will work with a current computer or software environment. Current firmware and software support have not been established.
What was MotionPod designed to measure?
Movea described the device as suited to biomechanics, rehabilitation and joint assessment in physical therapy. Documented application areas also included fitness, gaming, sports, performance analysis and full-body motion capture.

One sensor for a body segment
A single unit could be attached to a moving body segment to collect motion data for tasks such as assessing joint movement or range of motion. The segment being tracked determined where the sensor needed to be mounted.
Multiple sensors for broader movement capture
Multiple MotionPods could be used at different body locations to build a broader picture of movement for performance analysis or full-body motion capture. That setup depended on the MotionController/receiver and the associated Movea software or development tools.

Current manufacture, official support and resale inventory are not established by the available historical product reports and documentation. Those materials describe a product reported in 2011 and studied in 2015; they do not confirm whether MotionPod is currently sold or supported. Treat any second-hand listing as an unverified offer, and check that it includes the receiver, compatible software and necessary accessories before relying on it.

If you need similar sensing rather than the original Movea system, a modern 9-axis IMU module is a possible development starting point, not a guaranteed MotionPod replacement. Compare sensor axes and modalities, size and mass, sampling rate and resolution, wireless protocol and range, battery and charging, receiver and software requirements, mounting, and intended use. The MotionPod’s proprietary 2.4 GHz link and dependence on its receiver and software mean that a generic IMU should not be assumed compatible.
Safety and intended use
The Movea manual says rehabilitation use should take place in a controlled environment and under the supervision of qualified personnel. The product’s historical description as a rehabilitation or joint-assessment tool does not by itself establish suitability for unsupervised clinical use.
