The key is that the hovering magnet does not behave like a stationary one: it synchronizes with the rotor, and gyroscopic stabilization helps hold it in an unusual orientation while magnetic forces establish an equilibrium.
Why does a spinning magnet make another magnet levitate?
Two nearby stationary magnets usually attract or repel; neither arrangement, by itself, explains a stable hover. In the levitation effect studied by researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), a motor spins one permanent magnet rapidly and a second magnet floats nearby. The rotor’s motion changes the dynamics of the system, allowing the floater to remain suspended rather than simply moving toward or away from the rotor.
The phenomenon was demonstrated in 2021 and later reproduced and analyzed by DTU researchers. Their peer-reviewed study appeared in Physical Review Applied on 13 October 2023. The published study describes a rotor turning at roughly 200 Hz—about 200 rotations per second—and a 19 mm-diameter spherical neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnet.
How can magnets hover without a balancing force?
The result is not a static magnetic balance in which attraction exactly counters gravity. Instead, the floater’s motion becomes synchronized with the rotating magnet. That frequency locking, combined with gyroscopic stabilization, holds the floater in a counterintuitive orientation. Magnetostatic interactions then establish the equilibrium position.

In ordinary terms, the spin helps stabilize the floater’s orientation and motion; the magnetic field interactions determine where the stable arrangement occurs. The study finds that a constant vertical field and damping enhanced by eddy currents are sufficient for levitation from rest. Gravity is not the balancing force in the mechanism described by the researchers.
What makes a neodymium magnet float?
The experimental rotor was a 19 mm spherical NdFeB magnet, but magnet material alone does not explain the effect. The important combination is a rotating magnetic field source, a nearby floater, suitable geometry and motion that lets the floater synchronize with the rotor. The American Physical Society’s account of the study says the setup can be reproduced with off-the-shelf components; it does not provide exact consumer-kit specifications.

Magnet size also matters. In the reported size trend, smaller floaters require a higher rotor speed and levitate farther from the rotor. Those are directional findings, not a universal formula for calculating a particular magnet’s speed threshold or hover height.

- It shows: A rapidly rotating permanent magnet can stabilize another permanent magnet in midair through synchronized motion, gyroscopic stabilization and magnetic interactions.
- It does not show: That a stationary magnet pair can produce the same stable hover, or that gravity has been canceled.
- It does not specify: One speed or separation that applies to every magnet size, shape and setup; the reported apparatus and size trend should not be treated as universal consumer-kit specifications.
The distinction matters because “magnetic levitation” can refer to different physical arrangements. In this experiment, the surprising feature is not simply that magnets repel: it is that rotation and synchronization create a stable dynamic state that ordinary static-magnet intuition would not predict.
