Mentor Graphics announced Volcano Vehicle System Architect (VSA) in April 2009 as an AUTOSAR-enabled tool for model-based vehicle-system design. It was intended to help engineers explore vehicle electronics and software architectures before physical prototyping, then carry design work toward implementation. The product line later grew to cover more of the AUTOSAR workflow; Siemens’ 2021 account identifies Capital VSTAR as its continuation after Siemens acquired Mentor Graphics.
What was Mentor Graphics’ AUTOSAR support tool?
Volcano VSA was Mentor Graphics’ architecture-design tool for automotive electronic and software systems. In its 2009 announcement, the company positioned it for an AUTOSAR-based process spanning architectural exploration through implementation. The tool supported designs involving FlexRay, CAN and LIN networks, and was meant to let engineers compare system architectures and move verification earlier—before committing to physical prototypes.
That launch is the answer to “What AUTOSAR tool did Mentor Graphics launch?” It was not a generic interface adapter or a development board: VSA was software for vehicle-system architecture design.
How the Volcano product line expanded
Mentor’s AUTOSAR offering developed beyond the original VSA architecture tool. The names refer to related but distinct parts and generations of a broader tool and software portfolio.

What did VSA’s network and timing capabilities cover?
The 2009 VSA announcement named FlexRay, CAN and LIN. Mentor added a further milestone in 2015: Automotive Ethernet support for AUTOSAR and non-AUTOSAR ECUs. That announcement also described timing analysis across mixed CAN, FlexRay and Ethernet networks and cited ADAS, vehicle backbones, AVB and DoIP among the relevant use cases.
Mentor’s general manager Scot Morrison described the aim as designing hybrid networks using Ethernet, CAN, LIN and FlexRay. The statement describes the design scope Mentor promoted; it does not establish that every network combination or use case was available in every release.

Volcano VSA, Volcano VSTAR and Capital VSTAR: what is the difference?
- Volcano VSA: The original system-architecture tool announced in 2009. The 2015 Ethernet announcement specifically extended VSA’s stated network and timing-analysis scope.
- Volcano VSTAR and VSB: Products that formed part of the Mentor side of the 2011 AUTOSAR 4.x solution with Mecel Picea. VSTAR also appears in Mentor’s later operating-system and basic-software offerings.
- Capital VSTAR: The successor-lineage name Siemens used in 2021. Siemens described an Integrator desktop tool, a basic-software stack and Capital VSTAR Virtualizer for virtual validation.
These names should not be treated as interchangeable labels for one unchanged product. The announcements describe a portfolio that broadened from architecture design into integration, software-stack and validation capabilities.
Is Mentor Volcano still available, and what replaced it?
Mentor Graphics is a historical company name in this product story. Siemens’ July 2021 account says the product line continued as Capital VSTAR following Siemens’ acquisition of Mentor Graphics. That is evidence of a successor lineage, not confirmation of a current 2026 listing, release, license, support arrangement or migration policy.

For a new project or a legacy Volcano installation, ask Siemens or an authorized supplier to confirm current availability, supported AUTOSAR releases, licensing, maintenance and upgrade options. The cited announcements establish a combined AUTOSAR 4.x solution for 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 in 2011, but do not establish which AUTOSAR revisions a current Capital VSTAR release supports. They also do not document an automatic conversion path from a Volcano project to Capital VSTAR.

The record documents product positioning, announced capabilities, one AUTOSAR 4.x solution, a customer standardization announcement and the later Siemens product-family continuation. Those facts explain why “Mentor AUTOSAR tool” may refer to different products depending on the date and task.

They do not provide an independent market-share or adoption percentage, a comparative performance benchmark, or current release and licensing details. Mentor’s 2015 Aisin announcement is a company-reported customer decision, not an industry-wide adoption statistic. The 2017 Mentor Safe reference concerns a qualification program for the VSTAR operating system and basic-software stack; it should not be broadened into an unsupported claim about every product or deployment.
