Star Trek’s digital sets are often hybrids: physical pieces actors can touch are combined with digital scenery displayed on large LED walls. A different technology serves fans: the Roddenberry Archive’s 3D recreations let visitors navigate virtual ships and sets, interact with objects, and learn how production teams brought those spaces to the screen.

How an LED-volume set combines real and digital scenery

An LED volume is not necessarily an entirely digital set. Productions can build a practical foreground—such as consoles, railings, and workstations—then use large LED panels to surround or extend it with virtual scenery. The physical and digital elements are planned to work together on camera and on set.

For Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman described a 270-degree LED-panel AR wall that displayed imaginary landscapes during filming. The wall let actors and crew experience the environment while working, rather than relying only on a blank background or imagining scenery that would be added later. StarTrek.com’s 2021 account describes that production example.

Inside the Strange New Worlds Enterprise engineering set

The Roddenberry Archive describes the Enterprise main engineering set for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as a practical foreground with workstation consoles and guard railing, surrounded by a 70-by-30-foot horseshoe-shaped LED volume. Artists created the virtual environments with Epic’s Unreal Engine. They coordinated with lighting designers, directors, set designers, and directors of photography so that the digital space aligned with the physical build. The Archive’s production account details the set.

AMT Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Four Ship Set 1:2500 Scale Model Kit
  • Brand new plastic model kit of U.S.S. Enterprise Four Ship Set "Star Trek" (Skill 2) 1/2500 scale plastic model kit by AMT.
  • Assembled dimensions approximately L-3.5-7.25 inches long.
  • Includes NX-01 Enterprise, USS Enterprise NCC-1701, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A, and USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B.

The Archive says the team prepared four lighting looks, including “Meltdown” and “Red Alert.” Before a shoot, the virtual background was loaded and adjusted to match the physical foreground; during filming, the team could make smaller changes in consultation with other departments. The visible environment could therefore inform actor performance while the LED imagery and physical scenery contributed to the lighting of the scene.

This is a hybrid approach, not evidence that practical construction or post-production disappears. The described production retained a physical set and coordinated digital work with other production elements; the sources do not establish one universal pipeline for every Star Trek series.

Who plans the digital environment?

Virtual environments require planning across creative and technical teams, often before the stage is used. In a 2025 interview, virtual-production company Pixomondo described its virtual art department working with the traditional art department, writers, and, when available, the director and camera department. Early work may include research, world design, mood boards, key art, and prototypes that help teams judge how a world will fit the volume and how its look and lighting should develop. Pixomondo’s interview also discusses stage operations and traditional visual-effects departments.

That account describes Pixomondo’s workflow, not a fixed job chart for every studio. The interview notes that roles are still developing and vary by company. It also highlights a planning challenge: an environment may need to work as an in-camera background, a set extension, an establishing shot, or a full-CG shot. Teams may therefore plan and build assets for more than one production use.

How the Roddenberry Archive’s interactive exhibits work

The Roddenberry Archive is a fan-facing digital experience, separate from the stages used to film Star Trek. Its 3D recreations let visitors explore ships and sets rather than provide scenery for actors and cameras. An OTOY and Roddenberry Entertainment announcement on August 4, 2025, described access through the Archive website and an Apple Vision Pro app.

The announcement said visitors could explore recreated Enterprise rooms, use in-world transport systems to move between floors, launch shuttles, and interact with objects. It also described documentary features that connect the virtual spaces to the production history of the original sets. In that sense, the experience combines navigation and object interaction with context about how Star Trek environments were designed and brought to screen.

OTOY and Roddenberry Entertainment reported 20 newly added explorable environments, bringing the total to more than 90, and 17 spacecraft available as manipulable 3D models at the time of the August 2025 announcement. These are dated, publisher-reported figures, not verified live totals. The announcement also said the Archive visualizes filmmaking techniques such as forced perspective and LED-volume virtual production. Current pricing, full device compatibility, and geographic access terms are not established by that announcement.

Purpose Support filming by combining physical set elements with digital scenery. Let fans explore reconstructed Star Trek spaces and learn about their production.
Physical and digital elements A practical foreground can sit within or in front of digital scenery on LED panels. A digitally reconstructed environment is navigated as a 3D experience.
Who interacts Actors perform among set pieces while crew work with the visible environment. Visitors move through rooms and interact with virtual objects and systems.

Star Trek’s digital environments build on older design work

Star Trek’s screen graphics evolved before LED volumes were part of production. In a StarTrek.com interview, graphic designers Michael and Denise Okuda discuss the shift from graphics on props and models to animated playback on screens and post-production graphics. Denise Okuda described supervising screen playback, mostly from Deep Space Nine onward.

The interview also describes practical constraints behind the look of fictional spaces. Michael Okuda recalled making signage from available office paper when a production could not fund dedicated signs, and explained that set and stock-material reuse helped productions work within tight budgets and schedules. He said the design team prioritized consistency: “We tried very hard to be internally consistent, which I think is one of the most important keys to believability.” The principle applies across generations of production techniques: technology can change, but coherent visual choices help a fictional world feel real.

For more on the franchise’s graphics and design history, StarTrek.com lists The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual among the Okudas’ behind-the-scenes books. The interview provides that further-reading reference.
