Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo free space on C:, move existing personal files to another drive, choose a different default drive for supported future saves, and use Windows or an app’s own controls for installed apps. These are separate tasks: changing a save destination does not move files already on C:, and not every app can be relocated.
First, check what is using space on C:
Before changing locations, see which files and categories are taking up room. In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage and review the storage breakdown. Windows also lets you inspect large files. This helps you target personal data rather than moving system folders or application directories by hand. See Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows guidance.
Move existing Downloads and Documents files
Moving a file that already exists and changing where future files are saved are different operations. To move existing personal files, open File Explorer, select the files or folders you want to relocate, and move them to a destination on another drive. Microsoft documents this approach for personal files and recommends considering an external drive for files you keep but do not use often.
- Connect the destination drive, if you are using an external one, and confirm it appears in File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer and locate the files or folders in Downloads, Documents, or another personal-data location.
- Select the items you intend to move and use File Explorer’s move operation to place them in a clearly named folder on the destination drive.
- Open several moved files from the destination to confirm they are usable before removing any duplicate copies left behind.
An external drive must be connected to access files stored on it. If you have a suitable secondary internal drive, it is generally a better fit for files you need to access regularly. Microsoft’s guidance on moving personal files is in Free up drive space in Windows.

Moving the contents of Downloads or Documents does not necessarily redirect the folder itself. The Microsoft instructions cited here support moving selected files, but do not establish a universal folder-redirection sequence for every Windows build. Use controls available on your device rather than assuming that moving the folder changes where future downloads or documents go.
Choose a different drive for supported future saves
Windows can set default destinations for certain kinds of new content. This prevents supported future saves from continuing to accumulate on C:, but it does not transfer existing files.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved in Windows 11.
- Choose an available destination drive for each listed content type you want to save elsewhere.
- Apply the change, then check the relevant app’s own save settings if it offers a separate location choice.
On Windows 10, the corresponding setting is named Change where new content is saved. A drive that does not appear may need to be connected. The available content categories and app behavior can vary; these Windows settings do not promise to redirect every program’s downloads or saves. Microsoft explains the storage options in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Windows version note
Microsoft’s file-moving instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so users still on Windows 10 should account for its support status when deciding what to do next. See Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance.

Move installed apps only when Windows or the app supports it
Apps are not ordinary personal files. Do not drag folders out of Program Files or another application directory: an installed app may rely on registrations, services, shared files, or paths that a manual move will not update.
Windows provides a default drive choice for new apps in its storage settings, but that does not establish that every already-installed app can be moved. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label may differ by Windows version), select the app, and use a Move control only if Windows actually offers it. If no supported move option is available, check the app’s own settings or the vendor’s instructions; reinstalling through its supported process may be the appropriate route. Microsoft’s pages for choosing where new content is saved and repairing apps and programs cover storage settings and app management; they do not promise universal migration for installed apps.

Use OneDrive to reduce local storage or change its folder location
OneDrive has two distinct options: keep the OneDrive folder where it is and make selected files online-only to save local space, or relocate the OneDrive root folder to another drive. Choose based on whether you want less local disk use or a different folder location.
Make selected OneDrive files online-only
With Files On-Demand, files can remain available in OneDrive without occupying their full local storage. In File Explorer, right-click a synced file or folder and choose Free up space to make it online-only. Choose Always keep on this device for content you want available locally. An online-only file needs an internet connection to download when you open it. Follow Microsoft’s OneDrive Files On-Demand instructions.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Relocate the OneDrive root folder
Changing the OneDrive folder’s drive involves unlinking OneDrive, moving the folder, and relinking the account at the new location. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for changing the OneDrive folder location rather than moving the folder while the sync client is active.
Be careful when moving a synced file outside the OneDrive folder: Microsoft says this downloads the file to the new location and removes it from OneDrive. Confirm that this matches your sync and backup intentions before doing it. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-location guidance.
Quick Recap
Which approach fits your goal?
| Approach | What it changes | Local availability | Does the drive need to stay connected? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move personal files in File Explorer | Existing selected files | Files reside on the destination | Yes, if the destination is external |
| Windows “Where new content is saved” | Default destination for supported future content | Depends on the destination drive and content type | Yes, if the selected destination is external |
| OneDrive Files On-Demand | Whether selected synced files are stored locally | Online-only files download when needed; “Always keep on this device” retains local copies | Internet access is needed to retrieve online-only files |
| Move the OneDrive root | The location of the OneDrive folder | Synced content follows OneDrive’s settings | Yes, if the new root is on an external drive |
| Move an installed app | Only the app for which Windows or its vendor supplies a supported method | Depends on that app’s supported setup | Depends on the destination and app |
