It lets compatible chargers and devices transfer power through magnetic induction, with rules for power negotiation, safety and interoperability. Qi2 adds magnetic alignment to make placing a phone on a charger easier; the newer Qi2 25W generation raises the supported power ceiling for compatible phones and chargers.
Qi is a standard, not a particular charger brand. Its wider promise is that the same interoperable approach can serve not just phones, but also accessories and charging built into places people use every day.
What Qi wireless charging is and how it works
A Qi charger, also called a transmitter, uses a coil to create an alternating magnetic field. A receiver coil in a compatible phone or other device couples to that field across the small gap between them. The device converts the induced energy into usable direct-current power.
The transmitter and receiver also communicate so they can negotiate power and manage charging. Qi’s specification includes safeguards such as foreign-object detection; certified systems are designed to stop charging when they detect a metal object or excessive heat. The standard’s goal is not simply to move energy without a cable, but to make compatible products work together safely and predictably.

How Qi developed into Qi2 and Qi2 25W
The naming can be confusing: Qi2 is based on Qi version 2.0, while Qi2 25W is the branding for the newer Qi v2.2.1 generation. The WPC’s timeline shows how the standard has changed from a basic 5-watt phone-charging system into a family of profiles with magnetic alignment and higher power options.
| Generation | WPC’s dated milestone | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Qi 1.0 | July 2010 | Delivered 5W. |
| Qi 1.2 | October 2015 | Enabled charging up to 15W. |
| Qi 1.3 | January 2021 | Added authentication. |
| Qi 2.0, branded Qi2 | April 2023 | Introduced the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which uses magnets to align a charger and device. Qi 2.0 also retains an Extended Power Profile (EPP) without magnets. |
| Qi 2.1 | September 2024 | Added automatic alignment and magnetic accessory-cover profiles, including tests for mechanical obstructions. |
| Qi 2.2 | April 2025 | Added support for charging up to 25W. |
| Qi2 25W (Qi v2.2.1 branding) | Launched July 2025 | Identifies the newer 25W generation in the Qi family. |
These are standard capabilities, not a promise that every phone accepts the maximum power. The phone, charger and power adapter all affect the result.
Qi, Qi2 and Qi2 25W: what is different?
| Feature | Qi (including legacy and EPP products) | Qi2 (Qi v2.0) | Qi2 25W |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alignment | Depends on the product design and how the device is placed. | The MPP uses magnets to align the device and charger. Qi 2.0 also includes a nonmagnetic EPP profile. | Builds on the Qi2 generation’s magnetic convenience and alignment benefits. |
| Maximum power documented by WPC | Up to 15W from Qi 1.2 onward. | 15W. | Up to 25W. |
| Compatibility | Requires a compatible Qi-certified device and charger. | Requires support for the relevant Qi2 profile; a magnetic setup also depends on the phone or a suitable cover. | Requires a compatible phone, charger and power supply to reach its higher rate. |
| Certification | WPC certification testing for safety and interoperability. | The same certification model. | The same model, with newer high-power tests. |
| Best fit | Existing Qi devices and a broad range of established accessories. | People who want easier magnetic placement and Qi2-compatible accessories. | Compatible combinations where the higher supported charging rate is useful. |
Qi v2.0 products are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x products. A Qi2 label alone therefore does not establish that a particular older phone and charger will work together as expected.

Does Qi2 work with your phone, and do you need a magnetic case?
Check the exact phone’s wireless-charging specifications and the charger’s certified profile before buying. A phone may support Qi charging without supporting Qi2’s MPP or Qi2 25W. Likewise, a charger’s maximum rating does not make a phone accept that much power: the phone must support the relevant profile and rate.
For Qi2’s magnetic alignment, the phone needs a compatible magnetic interface. Some devices have magnets built in; others may need a compatible magnetic case or accessory cover. A Qi 2.0 EPP product does not use magnets, so “Qi2” by itself does not guarantee that a product attaches magnetically. Check the phone, case and charger documentation together, especially if the case is thick, has a camera protrusion, contains magnets or is not listed as supporting the relevant profile.
Qi 2.1 added magnetic accessory-cover profiles and tests addressing mechanical obstructions. That improves the standard’s ability to account for cases and physical fit, but it does not mean every case works with every phone and charger.

How to identify a certified charger and charge safely
- Check the exact model in the WPC’s certified-product database. The WPC says only certified products may display the Qi or Qi2 logo. Confirm the model number, not just the brand or a generic “wireless charging” description.
- Match the phone and charger profiles. Verify the phone’s supported wireless-charging standard and maximum input, then check the charger’s Qi or Qi2 profile and rated output.
- Check the case and physical fit. Account for case thickness, magnets, camera bumps and whether the case or cover supports the phone’s charging profile.
- Use a suitable USB-C power adapter. The adapter can limit the power available to a pad. Qi 2.2 includes power modes that optimize transfer for the capabilities of the USB-C adapter, so a higher-rated pad alone may not deliver its maximum rate.
- Prefer certified products and follow their instructions. WPC describes foreign-object detection and thermal protections in Qi-certified systems. Keep metal objects off the charging surface and stop using equipment that becomes abnormally hot or damaged.
Certification is a useful interoperability and safety check, not a guarantee of a particular charging speed in every setup. Device limits, adapter capability, alignment and physical obstructions all matter.
How fast is Qi2 25W?
Qi2 25W supports up to 25W when the phone, charger and power supply all support the necessary capabilities. The WPC says this generation provides nearly 70% more power than 15W Qi2 and can charge a smartphone from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. That is the WPC’s stated figure; it is not a guaranteed result for every phone or charging setup.

What would make wireless charging more pervasive?
Wireless charging becomes more useful when it is easy to trust, easy to align and available where devices are used. The WPC says its current Qi overview lists more than 13,000 Qi Certified products, evidence of an established product ecosystem; certification and clear labeling help users identify interoperable products within it.
Make compatibility visible
Consistent Qi and Qi2 logos, certification checks and a searchable product database give buyers a practical way to distinguish tested products from devices that merely claim wireless-charging support. Clearer disclosure of phone, case, charger and adapter requirements would make that check more useful at the point of purchase.
Make placement effortless
Magnetic alignment addresses a familiar frustration: a phone can sit on a pad without its coils being well aligned. An MPP charger, or a compatible magnetic interface added by a case or cover, makes placement more deliberate and can improve coupling. Magnetic convenience must still be matched to the device and its supported profile.

Grow compatible accessories
Qi2 can support a broader range of magnetic accessories as well as charging pads and stands. In its April 2023 Qi2 announcement, the WPC named Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge among companies that had pre-announced Qi2 products, and said more than 100 devices were in testing or the certification queue at that time. Those were announcements and a dated testing figure, not a current count of products available to buy.
Build charging into everyday places
Furniture, desks, travel surfaces, hospitality spaces and automotive installations could make charging part of the environment rather than a separate task. The WPC has identified automotive aftermarket guidance as an application area. For embedded charging to be dependable, designers still need to plan for coil alignment, heat management, foreign-object detection and access for maintenance or replacement.
Extend standards beyond phones
The WPC points to AR/VR-related accessories and its Ki cordless-kitchen standard as areas where wireless power could extend into other parts of daily life. Broader adoption in these categories depends on meeting the same practical needs—safe heat handling, clear power negotiation and interoperability—at the power levels and in the environments those products require.
Qi’s progress from a 5W specification in 2010 to the Qi2 25W generation shows how a shared standard can evolve. Its wider reach will depend not only on increasing power, but on products that fit together, make alignment obvious and bring certified charging into useful places.
