For most beginners who want to print a mix of useful parts, larger models, and hobby projects, an FDM (filament) printer is the better first choice. It has a simpler workflow and suits a wider range of everyday jobs. Choose resin instead if your main goal is very fine detail on small objects—such as miniatures—and you have a properly ventilated workspace for handling, washing, and curing liquid resin.
Neither technology wins for every project. The right choice depends on what you want to make and whether your space and routine can accommodate the printer’s materials and cleanup.
How do FDM and resin 3D printers work?
FDM: melted filament, deposited in layers
FDM, also called fused filament fabrication (FFF), feeds solid thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle and lays it down layer by layer. Common materials include PLA and ABS. The usual beginner workflow is to load filament, prepare the model in slicing software, print, and remove any supports. Some parts may benefit from sanding or other finishing.
Resin: liquid material cured with light
SLA printers cure liquid photopolymer resin with light; many consumer models use a masked exposure process called MSLA. The print is not finished when it comes out of the machine: it needs to be washed and cured, and uncured resin requires careful handling. That extra process is central to the choice, not an optional detail.

Which is easier for a beginner?
FDM is usually the simpler place to start for general-purpose printing. Prusa recommends standard PLA for absolute beginners, describing it as forgiving; HP likewise presents FDM as easier and more forgiving for most beginners. These are manufacturer recommendations, not the result of a universal controlled comparison. Printer models differ, and a beginner focused on miniatures may find resin’s extra work worthwhile.
With FDM, the main routine is preparing and loading filament, printing, and dealing with supports or occasional finishing. Resin adds liquid-material handling, PPE selected for the specific resin, adequate ventilation, washing, curing, and spill-conscious cleanup. If you do not want those extra steps, FDM is the more practical first printer.

FDM vs. resin: what matters for your projects?
| Decision factor | FDM / filament | Resin / SLA or MSLA |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | General hobby printing, practical parts, functional prototypes, props, and larger objects. | Small, intricate objects where surface detail matters, such as miniatures, jewelry prototypes, and dental models. |
| Detail and finish | Layer lines may be visible; sanding or other finishing can help. | Generally finer feature detail and a smoother surface on small prints. |
| Size and material range | Often offers a larger build volume and a broader range of filament materials. | Well suited to small detailed prints; properties vary by resin formulation. |
| Functional performance | Can make durable functional parts when material, orientation, and settings suit the job. | Standard resins can be more brittle than common FDM materials; specialized formulations vary. |
| Workflow | Load filament, slice, print, then remove supports or finish if needed. | Handle liquid resin, use appropriate PPE and ventilation, then wash and cure the print. |
| Cost considerations | Often a lower-cost hobby entry, but total ownership cost depends on materials, maintenance, failed prints, and time. | Account for resin, PPE, ventilation, and post-processing equipment and labor as well as the printer. |
This is a directional comparison: individual printers, materials, settings, and part designs can change the result. Neither technology guarantees a particular part’s strength or finish.
Which printer should you choose?
Choose FDM for varied projects and practical parts
FDM is the stronger default if you expect to print household fixes, functional prototypes, cosplay components, larger models, or a changing mix of projects. Start with standard PLA if your printer supports it, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the machine and material. Prusa’s recommendation to begin with PLA is its manufacturer guidance, not an independent test result.

Choose resin for small, detail-critical prints
Resin makes sense if most of what you plan to print is small and intricate, and a dedicated, adequately ventilated work area is feasible. Make the safety controls, washing, and curing workflow part of your decision before buying—not something to work out after the printer arrives.
If you want both kinds of prints
The technologies can complement each other, but a beginner does not need to buy both at once. Start with the one that matches your most frequent projects; consider the other only if its particular strengths become important.

What workspace and safety setup do you need?
Neither type should be treated as automatically harmless in a home. The University of Illinois Division of Research Safety advises adequate ventilation for 3D printer use. It notes that common FDM feedstocks, including PLA and ABS, can emit ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and recommends considering enclosures, exhaust, or filtration.
For resin, the same university guidance says printers should be installed only in adequately ventilated spaces and users should follow the relevant chemical Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for PPE. Resin spills can be difficult to remove completely from carpeting, so a hard-floor work area is preferable. The guidance was last updated June 17, 2026. Prusa also cautions that resin involves ventilation, safety gear, and messy washing and post-processing, making it a better fit for a professional setting or dedicated workshop than a home office.

- Check the SDS for the exact resin you plan to use; do not assume one glove or respirator specification applies to every product.
- Plan where washing, curing, and spill cleanup will happen before setting up a resin printer.
- For either technology, follow the printer and material manufacturers’ instructions and assess ventilation in the actual room.
How should you compare the full cost?
Do not compare printer prices alone. Consider the machine, materials, maintenance, failed prints, and the time needed to prepare and finish parts. Resin also brings costs for appropriate PPE, ventilation measures, and washing and curing. Formlabs recommends including equipment, material, and labor when calculating cost per part.
There is no universal current price comparison across regions and configurations. HP Canada’s beginner guide discusses entry-level FDM options in a Canadian-market context, while other cited manufacturer pages use their own broad pricing contexts; those figures are not interchangeable or verified live prices. Model availability and specifications change, so check current official specifications and local availability before choosing.
What should a first-time buyer look for?
For an FDM printer, useful considerations include automatic bed leveling, an appropriately sized build volume, a heated bed where needed for your materials, reliable support, and access to replacement parts. HP Canada’s guide lists the Bambu Lab A1 Mini, Creality Ender-3 V3 SE, Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo, and Prusa MINI+ as beginner options in its Canadian-market context; those are examples from that guide, not independently tested recommendations or a guarantee of current availability.
If you choose resin, check that the printer, resin, and wash-and-cure setup are compatible, and budget for the workspace and safety controls required by the material’s SDS. For either type, verify the manufacturer’s current specifications and local availability before purchase.
