Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set up a new 3D printer by following the manual for its exact model, removing the specified shipping restraints, completing its first-run calibration, loading a supported material, and starting with a recommended test print. The steps differ for partly assembled and assembled printers, automatic and manual bed leveling, and FDM and resin machines—so don’t apply another printer’s instructions to yours.
Before you begin: identify your printer’s setup path
Find the printer’s manual or quick-start guide before unpacking or powering on. Check which setup applies to your machine:
- Assembly: Is it fully assembled, or does the guide require you to attach parts?
- Leveling: Does the printer level automatically, assist with leveling, or require manual adjustment?
- Material: Is it an FDM printer that uses filament, or a resin printer with a different material and safety workflow?
- First-run requirements: Does the guide specify a firmware version, calibration sequence, or particular tools?
These differences matter. For example, one Original Prusa XL setup chapter specifies a TX10 Torx key and a 2.5 mm Allen key, and recommends protecting the heatbed with cardboard during that procedure; those are instructions for that model and chapter, not a general 3D-printer tool list. Prusa XL setup guide.
Unpack and prepare the printer
- Place the printer on a stable, clear surface, with enough room to access it and carry out the manual’s setup steps.
- Keep supplied tools and small parts together so they are easy to find during assembly.
- Remove packaging and shipping restraints exactly as the model’s guide describes. Do not assume every foam piece or tie is disposable; some restraints secure moving parts for shipping.
- Read the manual’s pre-power instructions. Prusa, for example, tells owners of an assembled i3 printer to read the handbook before switching it on and describes foam supports that secure the extruder and bed for shipping. Prusa assembled i3 guide.
Assemble only the parts your manual specifies
If the printer arrives partly assembled, follow its illustrated assembly steps in order. Use only the listed tools and make adjustments or apply lubrication only when the manufacturer instructs you to. Printers that arrive assembled may still need shipping supports removed and first-run checks completed, but they do not necessarily require the same assembly work as another model.

Setup time varies with the amount of assembly and calibration required. Creality gives a broad estimate of 20 minutes to an hour; this is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every printer. Creality setup guide.
Power on and complete the first-run calibration
Once the manual’s pre-power checks are complete, switch on the printer and follow its on-screen first-run wizard in order. Calibration instructions are model-specific: Creality describes automatic leveling on some printers and manual adjustment on others. Prusa’s assembled i3 guidance includes first-start Z calibration, while its XL first-run guide specifies firmware 6.2.4 or newer for that particular machine. Check your own printer’s current manual for its required firmware and calibration steps rather than applying those examples to a different model. Complete the required leveling or calibration before printing. Bed leveling affects the gap between the nozzle and build surface: if the first layer is too high, it may not adhere; if the nozzle is too close, it can contribute to a clog. Avoid changing offsets or making mechanical adjustments unless the manual or a clearly observed problem calls for it.
Load the printer’s supported material
For an FDM printer
Check the manual for compatible filament types, filament diameter, and recommended nozzle and bed temperatures. Load the filament using the printer’s own procedure, without forcing it. Quick-start instructions can also cover other model-specific tasks; BCN3D’s material, for example, includes build plate installation, filament loading, and calibration steps. BCN3D quick-start guide.

For a resin printer
Resin printers do not use the FDM filament-loading workflow. Follow the resin printer’s setup manual and safety documentation for its material, handling, and first print. Do not use filament instructions as a substitute for resin-specific guidance. Creality setup guide.
Start with a recommended test print
Use a sample file included with the printer or another test print recommended by its manufacturer. Watch the initial layer to see whether it is adhering and laying down consistently. If it does not, pause and check the model’s leveling, loading, and troubleshooting instructions before changing temperatures, offsets, or mechanical settings. A single symptom can have more than one cause, so make adjustments based on the printer’s guidance and what you observe.

Troubleshoot common first-start problems
The filament will not load
Start with the printer’s loading instructions and check the filament path rather than forcing material into the extruder. Creality’s setup FAQ lists a bent or misaligned filament tip, debris in the extruder, and a clogged nozzle among possible things to check. Creality setup guide.
The first layer will not stick
Check that the required bed-leveling or calibration step was completed and follow the manual’s first-layer guidance. A nozzle that is too far from the bed can prevent good adhesion; one that is too close can contribute to a clog. Avoid broad, simultaneous setting changes that make it harder to identify the issue.

You are unsure whether calibration must be repeated
There is no universal calibration schedule established for every printer. Creality advises checking bed leveling before printing, but the need and procedure depend on the model and conditions. Use your manual’s maintenance and calibration guidance rather than assuming another printer’s schedule applies. Creality setup guide.
