At the matching monthly price points, ChatGPT Pro 100 and Claude Max 5x cost $100, while ChatGPT Pro 200 and Claude Max 20x cost $200. But their usage allowances are measured differently, so the best fit depends on which models and features you rely on—and how your account handles your actual workload.
ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max prices compared
The vendors’ listed 2026 monthly prices create two direct price comparisons, plus a higher ChatGPT Pro tier. Anthropic prices exclude applicable tax and may change.
| Plan | Listed monthly price | Usage framing |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Pro 100 | $100 (OpenAI, 2026) | Plan-specific allowances; OpenAI does not describe them as a fixed message count. |
| Claude Max 5x | $100 (Anthropic, 2026) | Anthropic describes 5x Pro usage per five-hour session. |
| ChatGPT Pro 200 | $200 (OpenAI, 2026) | More usage than Pro 100; allowances vary by model and product. |
| Claude Max 20x | $200 (Anthropic, 2026) | Anthropic describes 20x Pro usage per five-hour session. |
| ChatGPT Pro 500 | $500 (OpenAI, 2026) | Highest included usage among OpenAI’s three listed Pro tiers; the only one with Ultrafast. |
These prices and multipliers are vendor descriptions, not independent performance or quota measurements. In particular, Claude’s 5x and 20x figures cannot be converted into a guaranteed number of prompts or treated as equivalent to OpenAI’s model-specific allowances. For current details, see OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro tiers article and Anthropic’s Claude pricing page.
How the usage limits differ
Claude Max: a shared pool with session and weekly limits
Anthropic says Max provides 5x or 20x more usage than Pro per rolling five-hour session. Paid Claude plans also have weekly limits. Claude web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code draw from the same pool, so intensive work in one can leave less usage available in another. There is no fixed message count: consumption depends on conversation length and complexity, the selected model, and features used.

ChatGPT Pro: allowances vary by model and product
OpenAI’s Pro tiers include access to Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory, and file uploads, but limits differ by tier and can temporarily make a model unavailable until its allowance resets. Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex have distinct allowance arrangements. OpenAI also says a Pro subscription does not mean unlimited GPT-6 Pro use; Pro 100 and Pro 200 differ in how GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro allowances interact. Check the current OpenAI model-limit guidance for specifics.
The practical distinction is that Anthropic explicitly describes a shared Claude usage pool across its apps and coding tool, while OpenAI describes separate arrangements for Chat, Work, and Codex. Neither approach guarantees that a particular heavy-use pattern will fit without interruption.

Which subscription suits your workflow?
Choose based on the models and features you need
Start with the models you actually use, not the headline multiplier. Confirm the models available to your account and the limits attached to them. Then compare the features central to your work: coding, deep research, file handling, image creation, or other tasks. The plan that costs the same may still be a poor substitute if your preferred model or workflow is constrained differently.
Account for long, complex sessions
If you often maintain long conversations, use complex prompts, or repeatedly invoke resource-intensive features, your usage may be less predictable than a simple prompt count suggests. Anthropic explicitly says task length, complexity, model choice, and features affect consumption. OpenAI likewise sets model- and plan-specific allowances. Watch how quickly your own account reaches a limit during representative work rather than assuming the advertised tier will cover it.

Consider cross-device and coding use
Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans and shares the same usage limits as Claude’s other apps. OpenAI includes Codex with Pro, but Codex has a distinct allowance arrangement from Chat and ChatGPT Work. If you code heavily, compare the allowance behavior of the coding tool itself and account for whether coding usage competes with your other work.
What happens when you reach a limit?
On ChatGPT Pro, an allowance can make a model temporarily unavailable until it resets. OpenAI says credits can extend use for eligible features after included allowances are consumed, but they do not apply to every model or feature. Its Pro article names Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as examples of eligible features, subject to plan and account availability.

Anthropic’s Max limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans also have weekly limits. For heavy coding workloads, Anthropic says users can instead use pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account; that is a separate usage route, not an expansion of the shared Max pool. - Match the price tier. Compare Pro 100 with Max 5x at $100 per month, or Pro 200 with Max 20x at $200 per month.
- List your essential models and features. Verify that the plan offers the model and workflow you depend on, and note the stated limits.
- Track a representative week. Use your normal mix of chat, coding, research, and other features; record when limits interrupt work and which tool caused the constraint.
- Check how usage is pooled. Claude usage across web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code shares one pool. OpenAI describes distinct allowance arrangements for Chat, Work, and Codex.
- Weigh the fallback. Consider whether a temporary model limit, eligible OpenAI credits, or Anthropic’s separate API-credit route is workable for you.
The official vendor pages establish plan features and limit structures, but they do not establish which service produces better results across arbitrary tasks. Your preferred models and observed account usage are more useful decision criteria than a claimed universal quality winner.
