Opera announced its Chromebook-optimized browser on July 1, 2021, bringing a free, unlimited, no-log VPN and built-in ad blocking to ChromeOS. The Android-based browser also added cookie-dialog blocking, integrated messengers, themes, a crypto wallet and Flow synchronization. These are browser features—not system-wide ChromeOS protections—and the announcement describes a 2021 release, not verified current availability.
What Opera announced for Chromebooks
Opera introduced Opera for ChromeOS on July 1, 2021 as an alternative browser designed for Chromebook laptops. Opera said the release combined features from its Android browser with custom optimizations for laptop-style use, including a mouse, keyboard and shortcuts. Opera’s announcement described the product and its feature set.
The launch responded to the growth of Chromebook use, but the figures cited by Opera were contemporary market context rather than current sales data. Opera reported 30 million Chromebooks sold in 2020, forecast 40 million shipments for 2021, and said 12 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2021, up 276%. Opera’s investor page is the company source for the cited market figures.
Which privacy features were built in?
Free browser VPN
Opera described its VPN as free, unlimited and no-log. It was integrated into the browser; that does not make it a VPN for every app or connection on the Chromebook. A browser VPN should therefore not be treated as a system-wide replacement for a separately configured device VPN.

Ad blocking and cookie-dialog blocking
The browser included built-in ad blocking and a feature to block cookie-consent dialogs. These tools apply within Opera, rather than automatically changing how Chrome or other apps behave. The announcement does not establish current filter-list support, the range of ads or trackers blocked, or how the controls work in current releases.
How Opera compared with Chrome
The practical distinction in Opera’s 2021 announcement was its bundled browser conveniences. It did not establish that Chrome lacked every comparable capability through extensions or other services; the table describes the features Opera said it included, not a present-day feature audit of either browser.

| Feature | Opera for ChromeOS as announced in 2021 | What that means for a ChromeOS user |
|---|---|---|
| VPN | Free, unlimited, no-log browser VPN | Opera browser traffic, not a system-wide VPN for other apps |
| Ad blocking | Built in | Available within Opera; current filter coverage was not stated in the announcement |
| Cookie-dialog handling | Cookie-dialog blocking included | A browser convenience, not a ChromeOS-level setting |
| Messengers | Built-in messengers included | Messaging shortcuts were part of Opera’s browser feature bundle |
| Cross-device synchronization | Flow synchronization included | Opera described Flow as part of the offering; the announcement did not specify current availability or supported device combinations |
| Keyboard and mouse | Custom Chromebook optimizations for laptop-style mouse, keyboard and shortcut use | Designed to feel more at home on a Chromebook than a touch-first Android app |
| System-wide privacy tools | Not described | The announced VPN and blocking features were browser features, not evidence of system-wide protection |
What other features did Opera include?
- Integrated messengers: Opera listed built-in messaging services as part of the browser.
- Color themes: Users could customize the browser’s appearance.
- Crypto wallet: A wallet was included in the feature lineup.
- Flow: Opera included its cross-device synchronization feature.
The announcement does not establish that all these functions remain available in the same form today. Check Opera’s current ChromeOS listing and release notes before relying on a particular feature.

The July 2021 launch announcement says Opera for ChromeOS included a free, unlimited, no-log browser VPN. Because that announcement is historical, it does not confirm present-day ChromeOS compatibility, release status or current VPN behavior. It also describes browser-level protection, not a VPN that covers the whole Chromebook.
