No current official McAfee page identifies a McAfee-branded ethical hacking certification. The likely source of confusion is McAfee Institute, a separate professional education provider. Its closest documented programs focus on cyber investigations and open-source intelligence—not ethical hacking.

Is McAfee Institute the same as McAfee antivirus?

No. McAfee is the consumer cybersecurity company, while McAfee Institute is a professional education provider. McAfee’s corporate compliance page discusses organizational standards such as ISO 27001; McAfee Institute’s catalog focuses on intelligence, investigations and cyber investigations. McAfee corporate compliance information and McAfee Institute’s intelligence certification catalog describe different organizations and offerings.

What McAfee Institute certifications are closest to ethical hacking?

The closest documented options may be relevant to people interested in cybersecurity investigations, but neither is presented as an ethical-hacking credential. Ethical hacking generally centers on authorized security testing; the programs below describe investigations or intelligence work instead.

Program Primary focus Study time and CPE Exam and credential Listed tuition
Certified Expert in Cyber Investigations (CECI) Cyber investigations, OSINT, fraud, counterintelligence, electronic discovery, computer and mobile forensics, surveillance and case development. 100 hours and 100 CPE credits, as stated on McAfee Institute’s current program page, accessed 2026. Includes lifetime access, a one-year exam license, an official manual, online training and prep quizzes. The page describes a board credential on completion. $2,497, or $624 per month for four months, as listed on the current page accessed 2026.
Certified in Open Source Intelligence (C|OSINT) Collecting, verifying, analyzing and reporting open-source intelligence. 55 hours and 50 CPE credits, as stated on McAfee Institute’s current program page, accessed 2026. Includes lifetime access, a one-year exam license, a proctored final examination, an official study manual and online training. The page describes a board-issued credential. $2,497, or $624 per month for four months, as listed on the current page accessed 2026.

These are McAfee Institute’s listed tuition figures, not prices for a McAfee ethical-hacking certification. Confirm current details on the CECI program page and C|OSINT program page before enrolling.

How should you interpret accreditation and recognition?

McAfee Institute says it is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). Its materials also list NICCS, DoD COOL and other recognition or catalog information. Those claims may matter when assessing a program, but accreditation or a catalog listing does not establish universal employer acceptance.

The provider explicitly says that completing training does not guarantee employment, promotion, security-clearance eligibility or acceptance by an agency or third party. The CECI page states: “Completion of training does not guarantee employment, promotion, security clearance eligibility, or acceptance by any agency or third party.” See the provider’s CECI terms and program details and certification catalog.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose CECI if your goal is structured learning in cyber investigations and related forensic or case-development work.
  • Choose C|OSINT if you want training specifically in collecting and analyzing open-source intelligence.
  • Look elsewhere for ethical-hacking training if you need a credential explicitly centered on authorized penetration testing or security testing. Neither program’s official page describes that as its credential focus.

McAfee Institute’s catalog lists 15 certification programs in the NICCS catalog, according to its current intelligence-certifications page accessed in 2026; that listing does not change the focus of the two programs above or establish acceptance by every employer.
