The all-cash deal was valued at approximately $665 million. Announced on July 10, 2024, it was completed on August 12, 2024.
What AMD acquired
Silo AI is a Finnish AI lab headquartered in Helsinki, with operations in Europe and North America. AMD described it as Europe’s largest private AI lab. Its work spans end-to-end AI solutions for cloud, embedded and endpoint computing, bringing AMD people who build models as well as experience integrating AI for enterprise customers.
AMD named Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce and Unilever among organizations connected to Silo AI’s work. Nokia and Combient were also associated with the lab’s work. In AMD’s announcement, Combient CEO Mats Agervi characterized Silo AI as having 300 AI scientists and engineers; that is a partner-reported figure, not an independently audited headcount.
Models, engineering and deployment
Silo AI developed multilingual open-source large language models (LLMs), including Poro and Viking, on AMD platforms. AMD said the team trained language models at scale on AMD Instinct accelerators and had experience integrating models for end customers.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K says Silo AI developed a software stack used to train multiple state-of-the-art LLMs on AMD Instinct accelerators. That capability complements AMD’s broader software stack, including ROCm, which supports AI training and inference on AMD hardware.
Why AMD paid approximately $665 million
The acquisition adds expertise in AI models and enterprise implementation to AMD’s compute hardware and software. The aim, as AMD stated it, is to speed up the development and deployment of AI models on AMD hardware and strengthen the company’s end-to-end AI offerings for enterprise customers. In practical terms, AMD gains a team that can help customers move from accelerator hardware to trained models and deployed solutions.

- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
The deal also fits AMD’s stated preference for open standards and collaboration with the wider AI ecosystem. It is a talent, software and delivery acquisition—not a purchase of a chipmaker or a standalone cloud platform. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K says the acquisition expanded its ability to accelerate development and deployment of AI models on AMD hardware.
How the deal fits AMD’s wider AI investments
AMD’s acquisition announcement said the company had invested more than $125 million across a dozen AI companies in the preceding 12 months. It also cited its acquisitions of Mipsology and Nod.ai. Those figures and examples show the Silo AI purchase was part of a broader effort to build AI software and expertise around AMD products; they do not establish the returns from any individual investment.

AMD disclosed the purchase price, but the cited company materials do not provide a quantified revenue forecast, cost-synergy estimate or post-acquisition return target. The strategic case is clear from AMD’s stated goals, but those statements alone do not quantify the deal’s financial payoff.
Deal timeline and leadership
- July 10, 2024: AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire Silo AI in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million. The company expected the deal to close in the second half of 2024. AMD said Silo AI CEO and co-founder Peter Sarlin would continue to lead the team within AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group.
- August 12, 2024: AMD announced that the acquisition was complete. Silo AI’s team joined the Artificial Intelligence Group, led by AMD senior vice president Vamsi Boppana.
What happens to Silo AI’s Poro and Viking models?
Poro and Viking are among Silo AI’s multilingual open-source LLMs, and AMD said they were developed on AMD platforms. The acquisition gives AMD access to the team and model-development expertise behind them. The cited announcements and filing do not specify a post-acquisition product roadmap or say whether either model will continue under the same name, release schedule or governance. The available facts establish their role in Silo AI’s work, not a particular future release plan.

How to assess the acquisition
The $665 million price is the principal disclosed financial figure. To judge whether the deal delivers on its rationale, useful evidence would include concrete follow-through in these areas:
- Hardware and software integration: whether more models are trained and deployed on AMD Instinct accelerators and through ROCm.
- Customer delivery: whether AMD expands enterprise AI solutions across cloud, embedded and endpoint uses.
- Openness: how AMD and Silo AI continue supporting open standards and open-source model work.
- Execution: product and customer disclosures that show the acquired expertise is translating into deployments.
AMD’s completion announcement confirms the transaction closed, and its filing documents Silo AI’s model-training software capability. Those facts support the strategic rationale, but they do not by themselves establish commercial results or a return on the acquisition price.
