You can build a strong gaming PC for under $1,500, but the best parts list depends on whether you want a higher-end 1440p-focused system or a lower-cost 1080p build. GamersNexus published a $1,491 Ryzen 5 9600X and RTX 5070 build in February 2026. Tom’s Hardware’s June 24, 2026 Prime Day list instead pairs an Intel Core i5-12600KF with an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, with an RX 9060 XT 16GB as a graphics upgrade option. Those are dated examples, not guaranteed current deals: check the live delivered price and compatibility before buying.

Which under-$1,500 build should you choose?

Choose the AMD configuration if you want the stronger graphics tier in the cited complete build, 32GB of memory and a 2TB SSD. Choose the Intel configuration if you want to keep the build more budget-oriented, are comfortable with 1080p-focused graphics, and can use DDR4. The sources do not provide a standardized AMD-versus-Intel benchmark table, so there is no evidence here for an exact FPS comparison.

GamersNexus gives its AMD parts list a total of $1,491. Tom’s Hardware’s listed Intel configuration does not have a total established here, so treat it as a parts direction rather than a verified under-$1,500 checkout total.

What the AMD build includes

The February 2026 GamersNexus build combines a Ryzen 5 9600X with an RTX 5070 12GB, then allocates for 32GB of DDR5 and a 2TB SSD. Its motherboard is the Gigabyte B650M Gaming Plus WiFi, with a Lian Li Vector V100 Mini case and MSI Coreliquid A13 240 cooler. The cited total is $1,491.

This selection favors the graphics card, memory, and storage capacity while using a midrange six-core CPU. GamersNexus identifies AM5 as having a clearer CPU-upgrade path in this guide. A compatible B650, B850, or X870 board is a platform option for the Ryzen 5 9600X; the named build specifically uses B650M. Confirm the BIOS support for your exact CPU and board before assembly.

When the AMD route makes sense

  • You want the RTX 5070 12GB configuration represented by the cited complete build.
  • You prefer 32GB RAM and 2TB of storage from the outset.
  • You value the AM5 upgrade path described by GamersNexus.

What the Intel build includes

Tom’s Hardware’s June 24, 2026 Prime Day-oriented list centers on the Core i5-12600KF, a B760M DDR4 motherboard, 32GB DDR4, a 1TB NVMe SSD, RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, Cooler Master Q300L case, and a 750W power supply. The outlet presents it as a budget-oriented, 1080p-focused option.

  • Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation

The same article lists an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB at $309.99 and an RX 9060 XT 16GB alternative at $419.99, a $110 difference in those dated listed prices. Tom’s describes the latter as an approximately $100 graphics upgrade. The additional VRAM may be valuable depending on the games and settings you use, but the cited material does not establish a universal performance advantage or an FPS uplift.

There is an important processor-price distinction: Tom’s parts list names the Core i5-12600KF, while the $179.97 listing cited in the article is for the Core i5-12600K. Those are different SKUs; do not assume that price applies to the KF model. The listed Intel component prices and Prime Day references are snapshots, not current quotes.

When the Intel route makes sense

  • You are aiming for a lower-cost 1080p system rather than matching the AMD build’s GPU tier.
  • You want to use a DDR4 motherboard and memory kit.
  • You would rather spend more on the RX 9060 XT 16GB option if its price and your workload justify the upgrade.

How to compare Prime Day parts and prebuilts

Discount labels alone do not show whether a system is the better value. PC Gamer’s 2026 roundup illustrates the memory tradeoff in two prebuilts: a $1,299 Ryzen 7 9700F/RTX 5060 Ti system and a $1,399 Ryzen 7 8700F/RTX 5070 system both include 16GB of DDR5. That is less memory than the 32GB in either cited DIY build, even though the more expensive prebuilt has the higher-tier GPU.

Option in PC Gamer’s 2026 roundup Price stated CPU and GPU Memory stated
Prebuilt option 1 $1,299 Ryzen 7 9700F / RTX 5060 Ti 16GB DDR5
Prebuilt option 2 $1,399 Ryzen 7 8700F / RTX 5070 16GB DDR5

Before choosing a DIY build or prebuilt, compare the delivered total and the parts that affect your use:

Check compatibility before checkout

The AMD and Intel motherboards are not interchangeable. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison identifies the MSI PRO X870-P WiFi as an AM5 board for Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 processors, and the MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi as an LGA1700 board for Intel 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen processors. Its cited Prime Day prices were $151.99 and $132.99, respectively; these are dated deal prices, not evidence of current availability. As TechRadar notes, the boards target different platforms rather than being an apples-to-apples comparison.

  1. Match CPU socket to motherboard. The Ryzen 5 9600X needs an AM5 board. The Core i5-12600KF needs an LGA1700 board. Do not pair Ryzen with B760 or the Intel CPU with X870.
  2. Match memory type. The Intel list calls for DDR4, so select a B760 board explicitly made for DDR4. The AMD build calls for DDR5; DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
  3. Confirm cooler support. Check the cooler’s mounting hardware for the CPU socket and verify that the radiator or air cooler fits the case without obstructing other components.
  4. Check case dimensions and clearance. Confirm motherboard form factor, graphics-card length and thickness, and cooler or radiator clearance against the exact case specifications.
  5. Verify the power supply. Check the PSU’s wattage, quality, and required CPU and GPU power connectors against the chosen components; the Intel list specifies 750W, but the AMD list details here do not specify a PSU model or wattage.
  6. Recalculate the real total. Add the exact component prices, shipping, and tax, and inspect stock, seller, returns, and warranty before placing the order.

Are the Prime Day prices still worth using?

Use the listed amounts as dated reference points, not as live offers. Tom’s Hardware’s component prices and list are dated June 24, 2026; TechRadar and PC Gamer also report 2026 deal snapshots. Stock, seller, shipping, tax, return terms, and warranty can change the value of a deal or push a build over its budget. Recheck each retailer listing at checkout and compare the complete system cost rather than relying on a headline discount.
