To diagnose buffering or low resolution, compare tests taken close together on the same Wi-Fi, then check the Chromecast’s own connection and troubleshoot it.
Does a phone speed test measure Chromecast speed?
No. The test runs on the phone or computer, so its result reflects that device’s connection under its own conditions. It does not directly measure Chromecast throughput. The devices can differ in Wi-Fi hardware, signal strength, location, band, and the amount of network activity competing for bandwidth.
Casting a browser-based speed test from a phone does not change this: unless the test is actually running on the Chromecast, it measures the sender or browser connection, not the receiver’s.
How to compare a phone or computer with a Chromecast
This is a practical comparison method, not a procedure Google prescribes. It helps make results more useful, but does not eliminate differences between device radios.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Run the tests within a short interval so changing network conditions are less likely to affect the comparison.
- Use the same test service and server for each test if possible. Record download speed, upload speed, latency, and the time of each test; results from unrelated servers are not controlled comparisons.
- Place the phone or computer near the Chromecast and connect it to the same Wi-Fi network and, where you can choose, the same band.
- Check the Chromecast’s connection: use Google Home for older Chromecast models, or open Settings > Network & Internet on Chromecast with Google TV.
- If results differ, repeat the comparison and investigate the Chromecast’s position, Wi-Fi band, interference, router placement, connected-device load, and coverage.
Google’s setup requirements say the Google Home app supports Android 9.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later, and that setup of Google streaming devices on a computer is unsupported. That setup limitation does not prevent a computer from running a speed test for its own connection.
What speed does Chromecast need for 4K?
Google says 4K viewing requires both a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. That threshold is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 4K playback. Google notes that content length, an internet service provider’s network availability over time, and other factors can affect actual speed and the resolution a streaming device can show. See Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer requirements.

What to do if Chromecast buffers or shows low resolution
Work through the connection checks below. A faster phone result does not prove the internet plan is delivering that speed to the Chromecast, and no single Wi-Fi change is guaranteed to fix buffering.
- Confirm the network: Check that the phone and Chromecast are on the intended same Wi-Fi network.
- Check the Wi-Fi band: If your router supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Google advises ensuring the Chromecast is on 5 GHz when available.
- Restart and update: Update router firmware if needed, then restart the Chromecast and router or modem.
- Reduce interference: Move the Chromecast away from the TV and cables to reduce Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference.
- Check coverage and network load: Consider how many devices are using Wi-Fi and whether the Chromecast is in a weak-coverage area. Google identifies mesh Wi-Fi as one possible coverage measure.
- Consider wired networking: Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV support Ethernet, but do not have an Ethernet port; an adapter is sold separately. Check compatibility and availability for your model before buying one.
These steps follow Google’s Chromecast connection troubleshooting guidance. The cause can also lie with the streaming app, content, receiver, or ISP availability—not just Wi-Fi throughput.

Is a Cast discovery problem the same as a speed problem?
No. If an app cannot find the Chromecast, that is a discovery issue, not a measurement of internet speed. Google’s Cast documentation says discovery failures can involve the sender app, Cast receiver, or network. Trying an appropriate Cast sender app on the same Wi-Fi can help narrow down discovery behavior, but it does not diagnose throughput. See Google Cast discovery troubleshooting.
