Start with an inventory of browser extensions and changes to browser configuration, then investigate suspicious browser-process access, web destinations, and authenticated-session use. No single endpoint agent or URL alert reveals every action that happens inside a browser.
Why browser attacks can leave gaps in endpoint telemetry
A browser is both a user application and a place where extensions can operate with permissions over information users view or enter. An extension may look like an ordinary add-on while persisting in the browser, and a Chromium-based browser’s configuration can be tampered with to load an extension without an obvious user installation. MITRE ATT&CK’s Browser Extensions technique, T1176.001, describes these risks across Linux, Windows, and macOS; its page was last modified September 22, 2025.
That does not mean endpoint tools are useless. It means that process and file events alone may not explain what an authorized or malicious extension did inside the browser, or which browser action initiated a network request. Build detections around combinations of browser state, process behavior, network activity, and identity events rather than expecting one log source to tell the whole story.
Build a browser baseline before hunting for anomalies
Inventory extensions and their permissions
For each managed device and browser, collect extension identifiers, names, versions, installation source when available, permissions, update behavior, and approval status. Compare observed extensions against an allowlist or an approved policy baseline. Alert on an unapproved addition, an unexpected version or configuration change, and an extension that reappears after removal.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint documents an API that returns known installed browser extensions with per-device details. Its applicability depends on the relevant Defender capability and current licensing; it is one example, not a prerequisite for this workflow. If your platform does not provide an equivalent inventory, use browser-management or endpoint tooling that can report extension state. MITRE recommends auditing extensions and applying allow or deny controls where appropriate.
Include browser configuration in the baseline
Track changes to browser preferences and secure preferences, as well as the files or settings that determine which extensions load. A new extension is not the only useful signal: an unauthorized configuration change can load an extension or alter browser behavior without a normal store installation event. Treat manual or script-driven installation and unexpected configuration edits as events to investigate, not automatic proof of compromise.

Correlate extension changes with behavior
An extension change is more actionable when it is followed by activity that does not fit the device’s normal use. Build detections that join browser inventory or configuration events with available endpoint and network telemetry.
- A newly installed or changed extension followed by unexpected browser-related file writes.
- Modification of browser preferences or secure preferences near an extension installation or update.
- Unusual browser child-process activity, especially when it follows a suspicious extension or configuration event.
- Outbound connections to untrusted or unexpected domains that occur after the same change.
- Extension installation through a manual or script-based path rather than an approved source or deployment process.
MITRE ATT&CK’s Browser Extensions guidance and cross-platform analytic patterns describe combinations such as suspicious installation, configuration tampering, and network activity. Adapt those patterns to the events your environment actually collects, then validate them against legitimate browser updates and administrative actions. They are behavioral starting points, not guaranteed turnkey detections. Do not clear an extension solely because a user recognizes its name or it appears in a marketplace: malicious add-ons can masquerade as legitimate ones, and store scanning is not a complete safeguard.

Hunt for browser session hijacking
Session hijacking can let an attacker inherit cookies, HTTP sessions, or client certificates and use services as an authenticated user. MITRE ATT&CK’s Browser Session Hijacking technique (T1185) describes this behavior. Look for suspicious high-integrity or special-privilege access to browser processes, unusual access to browser process handles, remote-thread or other injection activity, and browser activity that becomes a pivot into authenticated services.
Carry a suspicious browser finding into identity investigation. Check the identity provider’s available records for unusual session use and account activity around the same time, and connect those findings to the affected user and device. The relevant fields differ by identity provider; there is no universal identity-event schema established by the cited guidance. A suspicious process-access event should prompt investigation, not be treated by itself as proof that a session was stolen.

Use web-protection alerts as context, not a complete explanation
Review web-threat detections alongside browser-specific evidence. Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint web protection documentation describes alerts generated by Network Protection in block or audit mode, with investigation context such as the URL or domain, device, application, related alerts, and whether a request was blocked or detected. The cited documentation covers Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 and Plan 2; confirm current SKU behavior for your tenant.
A destination alert can show that a connection was attempted or detected, but it does not by itself establish whether an extension, injected browser code, or a user’s navigation initiated it. Use the device and time context to correlate the alert with extension changes, browser process activity, and identity events. Also distinguish a blocked request from one that was merely detected: those outcomes describe different exposure, even when the destination is the same.

Reduce exposure while improving detection
Control extension installation and maintenance
- Restrict installation to approved sources and enforce allow or deny policies appropriate to your environment.
- Remove extensions that are not needed, and investigate unexpected reappearance rather than repeatedly deleting the same item without finding its persistence path.
- Keep browsers updated and limit software installation to approved processes.
These measures align with MITRE ATT&CK mitigations for extension abuse, including auditing, execution prevention, limiting software installation, and software updates. They reduce opportunities for abuse but do not eliminate the need to monitor browser state and activity.
Assess browser isolation for high-risk browsing
Browser isolation places a logical barrier between web content and the local operating system. CISA’s 2023 Capacity Enhancement Guide: Securing Web Browsers and Defending Against Malvertising, written for federal agencies, describes remote isolation as moving browser processing into a separate virtualized or cloud-hosted environment. Consider it as a risk-reduction control for high-risk browsing, not as a replacement for extension, browser, endpoint, or identity monitoring. CISA also cautions that browser extensions such as ad blockers can hold broad privileges over traffic and data.
Make the detection workflow fit your environment
Before operationalizing an alert, confirm what your browsers, operating systems, management tools, and security subscriptions can actually report. Microsoft’s extension inventory and web-protection capabilities are examples whose coverage depends on product configuration and licensing. Other environments may require browser-management data or different endpoint and network sources.
When evaluating a control or telemetry source, compare its visibility into extension inventory and runtime behavior, whether it detects, blocks, or isolates, its browser and operating-system coverage, and how well its events can be correlated with endpoint, network, and identity data. Also account for licensing, coverage gaps, user friction, and operational overhead. The cited guidance establishes these control categories but does not provide a current apples-to-apples product benchmark.
Keep detections evidence-based: preserve the events and timeline that prompted an alert, distinguish observed facts from hypotheses, and investigate related sources before deciding whether to contain a device, disable an extension, or respond to a potentially compromised session. This avoids treating a single URL, extension name, or process event as a complete account of an attack.
